EL CAJON, CA (KGTV) - Students at a private school in El Cajon are scheduled to return to class next month.Parents of children at Foothills Christian Middle School got a letter from the school over the weekend outlining their re-opening plan.According to the letter, the school will re-open September 8th.A local mom contacted 10News concerned about the plan. She didn't give her name because she doesn't want retaliation against her daughter. She was surprised at the September return date."If schools could be open, I would send her to school, if the county said we could do that, I would do that, but they're saying we can't go to school and we should be wearing masks," said the mom.According to the letter, there is a five step plan for reopening:*Regular COVID-19 self-check screening questions*Temperature readings prior to entering campus*Hand hygiene*Environmental Cleaning/Sanitization and Refillable Water Bottle Stations*Face masks/coveringsThe letter states that face coverings will not be required, but will be optional on campus. It goes on to list several reasons, including:*There is a lack of evidence that wearing a face mask prevents COVID-19 transmission in children*Children are not typically trained in their use and there is potential for increased risk of infection with improper mask use*Masks can be irritating and may lead to increased touching of face and eyes*It is impractical for a child to wear a mask properly for the duration of the school dayThe mom who contacted us says this will send mixed messages to her child."What we're telling her at home is completely different than, this is completely opposite of everything we're doing. So it's shocking to her, she's like why wouldn't I wear a mask," said the mom.The letter states wearing a mask will be the personal choice of students or faculty, but there may be some occasions where face coverings are required, like field trips."I wouldn't want her to wear a mask at school and be peer pressured not to, or be made fun of for wearing it," said the mom.As far as social distancing, the letter only states, "we will do our best to encourage physical distancing."The letter asks parents and their child to sign it, agreeing to the terms before returning to school.According to CA's governor, counties on the state's COVID-19 monitoring list cannot open schools for in-person instruction. EL CAJON, CA (KGTV) -- The Mother Goose Parade is an East County tradition dating back to 1947. But because of the pandemic, this year's parade will look a lot different. The sights and sounds will be virtual, thanks to the hard work of long-time El Cajon business owner, Patti Shryock. Besides running Cameo Janitorial and Paper Supply, she's also a true historian of the Mother Goose Parade."I've been with Mother Goose since 1985," says Shryock. "I love to see Mother Goose out there, and people come up, especially the kids, and hold her. Then you get the parents talking about their memories of the parade, and being in their child's same position. This has been going on now for 74 years."And just like the parade, her business is also a fixture in El Cajon, opening its doors back in 1963. Shryock and her brother took over full operation in the mid-1980's."My dad passed away in 1985, and my mom in 1990. However, they gave us enough background, and we worked enough in the business, where we were able to continue it on," she said.Shryock says over time a lot of hard work and great employees have created a lot of success. But now they are facing an obstacle as they have never seen before, and that would be the COVID-19 pandemic."I never saw it coming," Shryock says.Uncertain times means they've had to think outside the box"Sanitizer wipes, I started making some myself," she added.Shryock and her team at Cameo Janitorial and Paper Supply have persevered to keep the business going. The same can also be said about her effort to keep this year's Mother Goose Parade afloat. EL CAJON (KGTV and wire reports) - El Cajon police are investigating the shooting death of a man that resulted following an argument along a busy street Thursday.Police said gunfire erupted in the 1400 block of East Main Street in El Cajon shortly before 9:30 a.m., about a mile west of Granite Hills High School.Witnesses told 10News that two men were arguing on the sidewalk when one man took out a gun and shot the victim. According to police, an initial investigation indicates that an off-duty security guard tried to stop either a vehicle burglary or a carjacking. At some point, the vehicle's owner got involved, shooting and killing the suspect, police say. The shooter stayed on scene and cooperated before being arrested. EL CAJON (CNS) - A man suspected of killing his husband at their Mount Helix home pleaded not guilty Friday to a murder charge.Daniel Scott Jordan, 45, is accused in the slaying of 38-year-old Kevin Powell, a Chula Vista city employee whose body was found in the couple's Carmen Drive residence on Aug. 11.Chula Vista police found Powell's body while conducting a welfare check, sheriff's Lt. Thomas Seiver said.
