SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Teenage cancer survivors from Rady Chidlren's Hospital celebrated an "unforgettable" event.The annual Unforgettable Prom brought teens battling cancer out for a night of dancing and celebration — a night many of the teens miss at school while they continue to fight illness. Now in its 13th year, the dance has helped teens take a moment to celebrate that special night in every teenager's life. And everything is covered: From dresses and tuxedos to entertainment, food, and decor, thanks to volunteers and the Friends of Scott Foundation, a local non-profit that works to provide emotional and financial support for children with cancer and their families.This year's theme, Avengers "Age of Heroes," honors Ryan Wilcox, a former patient and Unforgettable Prom King, who lost hist battle with cancer. "Unforgettable Prom" was started by Carmen Delgadillo, founder of the Friends of Scott Foundation. Degadillo lost her teenage son, Scott, to Acute Lymphostic Leukemia. From that loss, Delgadillo started the foundation to help other families in need of support during their own battles with cancer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Camp Pendleton Marine accused of trying to smuggle migrants through the San Ysidro Port of Entry this month has been identified.Bryan Oneal Newell Jr. was arrested Dec. 2 by U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to Camp Pendleton. Newell is accused of trying to bring undocumented immigrants into the U.S.Newell, a junior-enlisted Marine, was being held in civilian custody while CBP and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigated.RELATED: Marine accused of trying to smuggle immigrants through San Ysidro Port of EntryCamp Pendleton said Newell was not part of military personnel sent to the border to assist personnel with border operations.Newell is the most recent Marine from Camp Pendleton to be charged in an immigration scandal. In July, 23 Marines were detained over human trafficking, drug distribution, and weapons charges, according to the base.Of those 1st Marine Division Marines, six have pleaded guilty at court martial appearances while 13 have approved agreements to leave the Marines rather than go through court martials or waiving separation board processes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The coronavirus pandemic, combined with a recently enacted state law, has created a new problem along San Diego's streets and boardwalks.Business owners say they're being overrun by vendors who set up makeshift stores and crowd sidewalks and walkways, while also luring customers out of long-established businesses."It's pretty much a free-for-all," says David McDaniel, the owner of Paradise Cove near Crystal Pier. "Anybody can sell anything, anywhere."He's partially correct. A new state law, Senate Bill 946, went into effect in 2018. Passed by the legislature and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, it decriminalizes street vending, telling cities that they can create their own guidelines and can only enforce them with tickets for vendors who violate the rules, instead of criminal charges.Several cities in San Diego County, including Carlsbad and Vista, were quick to establish their regulations. San Diego still hasn't.As more vendors set up shop, the Pacific Beach Town Council is asking city leaders to move the process along."We're calling on city leaders to end the swap meet on our boardwalks now," says Brian White, the President of the Pacific Beach Town Council. "We have lots of pedestrian traffic, bicycles, skateboards. There really is no room for this type of vending activity."Earlier this month, the Town Council sent a letter to Mayor Kevin Faulconer and the City Council asking for specific rules.The San Diego City Council started to establish new rules for vendors in 2019. Faulconer sent a draft ordinance to the Economic Development Committee.It would have prohibited vendors on the boardwalk and other high traffic areas. It also would require business permits, set hours for vending, establish distances from public facilities, require vendors to follow health and safety rules, and several other rules.That ordinance passed the committee unanimously on July 25, 2019.The city then held three public forums about it in October. But it never went to the full council for approval."It is an issue that's becoming a real problem. We definitely need to get some regulations going with this," says City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell, who represents Pacific Beach and Mission Beach."It's really up to the mayor's office to bring us these recommendations to City Council," says Campbell.ABC 10News reached out to Faulconer to see why there has been a delay in moving the draft ordinance forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The gloves are coming off in the race for San Diego County District Attorney, with a unlikely person taking shots at Genevieve Jones-Wright Friday.Rebecca Harrison, who said she’s the victim of a Balboa Park rapist, backed candidate Summer Stephan.At a news conference in front of the courthouse, Harrison said Jones-Wright, who was the public defender in the case, treated Harrison as if she was the one on trial.“Several weeks ago I found out that Genevieve was running for D.A. and it literally made me sick to my stomach. It felt like someone had kicked me because she was professing that she gives dignity and a voice to victims when that is not what I experienced whatsover,” Harrison said.Jones-Wright told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin she gave Harrison an extreme level of compassion and that the press conference was all political posturing.
