UPDATE 2:48 PMA group of demonstrators have gathered at Carlsbad Village Drive and are marching towards Carlsbad Boulevard.SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several protests are planned Saturday throughout San Diego following week-long protests in the U.S.Simultaneous protests began at roughly 10 a.m. in both Del Mar Heights and the County administration building. More than 3,000 gathered in downtown San Diego while roughly 300 demonstrated in Del Mar. "The large group of 3000+ peaceful protestors have begun to march onto Ash St. They will be going North on 6th towards Hillcrest. We will be temporarily closing numerous streets to allow the march to continue," police said on Twitter. "The group is still North on 6th Ave at Balboa Park. Traffic in Hillcrest will be impacted shortly. Motorists, please be patient and expect delays," the department added. "I've been racially profiled four times throughout my life," said the protest's organizer, Charles Brown. "I want discussions, I want conversations, this cannot continue to happen."Brown decided to plan the protest Tuesday.The protest ended before 2 p.m. in front of the pride flag in Hillcrest. "It symbolizes so much, it's very welcoming of anyone that wants to be accepted and I just thought that would be the perfect way to resolve today's event."Brown said he was happy to see the protest remaining peaceful, but was left slightly disappointment by one thing."I was hoping that some of the civic leaders would have shown up today," he said. Two people were wounded Wednesday night in a a shooting at the UAB Hospital-Highlands in Birmingham, Alabama, and the suspected gunman was found dead, police said.Birmingham police responded to an active shooter situation and said they found two people with gunshot wounds.During a search of the hospital, they found a suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. That person has been pronounced dead.There is no threat to the community or anyone else in the hospital, police said. 489

UPDATE: 9:15 P.M.A man has been taken into custody after an hours-long standoff with officers at a Hillcrest rehabilitation center.SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police Department officers are surrounding a Hillcrest neighborhood Saturday working to peacefully end a standoff with a person believed to be armed.According to SDPD's official Twitter page, the incident started around 4 p.m. after receiving reports about a man with a gun in the 4000 block of Sixth Avenue, east of Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego.Police told 10News that around 4 p.m., an employee of the Hillcrest Health and Rehabilitation Center found a homeless man showering in a facility bathroom-laundry room.The man barricaded himself in the bathroom and has refused to speak with police. He has also vandalized the room using a fire extinguisher.The room is isolated away from the rest of the rehabilitation center, so patients there have not been evacuated but are being told to shelter in place.Police have called on the department's Emergency Negotiating Team and a SWAT team to assist with the incident. 1087
