Flying to Honduras, along the border during the Nicaraguan War. These Angels of the Jungle built a hospital and treated these fragile refugees.There are angels out in force every spring at the Embarcadero Marina Park North. The Celebration of Champions honors the doctors and nurses at Rady Children's Hospital and raises the spirits of hundreds of children and their families fighting to live healthy, happy lives. Sports figures and media types running with these champions and honoring those tearfully paying homage to the ones who've passed. It's an emotional day.4th of July is a blast! Thousands descend on Scripps Ranch each year. Snow Summit was a bit colder but a fabulous time as well.Finally we remember a little Lakeside girl: an Angel in Heaven, Hero on Earth, Forever in our Hearts. Kiera Larsen was ten years old when the family SUV began rolling down the driveway toward her playmates. She ran over and pushed two younger friends to safety but was crushed to death herself. Kiera was recognized with a Carnegie Hero medal and a personal letter from then President Barack Obama. We celebrate Kiera. 2918

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seaport Village is seeing a bounce back in foot traffic now that the most stringent of coronavirus-related restrictions have eased.Port of San Diego officials say in the last month, 39,661 people came to the coastal shopping mall. That's more than double the 16,606 people that came through the center in the month after the shutdown order took effect March 13. The port took over management of Seaport Village about two years ago and invested more than million to spruce it up, create more in-person events, and add new tenants. The idea was to reverse the decline in the village, which had seen numerous closures. Ultimately, the port plans to redevelop the property with a hotel, office space, an aquarium, and a spire. "We're really just doing our best to set it up for the future, for us this is the perfect opportunity with all of the interest that we've gotten," said Lucy Contreras, a program manager in the Port's real estate division.In the last year, the Port has signed leases with Geppetto's, Spill the Beans Coffee, Mr. Moto Pizza House, Sam the Cooking Guy for a restaurant, and a Mike Hess Brewing tasting room combined with City Tacos. The duo already has a location in Imperial Beach and will take over a former restaurant spot on the center's western edge overlooking the bay. "Ever since then, and that's been like three and a half years, you tell people we're doing beer and tacos on the beach, beer and tacos on the water, nobody thinks that's a bad idea," Hess said. On Friday, the port signed a lease with the Malibu Farm restaurant for a Seaport Village location.The mall, which canceled many in-person events during the shutdown, started once again offering live music two weeks ago. It also has balcony concerts every Thursday and Saturday. While the foot traffic has increased, it is still down from pre-COVID-19 levels. From February to March 2020, the month before the pandemic hit, the port says 56,516 people came to Seaport Village. The full redevelopment is still at least five years away. 2055

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's newly renamed Museum of Us will reopen to visitors this week.The museum, formerly called the Museum of Man, will reopen on Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. under the state's new guidelines for museums during the coronavirus pandemic.The Museum of Us will operate at 25% capacity when it reopens and all guests will be required to wear a face covering. Other measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 include:Plexiglass is in place at the admission desk to minimize contact.Guests are required to keep 6 feet of distance between other visitors.Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the museum.Guests will be given a personal pencil to use throughout interactive exhibits.Guests will be provided a suggested linear path of travel to promote social distancing.Handrails and other surfaces throughout the museum are frequently sanitized for your safety.The museum is encouraging guests to also purchase their tickets ahead of time online or by using debit or credit cars. Cash will still be accepted if needed. Tickets can be purchased online for general admission or for students with school ID, military with active ID, seniors 62 and older, and youth 6-17. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego’s tourism industry is preparing for a hit with restrictions and travel advisories in place ahead of the holidays.Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in March, research shows the San Diego region has lost .6 billion in tourist money.Last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced California, Oregon, and Washington were issuing a travel advisory, asking people to self-quarantine for 14 days if they’ve traveled out of the state or out of the country.The announcement coincides with the CDC urging Americans to stay home and not travel over the holidays.Local hotel owner Bob Rausch said he believes this won’t just hurt his business, but San Diego’s tourism in general. Rausch said tourism is an important part of the city’s economy.“Even if you don’t work directly in the industry, you likely are getting the benefits of tourism,” said Rausch. “I don’t see any good news for the next six months because it’s not our peak season, there are no corporate travelers coming because of all the restrictions. And there aren’t any groups allowed in the state. And leisure travelers are being told to stay home and that was our only business.”It's grim news for business owners who are trying to keep their doors open, and economists are predicting it will take five years for San Diego’s tourism to recover. 1339
