In recent years, he filed lawsuits against artists like Kanye West and Jay-Z for sampling his work. But it was his potent refrain about systemic racism in America, covered and sampled dozens of times, that continues to resonate today.It wasn’t until a decade into his musical career that the soul singer penned his most powerful single“I wrote it because that type of thing was happening to people and then they killed Dr. King,” said Johnson.It was the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. That made him question the dream.The lyrics painfully questioning the black experience: “Looking back over my false dreams, that I once knew… Wondering why my dreams never came true… Is it because I'm Black?”“I didn’t want to write something that was militant,” said Johnson. “I wanted to write something that was truth. It was truth. Is it because I’m Black? It was.”Released in September 1969 “Is It Because I’m Black” struck a nerve.“In this world of no pity… I was raised in the ghetto of the city,” he sang.Call-in requests catapulted it to number 11 on the Billboard Soul Singles Chart in just weeks.Though, the Black concept album failed to find financial success, 50 years later, Johnson is now in his early 80s and seeing the resonance of his lyrics on the streets.“I didn’t know it would last this long,” he said. “But it looks like this song is the topic of the times. The times right now.”The killing of George Floyd, he says, is a response to the question he first posed – “Is it because I'm Black?”It is in the face of renewed examinations of race in America and calls for justice that Johnson is hopeful.“The younger whites and the younger Blacks should make it happen,” he said. “When they join together to make it happen, this world will be a beautiful place.”And one day he hopes the question won’t need to be asked. 1988

The color coordinating — white with black trim — is thanks to Elon Musk, the driving force behind both SpaceX and Tesla. NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken like the new look. The true test comes Wednesday when Hurley and Behnken climb aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and, equipment and weather permitting, shoot into space. It will be the first astronaut launch from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center since the last shuttle flight in 2011.The launch also marks the first attempt by a private company to send astronauts into orbit. CBS Television Studios has released a statement after "NCIS" star Pauley Perrette implied that "multiple physical assaults" were the reason she quit the hit series.In a series of tweets earlier this week, Perrette -- who played forensic scientist Abby Sciuto -- talked about "tabloid articles out there that are telling total lies about me" and referenced her not "spilling the beans."She also mentioned "a very rich, very powerful publicity 'machine'" she also alleged was spreading false information about her before tweeting the reason she says she left."Multiple Physical Assaults," Perrette tweeted. "I REALLY get it now. Stay safe. Nothing is worth your safety. Tell someone."She left the long-running CBS crime drama after 15 seasons on the series in an episode aired last week."Pauley Perrette had a terrific run on NCIS and we are all going to miss her," CBS Television Studios wrote in a statement provided to CNN."Over a year ago, Pauley came to us with a workplace concern," the statement went on to say. "We took the matter seriously and worked with her to find a resolution. CAMPO (CNS) - Investigators sought Friday to determine what caused a solo car crash that killed an 84-year-old motorist on a rural road east of Lake Morena.The Boulevard man was headed south on a curving stretch of Buckman Springs Road in the Campo area when his 2000 Toyota Camry veered off the east side of the roadway near Oak Drive about 8:40 p.m. Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol.The vehicle hit a tree and overturned, ejecting the driver through the front passenger-side window, CHP public-affairs Officer Travis Garrow said.The motorist, whose name was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the crash, Garrow said. 722

Carnival Cruise Lines announced Wednesday that it had canceled most cruises that were scheduled to embark from U.S. through the end of January 2021.In addition, the company announced that all cruises embarking from Baltimore; Charleston, South Carolina; Long Beach, California; Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans and San Diego has been canceled through the end of February and that all cruises on the Carnival Legend that embark from Tampa, Florida had been canceled through March 28.In a tweet, Carnival said that when it restarts operations in 2021, it will focus on cruises embarking from Miami and Port Canaveral, Florida. Later, it will begin sending cruises out of Galveston, Texas. 690
