SUZHOU, April 3 (Xinhua) -- China's police chief Meng Jianzhu Saturday called for nationwide coordination to beef up security for the Shanghai World Expo, which runs from May 1 to Oct. 31.Meng, a State Councilor and Minister of Public Security, made the call in a inspection tour to Suzhou city in Shanghai's neighboring province Jiangsu, where he urged police in Shanghai and its adjoining provinces to execute more security efforts.He asked the police in Shanghai, the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang to fully recognize the challenge and complexity of the security work, and to speed up the building of a coordination mechanism among them.Security departments must step up efforts to detect and remove all kinds of security threats, be fully prepared for challenges, and minimize the affect of the security work on people's lives, he said.

HAIKOU, April 25 (Xinhua) -- China's fishery administration said on Sunday it had started regular patrols of the South China Sea, sending two vessels to take over from two others currently escorting Chinese fishing boats in the area."China Yuzheng 301 and 302 take over from China Yuzheng 311 and 202, which have been patrolling the sea area of Nansha Islands since April 1," said Wu Zhuang, director of Administration of Fishery and Fishing Harbor Supervision for South China Sea under the Ministry of Agriculture.He said the patrol ships were sent to escort Chinese fishing boats in the South China Sea and reinforce China's fishing rights of the waters around Nansha Islands.The two ships set sail from Sanya, a coastal city in China's Southernmost Island Province of Hainan, on Sunday.China's patrol vessels escort the country's fishing boats and help treat fishermen who fall ill, Wu said. BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Major indices of China's large ports mostly pointed to better performance in April with increasing cargo throughput and exports volume, the Ministry of Transport said Wednesday.According to latest figures posted on the ministry's website, China's large sea ports and river ports saw rapid throughput growth in cargo, exported goods volume and containers from January to April.Passenger throughput via large ports, however, fell 18.5 percent from a year earlier to 295 million in the first four months of 2010, the ministry said.Large ports are classified in China as sea ports with an annual cargo throughput above 15 million tonnes and river ports with an annual cargo throughput above 10 million tonnes.From January to April, cargo throughput in those large ports jumped 20.2 percent year on year to about 2.48 billion tonnes, the ministry said.About 206.5 million tonnes of goods were exported via the large ports during the January-April period, up 27.2 percent from a year ago.Container throughput rose 22.4 percent year on year to 436.81 million TEUs in the first four months, according to the ministry.
