BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) issued a Chair's Statement here on Saturday, agreeing to issue the Beijing Declaration on Sustainable Development.     The statement said the leaders held extensive and in-depth discussions on issues of realizing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as well as the sustainable development targets agreed in Johannesburg, strengthening energy security cooperation, jointly addressing the challenge of climate change, and environmental protection, including water resources, forests and air, and improving social cohesion under the framework of sustainable development.     Leaders stressed the importance of mid-term review of the MDGs, and underscored the need for ASEM members to further deepen international development cooperation to meet the IADGs, particularly the MDGs, in a timely manner.     Leaders expressed their support for strengthened international cooperation on climate change that could help assess impacts and vulnerabilities, build adaptive capacities, and support adaptation actions.     Leaders also emphasized the need for the sustainable management of forest and ocean as well as other territorial, coastal and marine ecosystems.     Leaders stressed the need to focus on development needs and environmental sustainability in the energy sector. They emphasized the need for Asia-Europe cooperation to ensure the availability of environmentally sound energy at a reasonable price to support economic growth and that the latest technology should be intended to increase energy efficiency.     Leaders recognized that the impact of globalization is increasingly being felt by the people of ASEM members, and share a common interest in strengthening the social dimension of globalization and improving social cohesion.     To this end, leaders unanimously agreed to issue the Beijing Declaration on Sustainable Development.     The Seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM 7) was held in Beijing on 24 and 25 October 2008. The Meeting was the first gathering of the leaders of 45 members of ASEM since its second round of enlargement.

    BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, heard here on Wednesday a series of reports including the implementation of the 11th five-year plan and the impact of the world financial crisis.     Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, attended the conference.     Zhang Ping, minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), delivered a report on how the Chinese government has implemented the Outline of the 11th Five-Year Program for National Economic and Social Development (2006-2010). The Second plenary session of the sixth session of the 11th Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress is held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, on Dec. 24, 2008.    The implementation has been going well, with most of the goals being reached as scheduled at the middle stage, he said.     He urged more attention to be paid on expanding domestic demand, increasing innovative ability, continuing reforms on resource prices and taxes, energy saving and emission reduction, as well as increasing the government's ability to provide public services.     Zhang also gave a report on how the intensifying impact of the world financial and economic crisis is reverberating through China's economy.     Other reports included efforts to stabilize prices and prevent price hikes addressed by NDRC vice head Zhang Mao, as well as water pollution prevention and control by Environmental Protection Minister Zhou Shengxian.

TAIPEI, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- The panda pair given by the Chinese mainland to Taiwan made their debut at the Taipei Zoo Saturday evening, meeting a select group of visitors including Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou and Kuomintang Honorary Chairman Lien Chan.     "It's an honor for Taiwan to breed the two pandas, as there are only about 1,600 pandas in the world," said Ma, at the ceremony to inaugurate the new enclosure for the pandas.     About 500 orphans and children from poor families were invited by the city government to be the first visitors to the panda pair.     "It's a time for family reunions at Spring Festival, but some children have lost their families and others cannot afford to go to the zoo. That's why we invited them, and we wish them a happy new year," said the Taipei mayor Hau Lung-bin.     Huang Kai-tzong, 7, one of the invited children, was much impressed by the way the two pandas ate bamboo. To accommodate the crowds, the zoo will extend business hours until 18:00 p.m. during the Spring Festival holidays.     The city government estimates the pandas will attract about 6 million visitors to the zoo annually, double the current number.     The mainland announced in May 2005 it would donate two giant pandas to Taiwan. GUANGZHOU, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese exporters, faced with dwindling foreign orders amid global economic slowdown, are diverting their attention to domestic markets.     At the ongoing Canton Fair, China's leading trade fair, businesses that canvass foreign buyers are also focusing on the local market as their customers in the Western nations are dragged into recession by the global credit crisis.     Qiao Guan, board chairman of the Jiangsu Hotwind Sauna Equipment, said his company is planning to divert some of the business from abroad to the domestic market.     The company's sales in the United States, which accounted for about 30 percent of its total exports, had dropped by more than 20 percent this year, Qiao said.     He hoped the local sales could compensate the decreasing orders in the foreign market. "We have completed research on the domestic market, which shows some exported goods are affordable and have good sales prospects in the local market," he said.     The Himin Solar Energy Group, based in east China's Shandong Province, produces solar water heaters that are sold both at home and abroad. Xue Xinwen, head of the firm's international trade department, said the company had been losing orders as some Western countries canceled subsidies on environment-friendly imports.     "We have sent more staff to market our products to local infrastructure authorities and companies," he said.     "Domestic consumption has been greatly boosted by a robustly growing economy, creating positive situations for exporters to go local," he said.     But the readjustment can be difficult.     Li Jianlan, a worker with Wanji Plumbing Materials Co. Ltd, based in Ningbo, said an exclusive exporter like her company lacked channels and brand loyalty in the domestic market. "These are two different kinds of markets, and it takes a lot of work to be familiar with the ways business is done with local buyers," she said.     Some goods that are made for export are deemed too expensive for Chinese buyers.     Huang Yan, general manager of the L-bright Export Manufacture Corporation, said it had been very difficult to sell its products to domestic buyers as they lacked a price advantage.     Local governments, aware of the trend, are taking action to encourage the conversions. Guangdong Province, the country's major exporting base, issued a notice in June, ordering local quality inspection authorities to provide needed technical assistance to exporters.

BANGKOK, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The first Chinese charter plane organized by Chinese government landed Saturday afternoon at U-Tapao airport, some 180 kilometers from Bangkok to bring back home Chinese tourists stranded in Bangkok due to anti-government protestors' siege of the two Bangkok airports.     The first flight from China Eastern Airlines, a A300 airplane, arrived at about 4:30 p.m. local time (0930GMT) at the small and crowded military airport to board 261 passengers back to Shanghai. It will be followed by four other charter planes, from the China International Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines.     The five planes will take the first batch of some 1,400 stranded Chinese back to Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai, hopefully to take off on late Saturday. The total number of the affected travelers could hit 300,000 as the two airports remained closed, Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said Saturday.     The total of stranded Chinese, including those from Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, was estimated at about 4,000, according to the Chinese Embassy here.
