The entertainment world is still reeling from the loss of Chadwick Boseman, who died on Friday at the age of 43. Boseman had reportedly been privately fighting colon cancer since 2016, meaning some of his most iconic roles — including those in films like Black Panther, Marshall and 21 Bridges — were likely filmed between grueling chemo treatments.In the face of such an insurmountable loss, doctors and medical professionals hope that Boseman's cancer battle can shine a light on the dangers of colon cancer in young and middle-aged people and encourage them to undergo annual screenings.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colon cancer is currently the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. In 2017, more than 50,000 people died of the disease.And while colon cancer is most common in people 50 years and older, researchers say cases among younger people are on the rise.Researchers say that doctors have been able to catch the disease early in older people because of a push for increased screenings, but they're still at a loss for why the disease is increasing in young people — though rising rates of obesity may be a factor.Furthermore, Boseman's death is highlighting the rates of colon cancer in Black Americans — according to the American Cancer Society, Black people have the highest rates of colorectal cancer of any racial or ethnic group in the U.S.But what are the symptoms of the disease?According to the American Cancer Society, colon cancer typically presents with:Change of bowel habitsFeeling the need to go, but not feeling relief afterRectal bleeding with bright red bloodBlood in the stool making it look dark brown or blackCramping or abdominal painWeakness or fatigueUnintended weight lossWhile those symptoms don't necessarily guarantee a cancer diagnosis, the American Cancer Society recommends anyone with those symptoms visit a doctor.The Mayo Clinic adds that the following could leave a person with a higher risk of colon cancer:Old age (50 and above)Race factors (Black men are 24% more likely to develop colon cancer than white men, and Black men die 47% more likely to die of the disease than white men)History of colon tumors or polypsInflammatory intestinal conditions, like ulcerative colitis or Chron's diseaseFamily history of colon cancerA diet low in fiber and high in fatSedentary lifestyleDiabetesObesitySmoking/alcohol useHistory of radiation treatments in the abdomen 2468

The Federal Reserve is warning that an escalating trade war would pose a big threat to the economy.But for now, it's sticking with its plan to raise interest rates — whether President Donald Trump likes it or not.In minutes of its most recent meeting, released Wednesday, central bankers warned that a "major escalation" of trade disputes could speed inflation and cause businesses to pull back on investment.Such an escalation could also reduce household spending and disrupt companies' supply chains, participants noted.Some business leaders reported that recent tariff increases have already begun to cause higher prices. Others have reduced or delay investment spending because of uncertainty about future trade policy.Still, some Federal Open Market Committee members noted that most businesses concerned about trade disputes hadn't cut back their spending or hiring, but "might do so if trade tensions were not resolved soon."In the meantime, the central bank is standing by its plan for higher rates as the economy strengthens, according to the minutes.The Fed is expected to raise rates twice more this year, starting in September.The Fed meeting, held July 31 and August 1, was the first after Trump began lashing out at Fed Chairman Jerome Powell for hiking rates. The president told CNBC in July that was "not thrilled" with the Fed's actions.He used similar language on Monday in an interview with Reuters, arguing the central bank should be doing more to help the economy."I should be given some help by the Fed," said the president, who himself appointed Powell to lead the central bank.Presidents have historically avoided commenting on Fed policies. The central bank is designed to be independent from political interference.The Fed's minutes made no mention of Trump's criticism as a factor in its decision-making.Since Trump took office, the Fed has raised rates five times, including twice this year under Powell. The Fed has been carefully and gradually raising rates over the past several years to keep inflation in check and prevent the economy from overheating.After two further rate hikes in 2018, it has penciled in three more rate hikes in 2019.Fed Chairman Jerome Powell told the "Marketplace" radio show in July that he was "deeply committed" to maintaining Fed independence."We do our work in a strictly nonpolitical way, based on detailed analysis, which we put on the record transparently, and we don't take political considerations into account," Powell said in the interview.Powell is expected to speak on Friday at an annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. 2611

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a safety alert about flying with dry ice onboard, in anticipation of the huge nationwide distribution project anticipated to start in the next few days once the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is approved for use.The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines both need to be kept at extremely cold temperatures, requiring the use of dry ice during transit.Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide that is pressed into blocks or pellets. It doesn’t melt into a liquid, it moves directly from a solid to a gas and that process can happen quickly at high altitudes.That can cause problems onboard a plane, such as causing the plane to weigh less at times during the flight and change its center of gravity.“CO2 sensors installed or carried in the aircraft or worn by the pilots and other crewmembers will assist the operator and crew in recognizing hazardous concentrations of CO2 and implementing effective risk controls,” the FAA’s safety alert recommends.In addition, they encourage maximum ventilation onboard while on the ground and in the air, asking crewmembers to check air conditioning units and auxiliary power units before flight.Exposure to elevated levels of CO2 can cause drowsiness or dizziness, and higher levels can impact breathing eventually leading to hypoxia and death.The FAA also recommends that “pilot training on specific conditions and procedures can improve pilot decision-making in the event of a CO2 detector alert or other system abnormalities.”Friday morning, Health and Human Services Director Alex Azar said Americans could begin getting the COVID-19 vaccine next week once the FDA and CDC give it emergency use approval. 1676

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was simply trying to warn Americans about the dangers posed by ticks and the diseases they spread. Instead, they ended up unintentionally ruining some of their followers' appetites.Tick-borne illnesses are on the rise, so the CDC has been pushing Americans to check for ticks after spending time outdoors. On Friday, the agency reminded its followers just how small those the pests can be, tweeting two photos of a poppy seed muffin."Ticks can be the size of a poppy seed.
