IRVINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A new study claims that hookah could be more dangerous than other forms of smoking. According to the University of California study, one in five college students in the US and Europe have tried it. According to researchers who conducted the study, one draw from a pipe can contain as many substances as an entire cigarette. “Hookah mainstream smoke – that which is directly inhaled by the user – has many toxic and harmful chemicals, such as nicotine, which can lead to tobacco addiction; irritating carbonyl compounds; and benzine, a known carcinogen,” said lead author Veronique Perraud, a UCI assistant project scientist in the Department of Chemistry. “And due to the greater volume inhaled for every puff and the longer duration of a smoking session, the hookah oftentimes delivers a higher dose of those chemicals to the smoker.”The study also found that the hookah produces an outsized amount of carbon monoxide mainly due to the burning charcoal. According to the university, the study is the first to look at ultrafine particles. Particles researchers say pose a significant health risk. “One of the big myths about hookah usage is that the water in the bowl actually filters out the toxic chemicals, providing a shield for the smoker,” Perraud noted. “In the study, we show that this is not the case for most of the gases and that, possibly due to its cooling effect, water actually promotes ultrafine particle formation.” 1465

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Food and Safety Inspection Service has issued a public health alert for salad and wrap products that were produced by an Indianapolis company because they may be contaminated with Cyclospora. The recall is for beef, pork and poultry salad and wrap products that were distributed by Caito Foods LLC. The products were produced between July 15 and July 18 and were sold at a number of popular retail locations including Kroger, Trader Joe's and Walgreens. All affected products have a "Best By," "Enjoy By," "Best if Sold By," or "Sell By" date ranging from July 18 through July 23. Product labels, UPC codes and other information can be found HERE. The FSIS says they are concerned that the products may still be in consumers' refrigerators and that consumers may be at risk due to the length of the Cyclospora incubation period. Cyclospora is an intestinal illness by a microscopic parasite that is transmitted contaminated food or water, according to the CDC. It can take up to a week before someone who becomes infected shows any signs or symptoms of the illness, which infects the small intestine and usually causes watery diarrhea with frequent, sometimes explosive bowl movements. Other common symptoms include: 1284
It's a common misconception that you can just "shave off" a bunion. Turns out, it's a deformity that needs to be realigned. Doctors are now able to lower the rate of recurrence with a surgery that's three dimensional.Jennifer Anderson is an avid runner, biker and hiker who doesn't like to be slowed down.“By the fall of last year, it got to the point where it was miserable to put running shoes on, hiking boots on, bike shoes,” said Anderson. “At that point, I was like, ‘I need to get this fixed.’”She noticed a bunion developing in her early 30s, but she didn't realize until much later that it was halting her stride.“When it started causing an issue with the things I like to do athletic-wise, running, I’ve always been a runner, I like to ride my bike inside and outside, hiking, so when it got to a point when I wasn’t enjoying that stuff anymore, I knew it was time to get it fixed,” said Anderson. She started doing some research and got overwhelmed with all the types and kinds of surgeries. There are 200 different types of bunion surgeries that exist, which make it difficult to pick the right kind that works best for each situation.“I was actually discouraged because before looking at the Lapiplasty, that point was huge to me,” she said. “I was like, ‘why would I go through having a surgery if it’s going to probably come back?’”Dr. Bharat Desai walked her through what Lapiplasty does and why it's successful."So, literally we’re fusing a joint that’s unstable back to a joint that’s stable. Once a fusion occurs, it won’t change.”The Denver based Orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon says 50 to 60% of bunions are genetic. They occur over time and they tend to be more common in women.“With current standards on fashion and such people want narrower feet, this is not much different than in Japan and the geishas when they bound feet to make them narrow,” said Desai. He says sometimes it causes pain in other areas.“When you have a bunion, it’s a physical change in the alignment your body has to manage that alignment change so it compensates, it can affect knee, ankle, foot and it can affect the ball of your feet as well,” he said.Desai says Lapiplasty is successful because it lessens the chance of a bunion coming back. It permanently addresses the deformity with a 3D fix for a 3D problem.A word of caution from the doctor though:“A bump could just be a spur. Not all bumps are bunions and not all bunions are bumps and so the best thing I would advise is if you’re having pain on the big toe, see a foot and ankle specialist, because they can help you differentiate what it is. It may not be a bunion.”As for Anderson, her recovery was easier than she thought it would be. She was able to walk shortly after surgery. By six weeks, she was in athletic shoes and by the four-month mark, she was back on her feet, back on the road, and back on the trails.3D surgery seeing huge success rate for those who suffer from bunionsIt's a common misconception that you can just "shave off" a bunion. It has been the biggest secret in American politics for weeks: Who will be Joe Biden's running mate? On Tuesday, Biden announced that Sen. Kamala Harris will be his running make this November. Harris formerly opposed Biden for the Democratic nomination, and could become the first ever woman elected in a US national election. Biden's pick was not leaked beforehand, marking a rare instance in the echo chamber of Washington where news spreads quickly. So how has Biden been able to keep this process such a secret? SMALL TEAMOne major reason is the fact that Biden had a small teaming vetting potential picks. Former Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd, Delaware Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and longtime Biden aide Cynthia Hogan served as co-chairs on the vetting committee.Former White House counsel Bob Bauer, campaign general counsel Dana Remus and former homeland security adviser Lisa Monaco also were involved. Beyond that however, many top advisers were not invited to vetting meetings. That prevented leaks. VIRTUAL MEETINGSMany of the contenders met with Joe Biden virtually. It's a lot easier to keep a meeting secret when it's not done face to face. The candidates, all women, also kept their interactions with Biden a secret. It wasn't until several days after that Michigan Governor's Gretchen Whitmer's meeting with Biden was revealed.AIRPORTSA popular past time for political journalists is to track private aircrafts flying into airports near Biden's home. In recent years, VP picks have all flown via private aircraft once they've been picked. Biden's home, however, is centrally located to around a dozen airports within a 2-hour drive. Philadelphia International Airport's private terminal is only a 25 minute drive from his house. 1783
