BURLINGTON COUNTY, New Jersey — A television station in New Jersey is reporting a homeless man and a couple who were in the news for the couple's wrongdoing in keeping money it raised for a homeless man was in on the conspiracy together.The TV station is not naming its source but says there is a legal complaint filed that names Mark D'Amico, Kate McClure and Johnny Bobbitt as facing charges, including conspiracy and theft by deception.The?complaint obtained by WCAU television station alleges "the three conspired with one another to make up a false story in order to raise more than 0,000."The source told the TV station the couple has turned themselves in. CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) — An East County resident happened upon a massive surprise Friday morning.A wayward tortoise was found by the resident on Buckman Springs Rd. in Campo Friday. A San Diego County Department of Animal Serivces officer responded to the report but immediately realized he would not be able to lift the animal on his own.A Cal Fire crew arrived to help get the tortoise out of the yard, coaxing it onto a stretcher and then lifting the heavy reptile into an Animal Services vehicle.The tortoise was then taken to the department's Bonita shelter.While it's unclear how the massive animal ended up in the East County yard, Animal Services said someone called soon after the catch to report it may have been their tortoise, aptly named "Tank." (KGTV) - A North County 7th grade teacher is the SDCCU Classroom Hero for the month of June.This social studies instructor has a knack for engaging students by asking them to step into the shoes of those they're learning about."Now, when we look at America, it's a little different here right?" Joe Heath queries his social studies class at Aviara Oaks Middle School in Carlsbad.Heath has been teaching for more than 30 years, and this day has his 7th graders focused on pre-20th century Japanese culture."Most of the marriages were actually arranged," Heath explains to one student. "Your Mom or your Dad choosing your spouse. How would you feel about that?" For Coach Heath, as his students like to call him, Social Studies is about connecting and empathizing with people who lived through a different time and culture - not simply memorizing abstract names and dates. "I don't take that approach." said Heath, "In large part because I don't remember those names or those dates. I'm really good with remembering concepts and how people dealt with difficulties historically....and those same difficulties we face today.""It's not just absorbing facts where you write it down and then say it later," said student Rylan Hoffius. "It's actually talking about it and understanding the deeper meanings of it." Coach Heath's lectures are like conversations as he prompts his students to take part. The rows of ranunculus, roses, orchards, sweet pea blossoms, and petunias are set on 50 acres with an ocean view east of Interstate 5. Visitors can tour the fields for photo opportunities or take part in one of dozens of special events. The admission price includes a sweet pea maze, theme gardens, and water wise farming exhibits. Tours and wagon rides are available for an additional fee.
