SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police sought public help Tuesday to identify a pair of suspects who robbed two San Diego State University Students at gunpoint just blocks from campus.The students were walking about 1:35 a.m. Monday at Campanile Drive and Dorothy Drive when two men approached and demanded their belongings, according to the SDSU Police Department. One of the suspects was armed with a handgun.The victims complied with the demands and were not injured, according to police, who said the suspects fled in a white, four-door car heading north on Campanile Drive toward Montezuma Road.Both suspects were described as roughly 170-pound black men, one about 5- foot-7 and the other about 5-foot-10. They both wore dark hooded sweatshirts, saggy pants and sneakers.The San Diego Police Department is investigating the robbery, but university police released information as part of a community safety notification.Anyone with information about the crime was asked to call the SDPD at (619) 531-2000. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System announced today 40 local high school students who took part in an annual essay contest were awarded new laptop computers and backpacks.Students from more than 70 high schools around the county entered the MTS and Coca-Cola Laptop Scholarship Contest, which required the applicants to submit an essay on ways to get more students to use public transit such as lowering student transit passes.The winning students, from 27 schools, received a 15.6-inch HP Touch-Screen laptop and a Northface backpack that doubles as a laptop case. MTS officials honored the winning students on Friday at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center."It was great that winners came from so many campuses,'' said MTS CEO Paul Jablonski. "Their essays presented convincing ideas. Students were required to think critically about the way public transit shapes our communities.''The contest comes from a partnership between MTS, Coca-Cola Refreshments of San Diego and the San Diego County Office of Education. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - People who visited the Lucky Lady Casino in San Diego on weekends over a six-month period ending in late September may have been exposed to tuberculosis, county health officials reported Tuesday.The Health and Human Services Agency is working with the casino to inform patrons and staff who may have been exposed between Feb. 23 and Sept. 30, said county spokesman Jose A. Alvarez.HHSA will provide testing at no cost to patrons who were potentially exposed, Alvarez said. Testing will be offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 8 and 9 at the casino at 5526 El Cajon Blvd., he said.People who visited the casino are encouraged to contact their doctor or county TB Control if they cannot get tested on Dec. 8 or 9, Alvarez said.Beginning Tuesday, testing is also being offered to casino staff at no cost by county Occupational Health, according to HHSA officials, who noted it can take eight to 10 weeks after exposure for someone to test positive for TB.Those wanting more information may call Lucky Lady Casino at (619) 287- 6690 or the county TB Control Program (619) 692-8621.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said most people who are exposed do not become infected. Symptoms include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss.The number of annual TB cases in San Diego County has decreased since the early 1990s, Alvarez said, with 258 cases reported in 2016, 237 in 2017 and 163 cases so far in 2018. 1691

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County has opened cool zones as the county faces scorching temperatures amid the coronavirus pandemic. A cool zone will open at noon today in the former Sears building at Chula Vista Center, providing socially distant and disinfected spaces to beat the heat.With a heat wave expected this weekend and into next week and the city's recreation centers and libraries closed to the public due to the pandemic, the city issued a statement saying the opening of a cool zone was paramount.The Chula Vista cool zone will be open when temperatures exceed 85 degrees, and will be operated by city recreation staff. It will remain open through next week.RELATED: Dangerous heat set to sweep through San Diego CountyVisitors to the zone, located at 565 Broadway, are required to wear a face covering while inside and may bring one personal bag.There will be seating available and movies playing. Each area will be disinfected between uses. Water is allowed, but no food, no smoking and no pets.
