Tuesday’s virtual Democratic National Convention included the official nomination of Joe Biden for president, and a pitch from Biden's wife Dr. Jill Biden and two former Democratic presidents.Tuesday’s theme was "The Leaders We Are," and in addition to the former presidents speaking in favor of a Biden presidency, Democrats tried to once again portray Biden as a bipartisan leader.Colin Powell endorses BidenColin Powell, who served in several Republican administrations, most recently as George W. Bush’s secretary of state, delivered a full-throated endorsement of Biden on Tuesday. Despite his GOP ties, Powell has previously endorsed Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. On Tuesday, he made the case that Biden is prepared to lead the US military.“Our country needs a commander in chief who takes care of our troops in the same way he would his own family,” Powell said. “For Joe Biden, he doesn't need teaching. It comes from the experience he shares with millions of military families, sending his beloved son off to war and praying to God he would come home safe. Joe Biden will be a president that we will all be proud to salute with Joe Biden in the White House.”While not mentioning President Donald Trump by name, Powell said that the president has divided the US.“What a difference it will make to have a president who unites us, who restores our strength and our soul,” Powell said.Meanwhile, the president’s campaign slammed Powell and Biden on Twitter for green lighting the war in Iraq.It was no mistake following Powell’s statement was a video highlighting the relationship between Biden and Republican Sen. John McCain, who died in 2018 from brain cancer. McCain’s wife Cindy participated in a video montage of the Biden-McCain friendship.Former President Bill Clinton slams Trump’s COVID-19 responseFormer President Bill Clinton, who has been a speaker at every Democratic National Convention for the last four decades, decried Trump’s response to the coronavirus. During his remarks, Clinton said that Trump has denied responsibility for the effects COVID-19 have caused in America.“At first he said the virus was under control and would soon disappear,” Clinton said. “When it didn't, he was on TV every day bragging on what a great job he was doing, while scientists waited to give us vital information. When he didn't like the expert advice he was given, he ignored it.“Only when COVID exploded in even more states did he encourage people to wear masks. By then many more were dying. When asked about the surge in deaths, he shrugged and said, It is what it is.' But did it have to be this way? No.”On Tuesday, the United States’ death toll from coronavirus-related illnesses surpassed 171,000.Jill Biden speaks from former classroomJill Biden spoke live from Brandywine High School in Wilmington, Delaware, where she was an English teacher from 1991 to 1993.The former second lady and wife of the Democratic nominee made a personal pitch, vouching for Biden’s character. She spoke on the tragedies her husband has faced in life, losing his previous wife and infant daughter in 1972, followed by the death of his son from brain cancer in 2015.“How do you make a broken family whole? The same way you make a nation whole: with love and understanding, and with small acts of kindness,” Dr. Biden said. “With bravery and unwavering faith.""We're seeing that our differences are precious and our similarities infinite. We have shown that the heart of this nation still beats with kindness and courage. That's the soul of America Joe Biden is fighting for now,” she added. 3605

Vaping among America's teenagers continues to climb, while the use of other substances — such as alcohol and opioids — has declined in recent years, according to a new report.Monday's report, called Monitoring the Future, comes from the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research and is based on an annual survey of drug and alcohol use and attitudes among eighth-, 10th- and 12th-graders in the United States. This year's survey included 44,482 students from 392 public and private schools across the country.Behind drinking alcohol, vaping was the second-most common form of substance use, the study showed, with 17.6% of eighth-graders, 32.3% of 10th-graders and 37.3% of 12th-graders reporting vaping in the past year. Last year, the annual survey found that prevalence of vaping was 13.3% among eighth-graders, 23.9% among 10th-graders and 27.8% among 12th-graders.Vaping involves using an electronic cigarette, hookah or similar device to inhale certain vapors or aerosols, which could contain substances such as nicotine, marijuana or flavoring."What we are seeing is a change in the patterns of drug taking among teenagers in that they are the lowest that we've seen for many years," said Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which funded the report."So we have very good news," she said, "but at the same time, we have to be vigilant, because of this very high uptake and embracing of vaping by teenagers that could lead them then to the administration of other drugs." 1543

TULSA, Okla. — A north Tulsa mother is concerned after she says she found thousands of dollars of unused school supplies and more than a dozen folders of private information from former students. The district says it’s common to get new curricular materials, but have limited storage to keep old materials. One former McKinley Elementary mother says it’s a shame it’s not put to better use.Kat Knight's living room is filled with watercolors, flashcards, unused lesson plans, play-doh, and rulers.“There’s nothing wrong with it," Knight said.“National Geographic, come on people," Knight said. "You can’t update that stuff; it’s history.”It was all found in dumpsters at McKinley Elementary.“I think they’re doing a great disservice to themselves and a lot of people," Knight said.Knight is homeschooling her 5-year-old daughter this year. The supplies she found is saving her thousands of dollars.“I might have saved a little more than ,000," she said. “I understand updating books, I get that. But can we donate these books?”Knight also found tests results from former students and personal information — student ID numbers, addresses, and phone numbers.“I understand if maybe it was a mistake but whose mistake was it?" parent Carolyn Trude said. "Are they going to be punished for this? Because this is wrong.”Tulsa Public Schools says it’s protocol to shred private information, but sometimes mistakes happen. They encourage community members to bring those materials back to the district.“I'm not a wasteful person but apparently our school boards and our schools are," Knight said.Knight is now ready to start the year without having to spend a lot of money, but wonders if other parents who homeschool their children need help.“If you’re not going to use it, we will," she said. 1805

Two men who claim to be members of the Boogaloo Bois are facing federal charges for trying to help Hamas, a designated foreign terrorist organization.Boogaloo Bois and sub-groups are a loosely-connected group of people with violent anti-government stances; some members were seen at racial injustice demonstrations this summer wearing Hawaiian shirts and carrying long weapons. Many have a negative view of officers and government structure, advocating for the injury or death of police.Social media groups claiming to be part of the Boogaloo Bois movement have attracted attention this year and tens of thousands of members online, according to USA Today.Michael Solomon and Benjamin Teeter call themselves members of the group, and of a sub-group called Boojahideen, and were allegedly seen opening carrying firearms in residential neighborhoods in Minneapolis following the death of George Floyd and the demonstrations that followed.According to the FBI’s investigation of Solomon and Teeter, they “possessed firearms and substantial quantities of ammunition and that Solomon, Teeter, and other members of the Boogaloo Bois and Boojahideen discussed committing acts of violence against police officers and other targets in furtherance of the Boojahideen’s stated goal of overthrowing the government and replacing its police forces.” 1343

Two Tennessee lawmakers have proposed a bill that would end child marriage in Tennessee.According to a press release Monday, the bill would make marriage age 18 and up – with no exceptions. The bills are sponsored by Sen. Jeff Yarbro and Rep. Darren Jernigan.According to the Pew Research Center, Tennessee is tied for the 6th-highest rate of child marriage. The current law allows 16 and 17-year-olds to marry when parents join in the marriage license application. Judges or county mayors may also approve marriages of people younger than 16, with no minimum age, according to a release.  "Current Tennessee law, would allow either a county elected official or a county judge to approve a marriage for a 15 year old, 14 year old, 9 year old," said Sen. Yarbo. "We think that is relatively insane."The founder of Unchained At Last, Fraidy Reiss, also claimed girls as young as 10 years old were married to men in their 20s in Tennessee. The organization collected marriage license data from 38 states and found that Tennessee has married thousands of children.  1097
