SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than a week before the election, there are reports of political yard signs being stolen and vandalized, and in some cases, appearing in yards.Sunday night, just before midnight in a cul-de-sac in El Cajon, surveillance video shows a car driving slowly before it stops to let someone out."A shadowy figure, looks young, maybe 10 years old, gets out of the vehicle, runs in, and grabs a political sign," said Brandon Spaulding.Spaulding says the sign being taken belonged to his neighbor and it read "Trump/Pence, Make America Great Again." That same night, Spaulding's sign, which had been vandalized days before, also disappeared.The apparent thieves in the Sunday's thefts: a child and an adult."Very disappointed and frustrated ... being a terrible role model. As parents, you’re supposed to teach children the different between right and wrong. I was always taught to love my country, and part of that is freedom of speech. Respect people's rights to say what they want to say," said Spaulding.Spaulding isn't alone. Local Republican Party officials say they've received more than a 100 reports of stolen Trump signs, a greater number when compared to previous presidential elections.In Coronado, police responded Wednesday to seven homes, where yard signs reading "Racism Lives Here" appeared in front of the homes of Trump supporters who were displaying signs or flags.It isn't just Trump backers being targeted. On the Nextdoor mobile app, ABC 10News found numerous examples of signs supporting presidential challenger Joe Biden stolen.Just south of Balboa Ave., Margo Thomas woke up Wednesday to her Biden/Harris yard sign gone."To me, it just feels like you’re stifling free speech," said Thomas.There is still no mistaking who Thomas is backing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It sounds like a deal of a lifetime - guarantee a weeklong vacation at a coastal resort every year - for a one-time payment of 0.The county of San Diego is auctioning off nearly 900 timeshares, some in areas like Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carlsbad and downtown for as little as 0. Timeshares can also be transferred to out-of-town hotels, one year at a time. The county expects many to go at the initial offering price. A timeshare is when a person shares in the ownership of a property with others, so that each gets a week of vacation per year. Many of the timeshares were repossessed after the Great Recession, when owners failed to pay at least five years of property tax. "For one week of family bliss in a vacation once a year, this may be the opportunity for as little as 0," said Dan McAllister, the county treasurer-tax collector. "But it is a buyer beware sale."San Diego attorney Dan Eaton said there are many risks to buying a timeshare, and getting out of one can be very difficult."If you think you're just buying a 0 timeshare and you've got access to the timeshare for life without any further cost, that's a huge mistake," Eaton said. Timeshares include annual fees - including maintenance - that can get very expensive."If you stop paying those fees, they can foreclose," Eaton said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Many drivers around San Diego say they’re worried about being cited after seeing what some people call “smog checkpoints.”Motorists recently came across one of the mobile smog checks on Nimitz in Point Loma. A roadside team was inspecting cars to gather data in hopes of improving air quality.The mobile unit is set up to look like a DUI checkpoint, but stopping is voluntary. "I look ahead, and I see lights. It's obviously police action, and I'm thinking maybe there's a car accident,” said Nanci Washburn.Washburn said the activity created traffic backup, making her late for a meeting. "Here is a CHP car. Two officers, there's a whole blue tented area here with chairs. Once I got past that, here is a lift to put a car on."Washburn says the first thought that went through her head was that authorities were targeting older vehicles due to emission problems.10News spoke to the California Highway Patrol and the agency behind the smog checks, the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Those agencies say it’s not a checkpoint and no one is being impounded, rather, it’s a voluntary survey to help the state meet air quality standards.The agencies involved claim drivers aren’t penalized for not participating. "There's no fines and no penalties if they pass or fail, it's just informational. And we use this information to help us manage and evaluate the California Smog Check Program,” said Michael Lafferty.Essentially, the state is policing their program, officials claim.
