LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s workplace safety regulator has cited a frozen food manufacturer and its temporary employment agency for failing to protect hundreds of employees from the coronavirus at two Los Angeles area plants. California’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued citations this month to Overhill Farms and Jobsource North America and proposed over 0,000 in penalties for each company. The companies could not be immediately reached for comment. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Wealthy California political donor Ed Buck was indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury for two overdose deaths in his West Hollywood apartment and charges he provided methamphetamine to three other men, one of whom survived two overdoses.The indictment returned in U.S. District Court charged Buck with distributing meth resulting in the deaths of Timothy Dean in January and Gemmel Moore in 2017. Buck had previously been charged in Moore’s death after his arrest last month.Buck, 65, who is white and has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to Democratic causes, preyed on vulnerable men, most of them black, some of them homeless and addicted to drugs, and pressured them to let him inject them with drugs as part of a sexual ritual, prosecutors said.A defense lawyer has previously said Buck, 65, denies a role in both deaths.In addition to including a charge for Dean’s death, the indictment adds charges that Buck provided meth to three other men, including one who said Buck threatened him with a power saw in December if he didn’t leave his apartment and another who overdosed twice in a week last month before escaping the home to get help.That last victim’s harrowing account led to Buck’s arrest _ more than two years after activists began staging rallies outside his rent-controlled apartment and pressuring the local district attorney to bring charges in the July 27, 2017 death of Moore, 26.Moore’s mother and her supporters have said Buck got favorable treatment because of his status and reputation and that the victims were ignored because they were gay black men, drug users and often sex workers. The activists had repeatedly warned that if Buck wasn’t stopped, others would die.Five months after Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey declined to bring charges in Moore’s death, Dean, 55, was found dead Jan. 7 on the floor of Buck’s living room _ the same place Moore died.The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reopened the case after Dean’s death. In July, the U.S. attorney’s office took the case after sheriff’s detectives approached a federal task force investigating opioid overdoses.Lacey, who is black, has said politics played no role in her decision not to prosecute Buck in the deaths of the two men. She defended her decision and said there was insufficient evidence to proceed with murder charges.The federal charges bring a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years if Buck is convicted. That penalty would be greater than the state drug charges he was arrested on, Lacey said.Buck ran unsuccessfully in 2007 for City Council in West Hollywood, which is known for its large LGBTQ community. LOS ANGELES (CNS and KGTV) - Amid whipping winds and dangerously low humidity, fire crews continued efforts to snuff to the Getty Fire in the Sepulveda Pass Wednesday, fearful that the extreme weather conditions ignite new flames. At 5 p.m., mandatory evacuation orders and warnings were lifted in all areas with the exception of an area bordered by Kenter Ave., Sunset Blvd., Mountain Gate Ave., and a section near Sepulveda Blvd. and the 405 freeway. As of Wednesday evening, the fire was listed at 745 acres, with 27% containment. But forecasters said the area could be blasted with winds ranging from 30 to 50 mph, along with occasional gusts of up to 70 mph. RELATED: MAP: SoCal Fires burn in Santa Ana conditions``Adverse weather conditions will be the biggest challenge for firefighters,'' according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. ``In anticipation of the extreme Santa Ana wind event, the LAFD has recalled and staffed additional resources for any emergency that may arise over the next 24 hours. These resources will be strategically placed in key locations that have a history of being prone to wildfire.'' The National Weather Service issued what it deemed an ``extreme red flag warning,'' which went into effect at 11 p.m. Tuesday, amid predictions some mountain areas could be blasted with gusts of up to 80 mph. The warning covers the bulk of Los Angeles County and will remain in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday. ``The peak of the event is expected to be Wednesday when damaging wind gusts between 50 and 70 mph will be likely for the wind-prone areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, with isolated gusts to 80 mph in the mountains,'' according to the weather service. ``This Santa Ana wind event will likely be the strongest we have seen so far this season. These strong winds combined with a long duration of single- digit humidities and dry fuels will likely bring very critical fire weather conditions, making this an extreme red flag warning event.'' As of Wednesday, the Getty Fire, which broke out around 1:30 a.m. Monday morning alongside the San Diego (405) freeway near Getty Center Drive, had destroyed 12 homes and damaged five others. One firefighter sustained a minor injury. About 760 firefighters were battling the blaze. Despite the attention focused on the Getty Fire, the Los Angeles Fire Department dispatched three strike teams to Ventura County Wednesday morning to help fight the Easy Fire that erupted in Simi Valley, forcing evacuations and threatening the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. The agency also sent crews to help knock down a small brush fire in Calabasas. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department also noted that it was monitoring the Easy Fire, but it had not moved toward Los Angeles County as of Wednesday afternoon. The Los Angeles County Fire Department sent Firehawk water dropping helicopters and two strike teams to Simi Valley as part of its mutual aid agreement. Locally, however, attention was focused on the Getty Fire. LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas noted Tuesday that it would take ``one ember, just one ember downwind, to start another brush fire.'' At the fire's height, evacuation orders were issued affecting 10,000 structures, both residential and commercial, in an area between the 405 Freeway and Temescal Canyon Road, from Sunset Boulevard north to Mulholland Drive. Evacuation orders were lifted Monday night for the Mountaingate community south of Mulholland. Evacuation centers remain open at the Westwood Recreation Center at 1350 S. Sepulveda Blvd., near Wilshire Boulevard, and the Palisades Recreation Center, 851 Alma Real Drive. Evacuation centers for animals were established at the West Valley Animal Shelter at 20655 Plummer St., the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter at 11361 Pico Blvd. Hansen Dam Recreation Center at 11770 Foothill Blvd. in Lake View Terrace was opened to receive large animals. Authorities confirmed Tuesday afternoon the Getty Fire was caused by gusting winds that severed a tree branch and blew it into a Department of Water and Power electrical line, causing sparks that fell onto the brush below. ``This was, simply put, ... an act of God,'' Garcetti said. Marty Adams, general manager of the Department of Water & Power, told reporters the agency had just completed a brush-clearing operation in the area in July, trimming 248 trees ``in excess of what the state requires.'' He noted that the branch in question came from a tree ``outside of our clearance zone'' but was carried by the wind into the power line. Adams said the power line itself remained intact and is still delivering electricity to the area. The San Diego Freeway, a southbound stretch of which was closed for much of the day Monday, was open through the Sepulveda Pass, but exit ramps between the Ventura (101) Freeway in Sherman Oaks to Sunset Boulevard were blocked. The Getty Center museum was not believed to be in immediate danger from the flames. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Four people were wounded, one fatally, when gunfire erupted Tuesday morning at a large party taking place at a mansion north of Beverly Hills where police had earlier responded to multiple calls of disturbing the peace.Firefighters and paramedics sent to the 13200 block of Mulholland Drive about 12:45 a.m. located three adults who had been wounded, and they were treated at the scene, then taken to a hospital, according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department. A fourth person was found nearby with an injury to his wrist, Prange said, adding the victim's injury was not caused by gunfire.One shooting victim was hospitalized in grave condition and the other two were hospitalized in critical condition, Prange said.A woman about 35 years of age died at a hospital, said Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Chris Ramirez. Information was not immediately available on her identity.Ramirez said the other two shooting victims found at the scene were males, and they were displaying stable vital signs Tuesday morning.A woman who also had been shot went to a hospital in a private vehicle, and was in stable condition, Ramirez said.Ramirez said the crime apparently was gang-related, and no arrests have been reported. No suspect information was immediately available.Ramirez said the shooting was being investigated by detectives from the LAPD West Bureau Homicide office, and he urged anyone with information on the crime to call 213-382-9470.The house had been rented for the party, according to reports from the scene.A video posted to social media captured the sounds of the gunfire, at least six shots initially fired, followed by at least eight more. The video also contained blurry images of what appeared to be two gunshot victims.The Los Angeles Police Department received at least five calls from residents who reported instances of disturbing the peace in the neighborhood beginning about 6:30 p.m. Monday. Responding officers found a large party taking place at a three-story home with about 200 people attending, according to the LAPD.Officers enforced traffic and parking violations, but did not enforce the county's health order banning large gatherings, the department said. Video from NBC4 showed vehicles being ticketed.The organizer of the party, identified by NBC4 only as "Kenny," told the station the party was for his friends and masks were made available to guests, who also had to undergo a temperature check before being allowed inside.No party attendees could be seen wearing masks in video shot by multiple broadcast outlets.A food truck was on site and multiple high-end vehicle, including Lamborghinis and a Rolls Royce, could be seen on the video posted to social media.The party is the second large-scale gathering held amid the coronavirus pandemic in the L.A. area, in spite of public health restrictions barring parties.On Friday night, dozens of people were seen attending a party -- again, mostly without masks or physical distancing -- at the Sassafras Saloon in Hollywood, a gathering that was alleged to have been attended by local law enforcement members. A person familiar with the gathering told the Los Angeles Times the party was planned for members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, but the agency has denied any involvement in the event and insisted that people seen in online video from the event do not work for the department.The Los Angeles Police Department issued a statement Monday saying it was aware of the gathering and was working to determine if any LAPD employees attended.Los Angeles County public health director Barbara Ferrer said Monday the state Department of Alcohol and Beverage Control was investigating the party, along with the county.
