SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Civil rights activists called for change Monday following the publication of a cartoon in the San Diego Union Tribune the group described as an “insulting image”. Rev. Shane Harris, president of the People’s Alliance for Justice, and other San Diego leaders held a news conference after a meeting with UT publisher Jeff Light.San Diego Union Tribune cartoonist Steve Breen created a picture of authors James Baldwin and Toni Morrison, and actor Jussie Smollett, with the title “Famous African American Story Tellers," according to Harris' email. The image was published Friday, Harris said."It was egregious to us all," Harris said at his news conference.Smollett is accused of falsely reporting being attacked by two masked men in Chicago. He reportedly told police his attackers yelled racial and anti-gay slurs and referenced President Donald Trump's campaign slogan, according to the Associated Press.Harris demanded last week that Smollett be fired from his role in the show, "Empire."Monday, Harris said Breen apologized for the cartoon. Light also agreed to profile African-American leaders and initiatives in San Diego, Harris said. 1167

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California Highway Patrol investigators are correcting their initial findings of a fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 in February. In March, CHP said 35-year-old Justin Callahan was at fault for the fatal collision on the northbound I-5 transition ramp to westbound I-8 on Feb. 26 just before 2 a.m.Investigators had believed Callahan, driving in a Volkswagen Jetta, was traveling eastbound in the westbound I-8 lanes when he collided with a Toyota Camry on the transition ramp — a finding Callahan's family had contested.RELATED: Family disputes CHP's details of I-5 wrong-way crashCallahan died at the scene while two female occupants inside the Toyota suffered major injuries.Friday, CHP said they've now concluded the Toyota was traveling in the wrong direction when it collided with Callahan's vehicle on the ramp.Investigators also said the driver of the Toyota, 22-year-old Lauren Freeman, was found to be under the influence at the time of the crash.Freeman turned herself into San Diego Superior Court Friday. She faces charges including murder, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and felony DUI causing injury or death.RELATED: Driver killed in wrong-way crash on I-5 in Midway areaCallahan's family said following the crash he should have been heading to Ocean Beach from Chula Vista after work at the time of the crash, not away from it."It doesn't make any sense," his brother, Tommy Villafranca, told 10News in March.  "Why would he get back on the freeway and get back the opposite direction?"It takes 21 minutes just to get from his work to Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. He’s still got to turn around go back, and that would take even more time, so the timeline is not working at all."Callahan's parents, Lowell and America Callahan, sent 10News the following statement:"We are grateful for the many hours spent by the CHP investigators and especially officer Cliinkscales, who kept us informed over the last several months, concerning the investigation. Initially, Justin had been reported by CHP as the wrong way driver on I-5 north on the transition ramp to I-8 in San Diego. This took place early Monday morning at approximately 1:55 a.m. on February 26, 2018. We are pleased that his name is finally cleared in this horrible collision that took his life instantly. 2366

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Darryl McDaniels is known throughout the hip-hop world as a pioneer. But it's comic pioneers that he credits for elevating his art form. The founding member of Run DMC has grown up around comics, spending his childhood collecting, drawing, and envisioning himself in a super suit of his own. It's comics that he says taught him As a little kid, all I did was read, draw, and collect comic books. So at that time, I was this nerdy, geeky, little kid that had all this cool stuff inside of me — that the world didn't think was cool — but no way to let it out," McDaniels says.RELATED: Artist Quincy Victoria taps into Filipino passions through comic book hero 'Kawal'Comic books were McDaniels' outlet during a childhood where being teased and bullied was normalcy."My release from the traumatic existence of being teased, bullied, and picked on [were] comic books," he added.Spider-Man, in particular, was someone McDaniels could see himself as.RELATED: San Diego Star Wars cosplayers use force for charity"People always wonder, 'why does this guy continuously tell us he's from Queens?'" McDaniels says. "When I was a little kid, I'm reading Spider-Man and then I found out Peter Parker lives in Queens. Where did I live at? Queens. So you see the dynamic power, the affect that it had on me as an individual?"But Parker's antics in the pages of Marvel Comics reached McDaniels further.Another thing I saw in Peter Park that was similar with me, he was awkward. Even though he's the mighty Spider-Man he's trying to figure life out. Then I notice he's a great student, so it made me walk around the hood like, 'what? You sell drugs and I got an 'A.' What?'" McDaniels recalls. "So these guys gave me confidence."RELATED: Wonder Woman's first female illustrator shares origins story at San Diego Comic-ConThat upbringing helped tailor some of McDaniels' lyrics."I learned something from comic books that I manifested in real life. Marvel Comics taught me to defined yourself with an adjective and tell the world who you are. So for me, I'm Darryl McDaniels," he said. "The initials of my name are 'DMC.' But comic books and Stan Lee taught me when I get on the microphone, I'm no longer mild-mannered school kid Darryl McDaniels ... DMC transforms into the " Devastating, Mic Controlling' DMC."Now, not only does McDaniels' love of comics shine through his music, but literally in his own comic publisher: Darryl Makes Comics (DMC)."So we're going to educate. We're going to talk about the issues, we're going to talk about politics, we're going to talk about homophobia, we're going to talk about drugs," McDaniels says. "The arts succeeds where politics and religion fails." 2701

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Court documents are giving a glimpse into the past of the 26-year-old accused of killing his parents and sister in a Logan Heights house fire.Wilber Romero is accused of starting the fire at the home on the 3100 block of Clay Street around 4:30 a.m. October 13. 44-year-old Jose Romero died at the scene while his wife and daughter, 46-year-old Nicolasa Maya-Romero and 21-year-old Iris Romero died at the hospital in the days following the blaze. The family’s 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son were also hospitalized. Wilber is facing several charges in the fire, including first-degree murder, arson and attempted first-degree murder. Court documents show it wasn’t the first time he allegedly targeted his family. He reportedly attacked his father with a brick and rocks and damaged his car in September of 2018. The incident prompted a police standoff that ended when police shot bean bags at Wilber and released a police dog, documents show. The documents go on to state Wilber was in a car accident when he was 6-years-old and that he has suffered from a learning disability since the crash. According to the documents, Wilber also struggled with drug addiction. 1203
