SHENZHEN, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Another employee of Foxconn Technology Group jumped to death Wednesday night just hours after the company chief promised better welfare and local government appealed to young workers to cherish their lives. The latest casualty fell to his death from a dormitory building in a Shenzhen plant at around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, a witness surnamed Ye told Xinhua over the phone. The death has been confirmed by Foxconn. It was the 10th such death and 12th such fall at the plant in Shenzhen this year. Two Foxconn employees had survived their suicide attempts but sustained severe injuries. President of Foxconn Terry Gou bows for apology after a string of suicides by the company's employees at a plant of Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology Group in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, on May 26, 2010. Terry Gou said here on Wednesday that the company would prevent such tragedies from happening again. Foxconn is part of Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. and makes computers, game consoles and mobile phones for companies including Hewlett-Packard Co., Sony Corp. and Nokia Corp.Traumatized by the series of tragedies, Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou, the usually media-shy executive, flew to Shenzhen to show off his plant to around 300 Chinese and foreign reporters in order to repair the image of the manufacturing giant, which makes iPods and other popular gadgets. He promised the firm would do everything possible to prevent more deaths. Nets were put on buildings to stop people from jumping, and about 100 mental health counselors were being trained.Gou said Foxconn would also adjust salary for employees in two weeks, and fund the establishment of a hospital to provide professional therapies for employees.
PYONGYANG, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The Rodong Sinmun, a leading newspaper of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), hailed the recent successful visit to China by top leader Kim Jong Il in an editorial published Sunday. The editorial said that the people of the DPRK are "very glad and excited" about the visit. It is a "meaningful opportunity" to strengthen the friendship between the two parties and the leaders of the two countries. The article also indicated that the DPRK will make efforts to further strengthen the traditional DPRK-China friendship. Both countries shared the view that peace, stability and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula are in the common interests of the two countries and other Northeastern Asian nations, the editorial said. The two sides will make joint efforts to achieve the objective of denuclearizing the Peninsula on the basis of the Sept. 19 Joint Statement, it added. The editorial also said that the people of the DPRK sincerely wish the Chinese people still greater achievements in their socialist construction and the cause for national reunification.Kim Jong Il made an unofficial visit to China from May 3 to 7. He has visited China for five times since 2000.

BEIJING, June 1 (Xinhua) -- China has promising growth prospects and should not be blamed for world imbalances, says Danny Quah, a renowned British economist."Emergency financing that was placed in the Chinese economy to counter the downturn from the 2008 global financial crisis was the right thing...The imbalances is a global problem, not a China problem," said Quah, a professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science.China did the right thing in infusing its economy with fiscal stimulus, Quah said in a recent interview with Xinhua. He also declined to describe the ballooning real estate prices as a bubble, pointing out "the strong fundamentals" of China's economy. He said the expansion of China's housing construction will be proved useful eventually, given the fact that "China is still engaging in the task of moving hundreds of millions of people from rural areas to urban China to continue to power its manufacturing and industrial progress.""So I would not describe it as a collapse of real estate bubble, we can look forward to a rationalization of housing and real estate prices," Quah said. "The improvement and expansion of housing stock will play an important role in continuing to move the Chinese economy forward.""I think Chinese fundamentals will continue to be strong. And a little bit of high inflation, as long as it doesn't break out into some kind of runaway high inflation, is probably no bad thing," he said. "We will get it under control again as the Chinese government did previously."On allegations that China deliberately keeps its currency RMB weak to obtain unfair advantages in trade with countries like the United States, Quah said people who draw such a false conclusion are misguided."The United States is running a trade deficit not just against China. It is running a trade deficit against almost 100 other countries," he said. "China is not unique in how it is exporting more to the United States than it's importing."The U.S. government was beginning to run a large trade deficit long before China's trade surpluses started grow, he added."If you take the ratio of China's bilateral trade surplus against the U.S. as a fraction of the U.S.' overall bilateral trade deficit against all of the countries, it has remained constant over the last 15, 20 years," Quah said.
JINAN, May 3 (Xinhua) -- A pipeline owned by China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) resumed operation Monday afternoon after it leaked 240 tonnes of oil in east China's Shandong Province. The company immediately shut down the cracked pipeline and blocked the leakage site after the leakage was spotted, said a spokesman with Sinopec. It recovered 220 tonnes of oil, which had leaked to nearby farmland and roads, the spokesman said. The leakage, which was discovered at 6:12 p.m. Sunday, occurred at a section of the Dongying-Huangdao pipeline near Jiulong Township in Jiaozhou City."The influence of the leakage on the farmland could be controlled within the minimum level," he said.Testing results from the local environmental protection authorities showed the leakage didn't contaminate the nearby water sources. An initial investigation showed the pipeline crack was caused by a digger driver who unauthorizedly excavated the earth above the pipeline to bury the waste at a construction site in Jiulong Township.Police are searching for the driver, who fled after the accident.
