Nearly 15,000 jobs are at stake as General Motors has announced it may be closing as many as five factories.The company said it will close the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant in Detroit and Warren Transmission Operations in Warren. Other plans closing include the Oshawa Assembly Plant in Oshawa, Ontario, the Lordstown Assembly in Warren, Ohio and the Baltimore Operations in White Marsh, Maryland, WXYZ television station reports.The moves are the first big steps in the century-old GM's transformation. It is closing facilities and reinvesting money away from cars that once dominated roadways and to technology that the company believes will power its future."These actions will increase the long-term profit and cash generation potential of the company and improve resilience through the cycle," CEO Mary Barra said.GM is preparing for the next economic downturn and potential tariffs on auto imports. It will reduce its salaried workforce by 15 percent, including a quarter of the company's executives.A plant in Canada that is closing will eliminate 2,500 jobs. The Canada plant set to close as part of the global restructuring is in Oshawa, Ontario, where it has been open since 1953. MILWAUKEE -- Six cars were damaged Friday when light poles fell across traffic lanes on I-43 near Milwaukee.According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, the driver of a red pick-up truck heading northbound hit both of the light poles in the median just before 3:30 p.m. A witness at a law firm off Hampton Avenue said she saw the truck drive up onto the median and hit one pole, before continuing on to hit a second. "Unfortunately one of them kind of struck the side of the car, put a hole in the door, took a mirror out," said Jim Lovering, whose daughter called him after swerving to avoid the two poles.Lovering's 7-month-old grandson was also in the car. "Just missed the windshield, which was a blessing," said Lovering. The camera caught deputies taking away the driver of the red truck in handcuffs. Authorities have not yet released any information confirming an arrest, or possible charges. The accident caused backups for miles during rush hour, as crews worked to remove the poles from the roadway. No one in any of the cars was injured. "It was just nice that she had the space to maneuver and without hitting anybody else or causing any further damage," said Lovering. "It could be potentially you know a serious accident. Thank God it didn't happen."  1341

More than 228,000 pounds of Hormel Spam and other canned meat products are being recalled because they might contain shards of metal, according to the US Department of Agriculture.The department's Food Safety Inspection Service said Saturday that the problem was discovered after four customers complained of metal objects in canned Hormel products. The FSIS did not say how the pieces of metal might have gotten into the products.Throughout the US, 12-ounce metal cans labeled "SPAM Classic" with the designation "EST. 199N" should not be eaten because of a risk of minor oral injuries, FSIS said. The cans have a "Best By" date of February 2021 and carry the following production codes: F020881, F020882, F020883, F020884, F020885, F020886, F020887, F020888 and F020889.Possibly contaminated cans of meat were also distributed in Guam. These 12-ounce metal cans contain "Hormel Food Black-Label Luncheon Loaf." The recalled cans are marked "Best By" February 2021 and carry the production codes F02098 and F02108.The products should be immediately thrown away or returned to the place of purchase, FSIS said. In a statement, Hormel said it was recalling the products "out of an abundance of caution," and that "the health and safety of consumers is our top concern."In 2016, Hormel voluntarily recalled 40 cases of Dinty Moore Beef Stew -- also because of possible contamination by "extraneous materials."The US-based Hormel Foods Corporation sells products in more than 70 countries. 1504

Moderna says that it will file for Emergency Use Authorization for its COVID-19 vaccine candidate after a primary efficacy analysis showed it to be 94% effective in preventing the virus.In a press release on Monday, Moderna said that a primary efficacy study of its vaccine candidate showed it to be 94% effective in preventing COVID-19 infection and that no participants who received the vaccine developed a severe case of the virus.According to Moderna's press release, of the 30,000 participants who took part in a Phase 3 trial, 196 have since contracted the virus. Of those participants, only 11 had received the vaccine — the other 185 had received a placebo. Only 30 people who took part in the trial have developed a severe case of the virus, all of whom received a placebo shot.The findings are consistent with efficacy figures released by Moderna just weeks ago. Moderna is the second U.S. company to seek Emergency Use Authorization for a COVID-19 vaccine. Pfizer submitted its application earlier this month.Like Pfizer's vaccine, the Moderna vaccine requires two shots that need to be taken 28 days apart. It also needs to be stored at ultra-cold temperatures before injection.Health experts say it is encouraging that there are multiple COVID-19 vaccine candidates that are nearing authorization, as the public will be less reliant on one vaccine in the unlikely event of safety issues.Experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci have said that there is a chance that some Americans in high-risk populations could begin receiving the vaccine in the coming weeks.
