(AP) — A woman trying to protect her dog was killed by an alligator who pulled her into a lagoon at a private South Carolina resort Monday, authorities said.Cassandra Cline, 45, of Hilton Head Island, was walking the dog along a residential area of Sea Pines Resort when she was attacked, state and local officials said. The 8-foot (2.5-meter) alligator was later found and killed, said David Lucas, a spokesman for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources."She was walking the dog near the lagoon and the alligator came out of the water and tried to get the dog," Lucas said. "The lady tried to rescue the dog and a maintenance worker ran over to help."Both were trying to save the dog, but the alligator dragged the woman into the water, he said.The dog was unharmed."It's common practice when we have an aggressive alligator like that, we put it down, but it will take some take some time to confirm it's the right alligator," said Capt. Robert McCullough of the Department of Natural Resources.Alligator attacks on humans are extremely rare, Lucas said.Since 1976, there have only been about 20 attacks on people in the state, he said. Until 2016, none of those attacks had been fatal. In 2016, a 90-year-old woman wandered away from a Charleston assisted living facility and was found dead in a pond.Blake Smith, 34, was leaving his house Monday morning when he saw police cars and firetrucks in the neighborhood."I waited for about 30 minutes, then I started hearing rumors about what happened down the road from here," Smith told The Island Packet newspaper. "It's odd because this is the first time we've heard about an aggressive alligator around a human in the five years that we've been living here."Smith said that at times, alligators have been spotted in yards or pools, but Sea Pines quickly removed those animals."They do a good job. This is just a sad incident," he said. GENEVA (AP) — The European Union’s Earth observation program says the ozone hole over Antarctica has swelled to its largest size and deepest level in years.Experts at the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service say a strong, stable and cold polar vortex has driven the expansion, and have called for greater international efforts to ensure countries abide by an international accord to phase out use of ozone-depleting chemicals.Vincent-Henri Peuch, who heads the service, said in a statement that the ozone hole was “definitely” among the largest in the last 15 years.“With the sunlight returning to the South Pole in the last weeks, we saw continued ozone depletion over the area,” Peuch said. “After the unusually small and short-lived ozone hole in 2019, which was driven by special meteorological conditions, we are registering a rather large one again this year, which confirms that we need to continue enforcing the Montreal Protocol banning emissions of ozone depleting chemicals.”Since the ban on halocarbons, officials say the ozone layer has slowly been recovering and data shows a trend in decreasing area of the ozone hole.Ozone depletion over the Antarctic continent was first noticed in 1985. 1217

But do they really look that different?It's called the Beauty in Real Life campaign. CVS says the goal of this campaign is to create a new and more realistic standard of beauty. The way you can tell if an ad is a part of the campaign is it has a CVS Beauty Mark, a white stamp watermark that reads beauty unaltered.If you see the stamp on an ad it means that the images in the ad haven't been "materially altered." That means the brand did not "digitally alter or change a person's shape, size, proportion, skin or eye color or enhance or alter lines, wrinkles or other individual characteristics."So essentially if you saw the person in the ad walking down the street, they would look like they do in the ad. That's the goal, because in general, the editing of photos in ads really has has an impact on how women and girls feel about themselves.A survey found two out of three women strongly agree that the media has set an unrealistic standard of beauty. 80% of women feel worse about themselves after seeing a beauty ad. 90% of girls ages 15 to 17 want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance.We asked a few people what they think about this new initiative."I think that's awesome," one woman said.  "I think we've been given unrealistic beauty standards for a really long time. So it's really nice to see companies putting in women who actually look like me. I don't have to have these unrealistic standards of what I should look like.
