SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State students will be able to learn all about Latinx representation in media through the life of the "Queen of Tejano."On what would have been the famed superstar's 48th birthday, SDSU's School of Journalism and Media Studies will offer a course dedicated to the late Selena Quintanilla Perez next spring called, "Selena and Latinx Media Representation."Students will be able to register for the class starting on Nov. 1, 2019.RELATED: Free textbook program saves Grossmont College students thousandsThe course will explore and deconstruct Latinx identities and socio-cultural representations through Selena's music, career, and influence, according to Nathian Rodriquez, assistant professor of digital media studies.“Students also need access to content in media landscapes to better understand the relationship between mediated representations and Latinx identity formation and maintenance,” Rodriguez said. “Speaking about these issues through the life of a well-known and visible celebrity allows students to utilize both pop culture and Latinx culture to deconstruct and interrogate the significance and broader meaning of minority-based mediated content.”Selena released 10 albums throughout her career, winning several awards including Tejano Music Awards, Billboard Latin Music Awards, and a Grammy. Her music, fashion, and iconography have influenced every facet of pop culture, transcending the entertainment world and influencing socio-cultural spaces world-wide,” Rodriguez said. “I grew up listening to Selena and wanted to create a course that highlighted her impact on not just Latinx culture, but pop culture in an international scope.” 2205

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Starting Monday, San Diego County residents will be able to cast their ballots early for the Nov. 3 election.The San Diego County Registrar of Voters office in Kearny Mesa, located at 5600 Overland Ave., will be open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. to allow San Diegans to vote early.Due to coronavirus-related health and safety restrictions, voters must wear a mask and practice social distancing. Both voters believe this upcoming election is too important to sit out, and they didn’t feel comfortable mailing in their ballots.“I think this is the most important election in my lifetime. There’s going to be a lot of changes in the next year or two,” Milburn told ABC 10News.Sisco added, “I had to come and vote. To be honest, I felt bad I didn’t start voting until Obama came into office. I should have been voting even back then.”Both decided to come early concerned about having to wait in long lines which election officials want people to be mindful of. Officials believe this election will bring out the county’s highest voter turnout to date.The San Diego County Democratic Party came to the Registrar of Voters to promote early voting, saying it will speed up the results.Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, the Chair of the San Diego Democratic Party, said, “If you want to have the count and not be waiting election night … The more people that vote early the better for everyone, the results will come in sooner.”In a statement sent to ABC 10News, the county’s Republican Party said they are “encouraging Republicans to vote early.”Meanwhile, officials said ballots are being mailed out on Monday to the 1.9 million registered voters in San Diego County.This summer, citing restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, state officials said all registered California voters would receive mail-in ballots. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University's Interfraternity Council voted this week to ban social gatherings on campus this fall.The Thursday night vote bans all IFC social events and requires that all IFC recruitment events be held virtually to curb the spread of COVID-19. IFC's social moratorium also prevents fraternities from hosting any formal or informal events at chapter facilities or in satellite houses."The fact of the matter is that COVID-19 is currently a very real concern in our SDSU community," Lee Abed, IFC president, said. “Because of this, we would like to ensure that our community sees COVID-19 have as little of an impact as possible. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to halt all social events effective immediately.”The ban only applies to IFC members and does not affect College Panhellenic Association, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, or the United Sorority and Fraternity Council. Any chapters that violate the guidelines will be referred to the IFC judicial board for review, the school says.With some exceptions, most of SDSU's courses will be held online this fall, though some students will still be living in on-campus housing or in the surrounding College Area during the semester. 1256

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Scripps Health revealed Tuesday plans for major new construction projects and buildings at its hospitals in San Diego County.The master plan includes flexible design spaces for evolving technology in patient rooms, operating rooms, laboratories and diagnostic centers, Scripps officials said.More care will be delivered on an outpatient basis at clinics and other facilities so Scripps can use acute care hospitals to care for the most seriously ill patients, said the company."This is our vision to build the health care system of the future - starting today," said Scripps president and CEO Chris van Gorder. "Our focus is on delivering the right care in the right setting that reflects the changing health care needs of the communities we serve across the San Diego region."The projects will be financed by operating revenues, borrowing and philanthropy, Scripps said.Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla:Construction includes a new seven-story, 401,000 square-foot hospital tower. It will feature a woman's health center, nursery, and neonatal ICU. The building should be finished in 2024.Scripps Mercy Chula Vista, Scripps Green Hospitals:The facilities will undergo seismic retrofitting. The work will start in 2022 in Chula Vista and 2027 at Scripps Green.Scripps Mercy San Diego:The campus will be the largest project for the health care system. The existing acute care building will be replaced with a new 710,000 square-foot 15-story tower. Most of the rooms will be private. The central energy plant will also be upgraded. Construction will start in 2022 and end in 2027.Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas:Plans include a new 185,000 square-foot three-story acute care building, a new medical office building, seismic retrofitting and energy plant upgrades. The work will be finished in 2024.Other projects:Construction includes two new Scripps MD Anderson outpatient cancer centers at Scripps Mercy San Diego and Scripps Radiation Therapy Center in La Jolla. Scripps will also build a clinic on Jefferson St. in Oceanside and renovate its Gateway 2 building in Chula Vista. 2116
