INDIANAPOLIS — Six people are suing Conagra, the company that manufactures Pam and other canned cooking sprays, after being severely burned and injured when a can of the cooking spray exploded or caught fire, they say.The law firm representing the six individuals, Koskoff Koskoff and Bieder, issued a press release Tuesday saying their lawsuit "aims to highlight the dangers of certain household cooking spray cans and Conagra's refusal to recall them."Raveen Sugantheraj, a medical student in Indianapolis, was burned back in March. His girlfriend, Rachel McCree, shared his story because Sugantheraj was still in the hospital having multiple surgeries at the time. McCree said Sugantheraj had been cooking when a can of Pam cooking spray sitting near the stove top exploded, causing a fire. Once the couple put out the fire, they noticed Sugantheraj had been severely burned and he was taken to the hospital where he had to undergo multiple skin grafts and other surgeries from the burns on the upper part of his body. "He's a full-time med student. He's educated. He's very smart ... he had no idea — I had no idea," McRee said at the time. "We know to keep cooking oil away, especially not on the stove top, but we had placed it far enough to where we thought it was OK."The law firm says their independent testing, over the course of several years, found a defect in the bottom of Conagra cooking spray cans that made them an extreme safety hazard. They claim Conagra has discontinued production of the new can design, but has refused to issue a recall for the already-shipped product. “It is beyond irresponsible that, to increase profits, Conagra Brands made and sold cans of household cooking spray that are susceptible to explosion, choosing not to use the safer designs as it had for the last sixty years, and failed to warn consumers about the very serious risks,” said J. Craig Smith of Koskoff Koskoff & Bieder, the law firm that represents the victims in each of the cases. “Perhaps more alarming is the fact that, to this day, Conagra apparently refuses to institute a nationwide recall to ensure that the defective cans sitting on store shelves right now are removed before someone else suffers permanent injury from an explosion. Each day that these cans remain on store shelves, Conagra’s negligence puts consumers in danger.”The six different lawsuits against Conagra Brands Inc, were filed in Cook County Superior Court in Chicago, home of Conagra's headquarters. The lawsuits claim the company's product is dangerous and caused injuries to people in home kitchens and at least one restaurant. James Wiseman, the freshman basketball star for the University of Memphis who accepted payment in 2017 from his future college coach for his family's housing, has been suspended for 11 additional games and has been ordered to pay ,500. Wiseman has already missed one game, totally his suspension to 12 games.Collegiate athletes are barred from making money off their name, image and likeness, and universities compensate basketball players with free tuition, room and board. It is unknown if Wiseman will be able to come up with the funds necessary to continue his collegiate career following his suspension. Wiseman's punishment came as a result of his college coach, former NBA star Penny Hardaway, giving Wiseman's family ,500 to help pay for Wiseman's family to move to Memphis. Hardaway was then the coach of an AAU squad in Memphis, and wanted to Wiseman to join his team.A year later in 2018, Hardaway was given the top job at the University of Memphis. But it was Hardaway's past connection to Memphis as a donor that made the payment to Wiseman improper in the eye's of the NCAA. After being ruled ineligible entering the 2019 season, Wiseman sued to be reinstated before the season. A judge issued an injunction, legally forcing Memphis to play Wiseman despite him being ineligible. After playing three games, Wiseman dropped the suit. The NCAA said that Wiseman playing three games despite being ineligible was considered as part of the penalty. "The benefit was impermissible because of Hardaway’s status as a Memphis booster," the NCAA said in a statement. "Hardaway had made donations to the school in the past, including million to help build the Penny Hardaway Athletic Hall of Fame at the school. Boosters cannot provide financial assistance to prospective student-athletes, their family members or friends unless that assistance is generally available to other members of the student body and is not given based on athletics ability."Memphis said that it will appeal the NCAA's decision.The ,500 Wiseman has been ordered to pay will go to a charity.Wiseman is considered one of the top prospects for next year's NBA Draft. 2164

Don’t panic, though — both are treatable and pets will usually make a full recovery if the symptoms aren’t ignored, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). However, even in mild cases, they can create a headache for owners as their pet’s body fights off the illness.First up: leptospirosis. This is an infection caused by leptospira bacteria, which is found in soil and water. This usually affects dogs and is less common in cats, according to AVMA.Pets will typically come into contact with this bacteria after heavy rainfalls or while playing in or drinking out of rivers, lakes, streams and other standing water, or after exposure to wild animals. Leptospira, often called lepto, lives in standing water and mud. Pets can become infected if the bacteria moves from the source to the mucus membranes in a dog’s mouth or an open wound, according to AVMA. It’s then spread through the body via the bloodstream.
