UNITED NATIONS, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called on the UN Security Council to quickly respond to and take actions on Israel's deadly attack against a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza."China is shocked by Israel's attack on a multinational convoy carrying international aid to Gaza which resulted in heavy casualties," said Yang Tao, a counsellor of the Chinese permanent mission to the United Nations, at the 15-nation council's emergency meeting."We condemn Israel's actions targeting humanitarian workers and civilians," he said. "We support a quick response by the Security Council and take necessary actions."Yang also expressed serious concern about the "grim" humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, especially the Gaza Strip."We urge Israel immediately and fully implement Security Council resolution 1860, fully open border crossings, lift blockade on the Gaza Strip so as to allow unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and allow local people to achieve early recovery and restore a normal life," he added.The council was currently meeting behind closed doors to discuss the text of a draft presidential statement submitted by Turkey.

XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The death toll at the flooded Wangjialing Coal Mine in north China's Shanxi Province had risen to 20 as of 8:20 p.m. Thursday while 18 miners are still unaccounted for, rescue authorities said.Three more bodies were recovered late Thursday after five were found earlier in the day.As of late Thursday, about 240,000 cubic meters of water had been pumped out, much more than the presumed 130,000 cubic meters, said Liu Dezheng, spokesman of the rescue operation, late Thursday.Seven of nine working sections had been ruled out for the existence of survivors and the targeted areas were narrowed to two sections, he said.Rescue operations were resumed after a short suspension because suspected leakage from an adjacent abandoned mine prompted flooding fears and an evacuation of the rescuers.Hundreds of rescuers evacuated when the shaft ceiling began to leak Thursday morning, said Liu Dezheng.The leakage had stopped by Thursday afternoon.Some survivors telephoned their family Thursday morning, and the family members would been organized to visit them, said Hong Yu, deputy manager of China National Coal Group Corp., who owns the flooded mine.All victims would be compensated, Hong added.A total of 261 miners were working below ground when the mine flooded on March 28. Some 108 miners escaped unharmed while 153 were trapped underground.On Monday, 115 miners were brought out of the mine alive after being trapped for more than a week.

BEIJING, April 15 (Xinhua) -- The goal of China's foreign trade policy in 2010 was to improve its trade balance while maintaining steady export growth, said the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) spokesman Thursday.The country's trade surplus was expected to shrink by another 100 billion U.S. dollars in 2010, said Yao Jian, the MOC spokesman, at a press conference.The statement came less than a week after the country posted its first monthly trade deficit for March in six years, which was valued at 7.24 billion U.S. dollars, according to the General Administration of Customs (GAC) last Saturday.The GAC said the March deficit mainly stemmed from shrinking exports of labor intensive products, surging imports volumes and rising commodity prices, and predicted the country's trade surplus might continue decrease for the rest of the year.Echoing the GAC, Yao said the country's foreign trade was likely to keep heading toward a more balanced state, while some experts predicted China's trade would soon return to surplus."The trade deficit registered in March demonstrated expanding domestic demand accompanied by lukewarm demand in the international market," Yao said."Because such a situation would continue, the monthly trade deficit seen in March would remain, at least in the first half of 2010," he said.The deficit also proved that, in an era of economic globalization, it was market supply and demand, and other factors that decided trade balance rather than exchange rates, said Yao.Yao portrayed the deficit in March as the continuation of a shrinking trade surplus that started to appear in 2008, and also as a result of the central government's macroeconomic policy in balancing the economy.In recent years, China has worked hard to restructure its economy away from excessive dependence on exports and the manufacturing sector, while a whole range of measures have been taken to expand domestic demand.The goal of China's foreign trade policy was to further balance trade while maintaining stable growth in exports, he said.Yao expected the ratio of China's trade surplus to its gross domestic product (GDP) to fall to 3 to 4 percent from last year's 5.7 percent.When an economy's ratio stays between 5 percent and minus 5 percent, its trade can be considered as more or less balanced, said Yao Jian, citing a commonly accepted standard adopted in the economics field.The conclusion coincides with another set of data provided by the GAC chief Sheng Guangzu in an exclusive interview with Xinhua on Wednesday.Sheng said the ratio of China's trade surplus to its total trade volume declined to 2.3 percent in the first quarter this year from more than 10 percent registered between 2006 and 2008."When the ratio is below 10 percent, it means the country's foreign trade can be deemed as balanced," said Sheng citing an international standard.Sheng also said that China never worked towards having a trade surplus and the country was committed to making its foreign trade more balanced.China's trade surplus would continue to shrink as a result of the country's efforts to restructure and balance its foreign trade, he said, echoing the views of Yao.

XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 9 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in the flooded Wangjialing Coal Mine in north China's Shanxi Province rose to 25 Friday after two more bodies were found and rescuers continued the search for 13 miners still missing.About 260,000 cubic meters of water had been pumped out by Friday, two times more than expected, and rescuers were focusing on two sections where the 13 were believed trapped, Liu Dezheng, spokesman of the rescue operation, told a press conference.But the rescue was difficult as the water level had not dropped quickly enough and it was adjacent to a disused shaft full of water and toxic gas, he said.Rescuers believed the disused shaft had caused the initial flood when broken into by workers.A total of 261 miners were working below ground when the mine was flooded on March 28, and 108 miners escaped unharmed while 153 were trapped underground.On Monday, 115 miners were brought out of the mine alive after being trapped for more than a week. Oh, life is good."The rescue headquarters received nearly four million yuan (586,000 U.S. dollars) in donations and "countless" materials.Li Guangfei, a 41-year-old farmer from neighboring Shaanxi Province, drove his truck for more than 20 hours with his wife to donate 10,000 yuan, about 10 percent of their annual income earned from growing potatoes and vegetables and transporting coal."I hope the money can help tired rescuers buy some milk," he said.His feeling was shared by Sun Yali, who sold pork near the mine. She brought 10 pigs to the site, hoping the rescuers could enjoy the meat after 12 days of round-the-clock work.Volunteers are also busy helping the rescue.Zhang Huajie, 29, a shop owner, has been helping out wherever he can and has donated goods worth of more than 10,000 yuan."My personal strength is weak, but I share the common mission of rescuing the trapped," he said.
