BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo said Tuesday that China will unswervingly pursue a path of peaceful development and play a constructive role in the United Nations.Dai made the remarks at a reception commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations (UN).On Oct. 25, 1971, the 26th Session of the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758 with an overwhelming majority and decided to restore the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China in the UN."This opened a new chapter in the external relations of the People's Republic of China and promoted the friendship and cooperation between China and all countries and peoples who love world peace and justice," Dai said at the reception hosted by the Foreign Ministry in Beijing.It also enhanced the universality, representativeness and authority of the UN and strengthened the forces for world peace and human progress, he added.He said, for the past 40 years, as the largest developing country and a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has followed the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, called on countries across the globe to practice tolerance and live together in peace as good neighbors, and made great contributions to world peace, common development and international cooperation.This year marks the beginning of the second decade of the new century, and the world has undergone great, rapid and drastic changes, Dai said."The international community is becoming a global village and countries find interests converging in a scope and depth never seen before," he said, adding that the trend of peace, development and cooperation has gained more popular support, while the international situation remains quite fluid and complex.He said the United Nations, as the most universal, representative and authoritative inter-governmental organization, should seize opportunities and meet challenges in the political, security, economic, development, social, humanitarian, cultural, arms control, and judicial fields, among others, and reinvigorate itself with fresh vigor and vitality."Under the new circumstance, the role of the UN should only be strengthened, rather than weakened, and its authority be upheld, rather than impaired," he said.China has released the White Paper on China's Peaceful Development, which solemnly declared that China will unswervingly pursue the path of peaceful development, he said.China will work actively, through peaceful, open, scientific and common development, to expand international cooperation, take part in international affairs, honor its due international responsibilities and obligations, and play a constructive role in the UN, he said.Dai pledged that China will join other countries to make even greater contributions to building a harmonious world of durable peace and common prosperity and a brighter future for mankind.China's entry to the UN 40 years ago made the international body a more representative international organization, said Kasymzhomart Tokaev, director-general of the UN Office at Geneva.He said China has played an important role in the UN.With the rise of its global status and influence, China, as a major power, will continue to shoulder its responsibility and play a more positive role in creating a more secure, just and peaceful world for future generations, he said.Before the reception, Dai had a brief meeting with Tokaev, exchanging views on the UN's role as well as China's cooperation within the UN.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday approved HEMACORD, the first licensed hematopoietic progenitor cells-cord cell therapy.HEMACORD is indicated for use in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation procedures in patients with disorders affecting the blood forming system. For example, cord blood transplants have been used to treat patients with certain blood cancers and some inherited metabolic and immune system disorders."The use of cord blood hematopoietic progenitor cell therapy offers potentially life-saving treatment options for patients with these types of disorders," said Karen Midthun, director of FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, in a statement.HEMACORD contains hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) from human cord blood. Cord blood is one of three sources of HPCs used in transplants. The other two are bone marrow and peripheral blood. Once these HPCs are infused into patients, the cells migrate to the bone marrow where they divide and mature. When the mature cells move into the bloodstream they can partially or fully restore the number and function of many blood cells, including immune function.

MANILA, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- No Chinese national has so far been found dead in the flashfloods triggered by tropical storm Washi ( local name Sendong), a Chinese embassy official said on Sunday.When asked on possible casualties of Chinese nationals, an offical with the Cebu Consulate said they just contacted with relevant persons in disaster affected areas, and there is no report on the casualties of Chinese citizens. BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Beijing will offer residents 20,000 rental bikes this year to ease the city's notorious traffic jams, according to authorities with the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform.Five hundred rental kiosks will be set up around the city to offer residents over 20,000 rental bikes, the commission said.Beijing has also proposed creating new bike lanes in some areas, including main streets, historical and cultural conservation areas and some major business districts, from 2011 to 2015, according to the commission.The capital city currently has about 5 million vehicles on its roads, leading to serious traffic congestion that frustrates the city's residents on a daily basis."A lack of bike lanes is the reason why I refuse to ride a bike. Bikes and vehicles are using the same lanes, and that frightens me and makes me feel unsafe," said Beijing resident Song Tao.People often park cars on the city's existing bike lanes, pushing cyclists onto the vehicles' lanes, said Song.To ease traffic congestion, Beijing has made various efforts to encourage people to opt for modes of public transportation.On Dec. 31, Beijing opened three new subway lines, bringing the number of subway lines in Beijing to 15, with a total length of 372 kilometers, said Beijing Metro Spokesman Jia Peng.Beijing will open four more subway lines in 2012, according to information released at a rail transit construction mobilization conference.Amid other measures to ease traffic in 2011, city authorities decided to allow only 240,000 vehicles to be registered annually, slashing the new car registrations by two-thirds from the 2010 level.Meanwhile, vehicles are banned from roads one day each week according to license plate numbers.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The launch of the Mars Science Laboratory, which contains the car-sized Curiosity rover, has been delayed by a day to Nov. 26, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced Monday.The delay will "allow time for the team to remove and replace a flight termination system battery," NASA said in a statement.The launch is now scheduled for 10:02 a.m. (1502 GMT) on Saturday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. The launch window remains open for one hour and 43 minutes.Curiosity is about twice as long and more than five times as heavy as any previous Mars rover. Its 10 science instruments include two for ingesting and analyzing samples of powdered rock delivered by the rover's robotic arm.Scheduled to land on the Mars in August 2012, the one-ton rover will examine Gale Crater during a nearly two-year prime mission. Curiosity will land near the base of a layered mountain three miles (five kilometers) high inside the crater. The rover will investigate whether environmental conditions ever have been favorable for development of microbial life and preserved evidence of those conditions.
