CHONGQING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Environmental sanitation workers from southwest China's Chongqing Municipality have collected 78,000 tonnes of garbage from the Yangtze River near the Three Gorges Dam, ensuring the dam's safe and effective operation after its water level was raised.More than 68,000 workers in nearly 21,000 boats retrieved the garbage. In late October, the water level in the dam was lifted to its designed maximum of 175 meters, allowing the dam to play its full flood control, power generation, navigation and water supply roles, said Wang Yuankai, a Chongqing municipal work administrator.Raising the dam's water level increased the surface area of water in the dam. It also increased garbage collectors' workload, with about 60 percent more garbage appearing. The cleanup operation helped ensure the water quality of the dam and its navigability. The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest water-control and hydropower project.

BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- China's efforts to deal with lawsuit-related public petitions have seen positive results with 616 such cases being resolved as of the end of October, figures from the Ministry of Justice show.Since March, when a campaign to manage cases of public petitions and complaints began, judicial and administrative departments across the country have dealt with 6,501 lawsuit-related petition cases."In order to avoid lawsuit-related public petitions from the root, prisons and detention centers across the country have launched training programs for prison police to promote their management and law enforcement capacities," Vice Minister Hao Chiyong said Wednesday at a meeting. In China, many public petitions and complaints involved mistreatment of prisoners in detention centers as police sought confessions by allegedly torturing detainees."Through these efforts, the number of lawsuit-related petition cases have dropped significantly," Hao said.In addition to police training, local governments were told to carefully consider and check corruption-prone cases and those strongly felt by the public, and deal with these cases in accordance with laws and regulations.According to Hao, the ministry is planning to let mediation play a larger role in solving public conflicts and complaints by organizing legal workers to provide legal aid and guide people to express their demands in a reasonable manner.Figures released this September by the State Council Information Office show that, in 2009, the number of letters from, and visits of people for petitioning, dropped by 2.7 percent over the previous year, a decrease for the fifth consecutive year.
BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- China will never seek hegemony, regardless of its growing power, Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai reiterated the official stance Friday.Cui made the remarks at the second Lanting (Blue Hall) Forum in response to a question on whether China will gradually ignore its former leader Deng Xiaoping' teaching of "maintaining a low profile."Cui said that although China's state power had greatly strengthened over the past 30 years after the reform and opening up, China would not change its foreign policy or its development goals, "as it's not in accordance with China's long term interests."Cui also said it was true that China has made notable progress over the past few years, but it was also true that China still lagged far behind the United States. The Lanting Forum, initiated by China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is a platform for communication and exchanges between officials, the business community, academia, media and the public. The forum aims to create a channel to facilitate discussions on foreign policies and issues of common interests. The theme of the second Lanting Forum is "China-U.S. Relations in the New Era."
