More than a year ago, Brie Way enrolled her son at Intelli Children, both a daycare and preschool."It's not just a place. It's a home for kids," said Way.The home for more than 70 kids could soon be closing its doors."I feel sad for the children, parents and staff," said Carol Wilson, owner and director of Intelli Chidren.Ceiling stains in many of the classrooms mark the problem. Wilson says the leaky roof she noticed when she moved in eight years ago turned into big problem with this winter's rains, when several floods for them to cause of several occasions. According to Wilson, walls had to be cut out in most of the classrooms. Wilson says after the landlord declined the necessary repairs, she paid for the repairs so she could stay open. She then stopped paying rent early this year."The business was not viable anymore," said Wilson.She says negotiations stalled when her landlord declined a permanent fix and told her she had to close the school in early August. For Way, a single mom, panic is setting in. Affordable, quality child care is hard to find and she fears she'll be in the same boat she was a year ago."I called from Escondido to Oceanside, and found myself on 30 waiting lists ... It needs to stay open. There aren't a lot of good schools like this in the area. It would devastate the community I believe," said Wilson. The landlord declined comment, contending 'eight months of back rent' are still owed him. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than 40 people marched into the streets Friday, to protest rent hikes, claiming it could put them out on the streets. Residents of the Morley Street Apartments in Linda Vista received notices in February about their rent increasing in May. The rent increases range from 0 to 0. Raphael Bautista of San Diego Tenants Union calls it abusive rental practices. He says the substantial rent increase started when MC Properties bought the complex. In a letter to the tenants, they explained rent hikes are due to increased taxes and insurance fees. 10News reached out to the property group for further comment but has not heard back. “The rents are between 15 and 40 percent increases, that’s gouging,” Bautista said. He says the larger problem is that it’s legal, and that’s something the group is trying to change.” “There’s no law controlling how high rent is increased,” he said. “We're pushing for rent control at two percent.” “People are feeling frustrated because most people don’t have money to pay rent (increase). We can’t afford that,” said Romeo Martinez,who lives at the Morley Street Apartments. The San Diego Tenants Union organized the protest and march. The group marched to the management office where someone came out to listen to their demands, but took no action. The management office says they will relay the groups' complaints to the owner. “We want to make sure we peaceful resolution as soon as possible,” Bautista said. “Today’s purpose wasn't really to get a decision, but we did a turn in about 25 to 30 letters from these tenants,” Bautista said. “We want to make sure we get a peaceful resolution as soon as possible.” 1695

Yosemite National Park is investigating about 170 reports of gastrointestinal illnesses and has confirmed two cases of norovirus, officials said Thursday.The National Park Service began investigating after visitors and employees started reporting illnesses this month. Most cases occurred in early January.“We’ve had very few the last week or so,” park spokesman Scott Gediman said. “We’re hoping that we’re over the hump.”Norovirus is highly contagious and can be spread through direct contact with an infected person, touching a contaminated surface or eating or drinking contaminated food. It can cause vomiting and diarrhea and its symptoms are especially severe for elderly people, young children and people with health issues.Most of those who reported becoming sick in Yosemite had symptoms consistent with norovirus, although some might have had food poisoning or the flu, Gediman said.The origin of the outbreak was unclear. Park officials also haven’t determined whether people who became ill contracted something inside or outside of the park.Most of the people who got sick had spent time in Yosemite Valley, where park offices, visitor services, snack shops, hotels and restaurants are clustered.The park hasn’t tested food or facilities in the park for traces of norovirus, but Gediman said the park and its concession operators have been working to clean and disinfect public buildings, including the famous Ahwahnee Hotel.Aramark, which operates the hotel, received numerous complaints from visitors about poor food quality, shuttle and other services since it began managing Yosemite’s concessions four years ago.The company is working with the park to prevent future illnesses, Gediman said.“They’ve been a great partner,” he said. 1761
