TUCSON, Ariz. — A team of researchers at the University of Arizona believe they've found an important clue in the fight against an aggressive form of brain cancer.Glioblastoma is the cancer that killed Sen. John McCain in August and Sen. Ted Kennedy in 2009.People are diagnosed with glioblastoma live, on average, for another 11 to 15 months. Very few survive the disease, so the group of researchers wanted to know why some patients live longer than others.Professor of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Baldassarre Stea, says the clue lies in the RNA of short and long-term patients.The team looked at the genetic variation in about three dozen patients.What they found is a gene called WIF1 is distinctly higher in patients who survive longer, according to Dr. Stea. Those who lack the gene succumb to the disease much quicker. 849

Tuesday is Election Day, and several companies are offering promotions and freebies in celebration of those exercising democracy.While there is nothing illegal about running promotions in conjunction with Election Day, federal laws prohibit companies and individuals from offering incentives for voting. That means any promotion that requires you to show an "I Voted" sticker could be in violation of 18 USC Sec. 597. The law states that any expenditure to a voter in exchange for a vote, or for withholding a vote for that matter, is in violation of the law and those giving away the expenditure is subject to a fine or arrest. The Field Museum in Chicago originally was going to offer free admission to those who showed an "I Voted" sticker, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Now, the offer is good for anyone in Illinois, regardless if you voted or not. Uber, which is among ride-sharing companies that are offering free rides to the polls through its app, said the following: "This offer is not intended to induce, nor is it conditioned on, the act of voting, refraining from voting or voting for or against any particular candidate, political party or measure."Lyft is also offering help for those looking for a ride to the polls. It will take 50 percent off the cost of a ride on Tuesday by using a promo code, which will be available on its app on Tuesday. Rental car service Zipcar is offering off a future ride for those who use its service on Election Day. If you're looking to use two wheels to get to the polls, Lime is offering 30-minute rentals of its scooters and bikes on Election Day. In the world of food, Potbelly is offering free cookies on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the only requirement being that you purchase an entree. Shake Shack is offering free French fries by either showing an "I voted" sticker or by using code "IVoted" on its app.  1938

U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said Tuesday that the USPS will not implement operational changes to mail delivery until after the 2020 election."...there are some longstanding operational initiatives — efforts that predate my arrival at the Postal Service — that have been raised as areas of concern as the nation prepares to hold an election in the midst of a devastating pandemic," DeJoy said in a statement. "To avoid even the appearance of any impact on election mail, I am suspending these initiatives until after the election is concluded."DeJoy also said that the USPS would not remove any mail processing equipment or mailboxes and would not close any mail processing facilities between now and the election. The statement did not address whether the agency would restore services or equipment that had been cut prior to Tuesday.DeJoy, a longtime ally and donor to President Donald Trump took over as Postmaster General in June. Since that time, he's instituted several changes that customers and workers have said have led to delays in mail delivery, including the elimination of overtime. More than 3,000 gathered in downtown San Diego while roughly 300 demonstrated in Del Mar. "The large group of 3000+ peaceful protestors have begun to march onto Ash St. They will be going North on 6th towards Hillcrest. We will be temporarily closing numerous streets to allow the march to continue," police said on Twitter. "The group is still North on 6th Ave at Balboa Park. Traffic in Hillcrest will be impacted shortly. Motorists, please be patient and expect delays," the department added. "I've been racially profiled four times throughout my life," said the protest's organizer, Charles Brown. "I want discussions, I want conversations, this cannot continue to happen."Brown decided to plan the protest Tuesday.The protest ended before 2 p.m. in front of the pride flag in Hillcrest. "It symbolizes so much, it's very welcoming of anyone that wants to be accepted and I just thought that would be the perfect way to resolve today's event."Brown said he was happy to see the protest remaining peaceful, but was left slightly disappointment by one thing."I was hoping that some of the civic leaders would have shown up today," he said. Twitter says it will begin removing misinformation about COVID-19 vaccinations from its site. That includes false claims that the virus is not real, debunked claims about the effects of receiving the vaccine. It will also remove baseless claims suggesting immunizations and vaccines are used to intentionally cause harm or to control people. Twitter said in a blog post on Wednesday that it will start enforcing the new policy next week. If people send tweets in violation of the rules, they will be required to delete them before they are able to tweet again. Before the offending tweet is removed, Twitter will hide it from view.Starting early next year, Twitter said it may label tweets that advance "unsubstantiated rumors, disputed claims, as well as incomplete or out-of-context information about vaccines" but may not be removed, instead be linked to "authoritative public health information" on the social media company's rules page that'll "provide people with additional context and authoritative information about COVID-19." 1043
