Matthew Kraft left for Kearsarge Pass on the Sierra High Route Feb. 23 and was scheduled to return Mar. 4 or 5 near Bridgeport. His rental car, a gray 2016 2-door Jeep Wrangler has not been found at the trip’s starting point in Independence. 11 law enforcement, federal, and state agencies are searching for Kraft. CALEXICO (CNS) - The federal government today broke ground on the first border wall replacement project awarded under President Donald Trump.Customs and Border Protection is replacing a 2.25-mile section of border fencing constructed in the 1990s using scrap metal with a 30-foot-high bollard-style wall just south of downtown Calexico. The project covers an area west of the Calexico West Port of Entry, according to the agency.This project ``is one of Border Patrol's highest priority projects,'' according to a CBP statement ``Although the existing wall has proven effective at deterring unlawful cross-border activity, smuggling organizations damaged and breached this outdated version of a border wall several hundred times during the last two years, resulting in costly repairs.'' 794

Businesses may be reopening, but they're still struggling to pay their rent.About 40% of major retailers didn't pay their rent in May, according to numbers from data firm Datex Property Solutions.Some companies are warning they won't be able to pay rent for months. Starbucks for example is asking for landlords to adjust lease terms and rent for at least 12 months.It's an even worse situation for some small businesses.“I would think landlords ordinarily are not that sympathetic, right, because they can get somebody else to pay the bill,” said Jack Strauss, an economics expert and professor at the University of Denver. “In this case, a landlord is foolish to ignore the struggling small business.”Strauss says it will be difficult for landlords to find a new tenant quickly, so they have an incentive to delay or partially reduce rent.Businesses in malls are getting hit especially hard. The country's latest mall owner recently sued Gap over three months of unpaid rent.“Being sued kind of makes sense by the landlord to take a heavy hand, but at the same time, it doesn't make sense because they're going to have a lot of, they're potentially going to have a lot of empty spaces,” said Strauss.Punchbowl Social, a national restaurant and entertainment spot just closed one location in the Denver area and one in the Chicago area, acknowledging that landlords are trying to ensure the success of their business.But the CEO says, "landlords cannot expect to maintain status quo economic terms that were negotiated in pre-pandemic times."Strauss agrees with that. (KGTV) - The Recon Challenge at Camp Pendleton takes Marines through a grueling 30-mile course, comprised of obstacles including a 1,000-yard open-ocean swim, mountainous terrain, and underwater knot-tying exercises.The challenge honors the fallen Marines of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve. Participants run in the name of a fallen Marine, paying tribute by hanging dog tags on the iconic battlefield cross at the finish line."It's probably a collection of some of the toughest people on the planet, I mean it's, imagine a marathon but you're carrying 50 pounds plus you're swimming in the ocean, the pools, and doing these other events," said Adam Sorensen, who was medically retired from the Marine Corps two years ago.
