INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — From foster mom, to adoptive mom, to kidney donor. This family took in a little boy and gave him a lifesaving gift.Nicole Alles and her husband have been fostering children for more than a decade. A few years ago, the couple decided to take a break and decide if this is what they wanted to continue doing.That’s when they received a call about a baby boy that no one was willing to take in.“WE got a call for him in December and they couldn’t find anyone to take him in because of all of his medical complications,” said Nicole.Sebastian was born in October of 2014 with a long list of health concerns including end stage renal, collapsed lungs and stage 4 chronic kidney disease."I mean the biggest issue was that his kidneys weren't working and we knew we were going to need to start him on dialysis before he even left the hospital,” said Dr. Myda Khalid, children’s kidney doctor at Riley Hospital.Sebastian would eventually need a new kidney.Nicole, a home healthcare nurse, knew she could help Sebastian. The couple took him in and she did his dialysis at home."We took him in under the premise that he would probably go back home soon, but that did not happen,” said Nicole.After four months, Sebastian’s biological parents discontinued their parental rights.In 2016, the Alles family legally adopted him.His two foot tall box of medical records was delivered to their home shortly after.That’s when Nicole learned she and her newly adopted son shared a blood type.After waiting for Sebastian to be strong enough for a transplant, Nicole went through extensive testing and learned she was a match.“When they found out I was a tissue match for him that was when we were just so excited because that just meant so much to us that I was able to give him the kidney,” said Nicole.Today Sebastian is one year post operation. He’s healthier than ever.His kidney transplant, one of many successful surgeries he’s had to improve his quality of life.“To look at him, you really wouldn’t know he’s been through as much as he’s been through,” said Nicole.Nicole believes Sebastian was meant to come into her life so she could be his mother and his donor.“Being able to save his life... it makes me very emotional, very fortunate... very blessed... very happy because I know that I was a part of that,” said Alles. 2346

One Indianapolis mother had to endure not only everyday life with a newborn but controversy with pumping breast milk at her place of employment.Katrina Culhane returned from maternity leave in July of after having her son, Hunter. She worked for the Indiana BMV's central office in downtown Indianapolis. To continue breastfeeding, she needed to pump at work."I thought being the state they would have a plan for me," Culhane said.Culhane says her options on location to pump were extremely limited. One choice was to go up several floors to another department where another mother was often using a room. Her second choice was to reserve a conference room."They kept promising it to employee relations that they were going to have a room and they never had a room," Culhane said. "It wasn't OK that I had to constantly pump in the bathroom."Culhane says she felt frustration from her bosses when needing to adjust her scheduled breaks to make her reservation in the conference room."I worked hard for them. They treated me like dirt. They made me feel like crap. I just want to go pump," Culhane said. "It was stressful. Every single day...it was so stressful."State law requires the following from state and political agencies:Paid breaks to pump.Reasonable effort to provide a room or other location other than a toilet stall.Reasonable efforts to provide a refrigerator to keep breast milk cold."It is absolutely important for a workplace to support these moms, especially when you are first going back to work," Lauren Duncan, a certified lactation specialist, and Donor Mother Coordinator at The Milk Bank, said.RTV6 reached out to the BMV to get a response to this situation. A spokesperson said Culhane was fired for violating the state's workplace harassment prevention policy. The spokesperson also told RTV6 there are plans to add a private room for mothers to breastfeed on the fourth floor of the building where the BMV is located."I just want to pump for my son," Culhane said. "And I wanted it to be known that no one deserves to be treated like that in the workplace. No one."Culhane denies harassing anyone during her time at the BMV and feels she was fired for complaining about lack of space to pump.The BMV says they do have a private location in the Indiana State Government Center where she worked in accordance with the law and the State's Support for Nursing Mothers Policy, 2479

  

Laurie Sylvia, the fourth person in Massachusetts infected with Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) since the beginning of August, has died.Sylvia was being treated at Tufts Medical Center in Boston after contracting the dangerous mosquito-borne virus that causes brain swelling in humans, said Jeremy Lechan, Tufts' senior media relations specialist.The other cases of infection this month are those of two men over 60 and another man between 19 and 30.This is the first time EEE cases have been reported in Massachusetts since 2013.State epidemiologist Catherine Brown told CNN in a statement that warmer temperatures and above-average rainfall in July sped up virus replication in mosquitoes, which could explain the uptick in EEE activity.Migratory birds might have even spread a new strain of the virus, though lab tests that could prove that have yet to be completed, she said.In Florida and Delaware, the virus has been detected in sentinel chickens, though neither state has seen any cases reported in humans.EEE kills one-third of those infectedEEE is rare but potentially fatal. Anywhere from 5 to 10 human cases are reported every year, but about 30% of all cases are fatal, according to the 1213
