HANCOCK, Maine – A company in Maine is recalling cold smoked salmon that may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium which is responsible for foodborne botulism, a form of food poisoning.Mill Stream Corp. (Sullivan Harbor Farm) announced the recall Wednesday and warned consumers not to consume the products even if they don’t look or smell spoiled. The smoked salmon was sold and distributed in Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, Utah, Iowa, Tennessee, Minnesota, Colorado, Florida, Arizona, Wisconsin, Washington, Georgia, Illinois, Virginia, Michigan, and Texas. The products were sold through retail, wholesale and online orders between March 6 and September 17, 2019 in vacuum sealed packages in the following sizes: whole salmon side, 2 lb., 1 lb., 8 oz., and 4 oz.The affected products are marked with the following lot numbers marked on the back of the packages: 7049, 7050, 7051, 7052, 7054, 7056, 7058, 7060, 7062, 7066. Consumers who purchased the products frozen are advised to keep them frozen until ready to use and thaw under refrigeration immediately before use. If a consumer has refrigerated these products, they should dispose of them immediately.Botulism is a form of food poisoning that can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.No illnesses have been reported to date. 1653

Families of victims are suing the Broward County school board, the sheriff's office and others for alleged negligence associated with the February 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people.Parents of five students killed or injured in the shooting announced they were filing lawsuits Wednesday morning in Florida state court.Lisa Olson's son, William, was shot and survived the massacre but she said he has struggled since."To our family and to our son, this lawsuit will bring some accountability to the table," she said.The lawsuit she and her husband filed also names a school resource officer, a security monitor, the shooter, the Henderson Behavioral Health Clinic where the shooter was treated, and the state department of children and families. The lawsuit says the school board failed to take reasonable steps to provide proper security and says the sheriff's department "negligently implemented and executed its policies and procedures" by not going immediately into the building where the shooting has happening.More than a dozen other lawsuits on behalf of some survivors and victims' families will be filed by the end of the week, attorneys said at a news conference.A spokeswoman for the Broward County Sheriff's Office said, "We make it a practice not to comment on pending litigation."The school district said it "does not comment on potential, pending or ongoing litigation," according to Cathleen Brennan, a spokeswoman for Broward County schools.In December, a 1547

Getting immersed in nature is a right we all share. However, access to the wilderness isn't always easy."As creatures on this planet, we are intrinsically tied to the land," says Amanda Jameson, donor relations manager with Big City Mountaineers. "Whether we get to experience that day-to-day is a matter, often, of privilege."The national nonprofit Big City Mountaineers aims to teach critical life skills in youth by offering transformative outdoor experiences.After a week-long backpacking expedition, four teenage girls unpack and clean their gear. For most, it was their very first time spending the night under the stars."They got us out, taught us how to set up a tent, taught us how to get water, how to cook outside… just the basics," Jacqueline Jimenez says. Thanks to Big City Mountaineers, Jimenez says she has discovered a newfound love for the outdoors. "I didn't think I'd like the outdoors as much as I liked it. I didn't think I would enjoy backpacking, carrying like 40-pound bags on my back," she says. "But I enjoyed it so much, and it’s something I want to look forward to, and incorporate into my life."Jameson says Big City Mountaineers offers trips at no cost to the youth, so those who wouldn’t normally get outside, get a chance to get outside. The organization has impacted the lives of metropolitan youth in Denver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Minneapolis and Boston for the past 30 years. The kids are chosen for the trips through school and community partnerships."If you're trying to give your kids these experiences, it can be very expensive," Jameson says. "And then, you're talking about getting the time off, and trying to find a place to go, and making reservations, and planning in advance. All of those things can be difficult."However, Big City Mountaineers takes the difficulty out of it. Jameson says the week-long expeditions and overnight camps teach life skills, but not the transformation. That comes from within."The resilience, the tenacity, the problem-solving. All of these are skills that our youth already have," Jameson says. "By putting them in an unfamiliar environment in situations that they may have never encountered before, we're just allowing them to make those skills more explicit for themselves."Jimenez says that was certainly true for her, and she's packing away lessons of her own strength to carry with her through the rest of her life. "I'm so thankful for BCM for believing in me when I didn't believe in myself, and pushing my limits that I didn't even know I had," she says.
