BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese general Thursday met with the head of a leading U.S. think tank and discussed the building of strong military ties between the two countries, despite military exchanges between the two nations having been frozen since January."A sound and stable China-U.S. military relationship is good for bilateral strategic trust and regional peace and stability," Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Ma Xiaotian told John Hamre, president of the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).Hamre served as the U.S. deputy secretary of defense during the Clinton administration before joining CSIS in 2000.Hamre is in China at the invitation of a leading Chinese think tank, the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, for an academic symposium."China has always attached great importance to developing military ties with the United States and has made efforts in this regard," Ma told Hamre."Stronger military-to-military ties will be a very good thing for the two countries...We should have broader and deeper contact," Hamre said.On growing bilateral military ties, Ma proposed both sides respect each other's core interests and major concerns.Both sides should also properly handle differences and sensitive issues, Ma added.Hamre said China's prosperity contributes to the world, adding that the PLA's development is "logical."The former U.S. defense official said it is necessary for the two militaries to maintain candid communication to keep stable military relations.

HANOI, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China and Vietnam vowed to promote healthy, stable and long-term development of bilateral ties with the guideline of "long-term stability, future-orientation, good-neighborliness and comprehensive cooperation," according to a joint press communique issued here on Monday by the two defense ministries.The two countries vowed to advance bilateral comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership and always be good neighbors, friends, comrades and partners, according to the joint communique issued on the occasion of Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Liang Guanglie' s visit to Vietnam.According to the communique, China and Vietnam will continue to strengthen defense cooperation to promote military ties and bilateral relations.The two sides agreed to maintain the fine tradition of exchanging high-level military delegations and give full play to the bilateral defense and security consultation mechanism, said the communique.China and Vietnam are committed to settling all disputes though peaceful means and safeguarding regional peace and stability, said the communique.The two countries reiterated to enhance coordination and interaction in multilateral forums like United Nations and ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus), an enlarged ADMM with participation of eight dialogue partners, according to the communique.China and Vietnam also expressed the willingness to deepen cooperation in tackling non-traditional security challenges under the framework of ADMM-Plus and deepen cooperation in humanitarian efforts like disaster relief, said the communique.Liang arrived in Vietnam on Sunday for an official and friendly visit. He has met with General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nong Duc Manh and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung respectively. XIAMEN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China will continue to attract large influxes of foreign investment in the next few years despite uncertainties in the global economic recovery, Commerce Minister Chen Deming said Tuesday.Although uncertainties lie in the process of the global economic recovery and the development trend of the world economy would, to some extent, affect foreign investment in China, the next few years will still be a high-tide period for foreign investment inflow into the country, Chen said Tuesday at a ministerial conference at the 2nd World Investment Forum (WIF) in Xiamen City in southeast China's Fujian Province."Currently, many countries and organizations have rated China as the most appealing destination for investment, which probably would not be changed for a few years," said the minister.Foreign direct investment (FDI) this year is set to "surpass 100 billion U.S. dollars," compared to 90 billion dollars last year, an official with the ministry predicted on Sunday.During the first seven months of this year, China's FDI increased 20.65 percent year on year to 58.35 billion dollars, according to the ministry' s latest statistics.Meanwhile, some 14,459 foreign-invested companies were established in China in the first seven months, up 17.9 percent year on year.

KUNMING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The building of a railway between southwest China's Yunnan Province and Laos will kick off on Oct. 28, according to its Chinese contractor.The 530-km railway, expected to be completed in 2015, will link Mohan port in Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna and Vientiane, the capital of Laos, said Li Zhanqun, board chairman of the Yunnan Xiaoxiang Pan-Asia Investment Co., Ltd."We would like to use more workers from Laos to help boost the employment market along the railway," Li said.The railway is part of the Trans-Asian railway network, which will cover 114,000 km and travel through 28 countries throughout the region.In 2009, China ratified an agreement on the Trans-Asian Railway Network, which was initiated by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).The agreement came into effect in June 2009.
