CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) — Border Patrol agents this week discovered several packages of narcotics stuffed inside a vehicle's gas tank at an East County checkpoint.The agents stopped the vehicle at a Campo border checkpoint at about 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. During initial questioning, a K-9 officer inspecting the vehicle alerted agents to a possible narcotics.As the K-9 officer further inspected the vehicle, the canine directed agents toward the vehicle's gas tank. Agents say they discovered 53 cellophane packages floating in the gas tank, containing about 58.6 pounds of methamphetamine worth 4,780.The driver, a 47-year-old U.S. citizen, was arrested and the narcotics were turned over to Drug Enforcement Administration. As of Wednesday, Border Patrol officials say they seized more than 2,000 pounds of meth worth more than .6 million. 852

Joe Heath queries his social studies class at Aviara Oaks Middle School in Carlsbad.Heath has been teaching for more than 30 years, and this day has his 7th graders focused on pre-20th century Japanese culture."Most of the marriages were actually arranged," Heath explains to one student. "Your Mom or your Dad choosing your spouse. How would you feel about that?" For Coach Heath, as his students like to call him, Social Studies is about connecting and empathizing with people who lived through a different time and culture - not simply memorizing abstract names and dates. "I don't take that approach." said Heath, "In large part because I don't remember those names or those dates. I'm really good with remembering concepts and how people dealt with difficulties historically....and those same difficulties we face today.""It's not just absorbing facts where you write it down and then say it later," said student Rylan Hoffius. "It's actually talking about it and understanding the deeper meanings of it." Coach Heath's lectures are like conversations as he prompts his students to take part. "With many little strokes, a large tree is felled. What does that mean?""He knows every one of his kids." said Aviara Principal Rose Flowers. She says Heath's approach resonates so well with students, discussions often continue outside the classroom. Charlottesville, Virginia, is again bracing for journalists and protesters to converge on the city as jury selection begins Monday for the man accused of killing Heather Heyer at last year's Unite the Right rally.James Fields of Maumee, Ohio, is accused of plowing his Dodge Challenger into a crowd of counterprotesters during the August 2017 white nationalist gathering, killing Heyer and injuring several other people, police say.Heyer, 32, was a local paralegal and had attended the rally to speak out against white supremacy and racism. Her friends and families say she died for her beliefs.Fields stands charged with first-degree murder in Heyer's death. He also faces five counts of malicious wounding, three counts of aggravated malicious wounding and one count of failing to stop at an accident involving a death.Separately, he is charged with hate crimes in a 30-count federal indictment. Prosecutors in that case allege Fields espoused white supremacist ideals and denounced minorities on social media before traveling to Virginia for the rally. Once there, the indictment says, he drove his car into a crowd with the intention of hurting people he targeted based on his bigoted views.The 21-year-old has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges. It's unclear whether he has entered a plea to the state charges, though a trial would not likely be necessary if he had pleaded guilty.His attorney, Denise Lunsford, did not return an email seeking comment. CARLSBAD (KGTV) -  A new airline will begin flying from Carlsbad's McClellan Airport, trying to give North County travelers an alternative to Lindbergh Field.California Pacific Airlines will take off for the first time on Friday, with a flight to San Jose. They also have flights planned for Reno, Sacramento, Las Vegas, and Phoenix/Mesa by the end of November. The airline already offers flights from Denver to several cities in South Dakota."We’ll be flying at least 15 flights a day in the next two months," says CEO Ted Vallas. "We're getting a great reception for it."Vallas says his airline will offer competitive rates, but travelers will save money in the long run because they won't have to first drive up to an hour to Lindbergh Field or pay to park.The airline hit a snag on its first morning, however, having to postpone its inaugural flight Thursday. A mechanical problem delayed the airplane in Denver.Vallas says that's not a sign of things to come, noting that his airline will have a fleet of 15 to 25 planes stationed at all cities it serves.McClellan Airport has had problems keeping commercial travel. Last spring, CalJet had to shut down after trying to launch service to and from Las Vegas.Passengers at the airport this week say they're excited about the ability to fly out of Carlsbad."It's just a 10 minute drive for me," says Carlsbad resident Walt Stringer.
