Jeanine Sherman's first thought on weight loss surgery was similar to a common perception: it's the easy way out or a last-resort method to lose weight. “And I thought, ‘really? Bariatric surgery? Am I to that point?’” she says. At 5-foot-5-inches tall and around 230 pounds, Sherman’s primary care doctor told her she was a candidate when she asked about weight loss medication. At the time, Sherman had a very high BMI but no other weight-related health issues. For three years, Sherman researched ways she could avoid surgery. “If I copy this lifestyle, live the lifestyle of a bariatric patient and if I learned their daily eating habits, their exercise habits, well then I can lose the weight and not have bariatric surgery,” she recalls thinking. After gaining 30 additional pounds, Sherman decided surgery was best. “I tell anybody that I talk to that, that day is one of the top ten days of my life,” she says. Maintaining her weight around 143 pounds now, Sherman found her voice through the hashtag #iamabariatricpatient. “Many patients were ashamed to talk about the surgery and didn’t want to share that they had surgery with friends or family,” Sherman says. Sherman says stigmatizing someone because of their weight will typically only cause them to gain weight, not lose it. The Obesity Action Coalition tries to break the stigma with support. Researchers are trying to find out as much as they can about great white sharks.After a couple of attacks involving people last year, there are new efforts to learn more about these animals. It’s moments like the incident at Nauset Beach South that shark experts are studying more closely. Video taken of the beach shows white sharks feeding on seals close to the shore. Now, researchers are launching new studies, including one looking at the feeding habits and behaviors of these sharks. “We're essentially going to be giving iPhones to white sharks to track their activity in three dimensions at a really fine scale,” explains Megan Winton, a research scientist with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. Winton and other researchers will be tagging sharks with devices similar to what's in smartphones. “We'll be able to identify how often they're feeding on seals. We'll be able to look for relationships with feeding activity and environmental conditions,” Winton says. The data would be given to officials to use to provide better warnings on beaches. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is currently pouring over data on a population study they just finished. “Based on the video footage, we were able to identify every shark we saw to an individual level,” Winton says. So far, the researchers have identified more than 300 white sharks. Winton calls it a conservation success story, thanks to protections put in place over the last few decades. “So one thing I like to remind people is that these are large, amazing animals and they're very capable predators and they're certainly deserving of our respect,” Winton says. “But they're not monsters out there, lurking our coastline menacing our beaches. They're big fish out there eating their natural prey item.” White sharks are the only natural predator to seals in the Cape Cod area, which some residents and fisherman see as a nuisance.Researchers want to see how many seals the sharks are eating and if they can impact the seal population. 2023

The opioid crisis has had a devastating impact across the country.Now, doctors in one state are tackling the problem head on, and it starts with how they treat pain in the emergency room. When Dr. Donald Stader walks through his emergency room these days, it's almost like he's a different doctor. “I used to over prescribe opioids for the first several years of my career and residency,” he says. “I was giving them out like Tic Tacs, if you will.” All that changed a few years ago, when he met a woman overdosing on heroin. “She told me that she actually got hooked after being prescribed Percocet for an ankle sprain,” Dr. Stader says. “And one thing that struck me, earlier that day I had prescribed Percocet for an ankle sprain and thought that I was practicing really good medicine.” Now, he and his hospital, Swedish Medical Center, are a part of the Colorado Hospital Association’s ALTO Project, a program aiming to reduce the use of opioids in emergency rooms in the state, using alternative pain treatment.The program is paying off.However, experts say it's too late. The crisis is so bad, so simply improving prescription practices is not enough to combat opioid abuse. In an article published in JAMA Psychiatry, doctors say in addition to tighter drug restrictions, psychiatrists specializing in depression and suicide, along with new research and treatments, are needed. Now, they treat patients with medications like Tylenol and ibuprofen. For stronger pain, they use ketamine, bentyl and lidocaine, which is often used in the dentist’s office.
