TASHKENT, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Uzbek President Islam Karimov and visiting Chinese State Councilor Meng Jianzhu both have pledged to deepen the mutually beneficial cooperation between their countries. Uzbekistan wishes to further deepen its mutuallu beneficial cooperation with China on politics, economy, trade and security, which will benefit the two countries and the two peoples, Karimov said Friday during a meeting with Meng.China-Uzbekistan relations developed smoothly in 2009, said Meng, who also attended the fifth session of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Security Council Secretaries in Tashkent.Leaders of the two countries have kept close contacts, which is a strong driving force for the development of bilateral ties, Meng said.The two countries have expanded their pragmatic cooperation in various fields and conducted effective cooperation on international and regional issues, he said.China values its traditional friendship with Uzbekistan and wishes to promote the friendly and cooperative partnership between the two countries. The partnership complies with the fundamental interests of the two countries and it is conducive to maintaining regional peace and stability, Meng said.During his visit, Meng also held talks with Uzbek Interior Minister Bahodir Matlubov and Chief of Security Rustam Inayatov.The two sides held an extensive and in-depth exchange of views on exchanges of law enforcement agencies and the promotion of law enforcement cooperation between the two countries.

BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States should keep up communication and consultation on issues concerning each other's major interests such as the Iran nuclear issue and the Korean nuclear issue.Ma Zhaoxu, spokesman of the Chinese delegation attending the strategic track of the on-going second round of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues (S&ED), made the remarks at a press briefing after the first meeting of the strategic track on Monday."The two countries should also enhance consultation and cooperation on counter-terrorism, non-proliferation and the fight against cross-border crimes," Ma said.On Monday afternoon, officials from China and the United States held two rounds of meetings, during the second half of which they discussed how to strengthen cooperation on major international and regional issues, and cooperation on international system reform and Asia-Pacific regional cooperation mechanism building."The S&ED, as an important platform, provides the two sides a good channel to discuss and consider cooperation in this regard," Ma said.Ma told the press the other four suggestions China proposed for further enhancing bilateral cooperation, including:-- To give full respect and consideration to each other's major interests and concerns while carrying out cooperation;-- To follow the globally-recognized rules guiding international relations, and peacefully resolve regional hot issues through dialogue and negotiation;-- To deal with disputes with an objective and calm attitude, and not to let the overall situation of China-U.S. cooperation deteriorate due to temporary difficulties;-- To expand cooperation, especially communication and consultation in such areas as climate change and energy security, so as to benefit the two countries and the world as a whole.He said mutual understanding and trust between the two countries had increased after the past rounds of strategic dialogues. CHENGDU, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China Saturday started construction of a center in southwestern China's Sichuan Province to train giant pandas born in captivity to live in the wild.The center is located at Majiagou of Yutang Town, Dujiangyan City, said Zhang Zhihe, head of the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base and founder of the center.The center covers an area of 134.87 hectares and will cost 160 million yuan (23.5 million U.S. dollars).After the center is completed, the breeding and research base will put 40 to 50 giant pandas raised in captivity into the center for training and research, according to Zhang.The center will cooperate with the Chengdu breeding and research base, the Wolong Giant Panda Conservation Base, the Dujiangyan Disease Control and Prevention Center for Giant Pandas and the Shaanxi Rescue Center for Endangered Animals.In the experimental zone of the center being built, the giant pandas will be trained to reduce their dependency on humans. But they will still live in cages.After five to 10 years training in the experimental zone, the giant pandas that perform well will be introduced into the "half-natural" zone.In the following five to 10 years, the pandas there will live in tree holes or caves and forage for food. But they will still receive frequent checkups and participate in artificial breeding.Then, only one or two of the giant pandas will have the chance to spend another five to 10 years in a nearly "natural" zone with little human contact. Then they will be released into the nearby giant panda natural reserve, Zhang said.Giant pandas are the world's most endangered species. Some 1,590 panda live in the wild and over 300 pandas are in captivity in China, Zhang said.China started a giant panda training project in 2003 to teach the animals to live in the wild. But the project suffered a major setback when Xiang Xiang, a five-year-old male panda, was found dead in a remote part of the Wolong Nature Reserve in February 2007.Xiang Xiang was released into the wild in April 2006 after nearly three years of training.
