SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the loss of a young South Bay woman to COVID-19.In mid-September, Elvira Martinez became the first in her family to come down with COVID-19 symptoms. She tested positive and was hospitalized days later. Around the same time, her daughter Cassie, who lived with her mother at a home in Nestor, started feeling sick."Her first symptoms were a cough and then a fever in after that," said Cassie's boyfriend Ricardo Ferreyra.A week later, Ferreyra brought her to the ER."She couldn't hold down food, barely able to stand up," said Ferreyra.She was admitted and diagnosed with COVID-related myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. Her brother David says in the next 24 hours, she would suffer two heart attacks. On Saturday, Cassie Martinez, who had no underlying conditions, died at the age of 29."I miss her so much. She had the beautiful personality of anyone I've ever known. She walked into a room, and it lit up," said David Martinez."I'm heartbroken, in a million pieces. She was so caring, put everybody else first," said Ferreyra.Ferreyra says it was love at first sight the day he met her at the insurance company they both worked at more than eight years ago."She captivated me and has done so ever since that day," said Ferreyra.He had decided to propose to her, possibly on their eight-year anniversary in mid-October."I wanted to take her out on a sailboat, spend some time together and propose in the middle of the ocean ... She is my soulmate, somebody I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. We had so many plans," said Ferreyra.Family members aren't sure how they contracted the virus. Both Cassie and her mother were taking precautions and staying close to home. Her mother remains on a ventilator in an ICU.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 1856

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- If you are experiencing mental fatigue like never before, you are not alone. Many people who are used to forging ahead in times of crisis, like this coronavirus pandemic, say the feeling is unfamiliar. Emily Chandler of Vista says she never could have imagined her kids would still be distance learning in the fall. "This has been going on so long, and I'm just exhausted," Chandler says. Her three sons are in three different schools and her oldest, Timmy, has autism. Helping them all with school means studying up on things herself. Marriage and family therapist Serene Carruthers, of Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital, says what Chandler is feeling is tied to the seemingly endless nature of the pandemic."It really is because our body is built to respond to stressful events typically that last for a duration of a short period of time," says Carruthers. "Some experts call it surge capacity. Like a battery our adaptive system can provide us with the mental, physical and emotional power to survive a short-term emergency. Then it needs to be recharged which is easier said than done during a pandemic because for many people, their self-care rituals have been upended or canceled.""It is a very lonely time and I'm not getting that energy, that recharge," says Chandler. Carruthers says not to underestimate the power of play, which is free and can be done anywhere. She also recommends shifting expectations, maintaining connections with loved ones, keeping a gratitude journal about the good in your life, and exercising even if it's just walking in your home. Chandler says the reopening of her gym helped her feel like herself again, and she and Carruthers both say it's all right to ask for help, which Chandler says she's glad she did."I got on an anti-anxiety medication and I'm not embarrassed about that. It's really, really helped me," Chandler says.What has also helped is her boys have been troopers, making it clear that sometimes the biggest challenge can also bring the greatest joy. 2031

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It looks like just another small apartment. Living room. Bedroom. Kitchen.But the apartment complex 10News toured is unlike any other. It's a solution for homelessness."People go into treatment, they get out, they relapse and the go back in and they get stuck in this thing we call the churn of in and out, and in and out of services."So Chris and Tammy Megison came up with a solution: Solutions for Change. The idea is to get families with children off the streets and into a program that would change their lives forever."We get them jobs right away, put them to work so they can learn the soft skills of working," Chris Megison said. "They're up at 5:30. Kids are fed and off to school. And now they're going to classes, they're going to work."Solutions for change works because of its motto, driven by accountability. It's a 1000 day program. Every client must have a job, and most work in the solutions aguaponic farm. They grow their own organic food, and what they don't eat they sell, and the proceeds go back into the program. "They're not looking to be a band-aid fix, they're looking to be a 'hand up' organization. They're not lowering the bar for people who find themselves in a pretty dark tragic place, they're trying to raise the bar and set people up for future success," San Diego County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar said.And since 1999, Solutions for Change has helped 900 families escape homelessness. People like Melissa Martinez and her children who not long ago were separated without a place to call home."It's put us all back under one roof. It's actually be a lot easier than I could have ever imagined, getting everybody to and from school, to and from work, we're really united and working as a team. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Jewish leaders celebrated the second night of Hanukkah Monday, lighting the second candle of a massive Menorah outside City Hall.As the second night of the Jewish Festival of Lights got underway, Rabbi Zalman Carlebach said it was important for leaders to show their support and celebrate in light of recent anti-Semetic incidents around the U.S. "In light of the current events that are happening around the country, this world could use some more light. America could use some more light," said Rabbi Carlebach.San Diego has numerous Menorah lighting events planned as well as other celebrations throughout the county as Hanukkah continues — running through Dec. 10.
