SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gas & Electric warned its customers Tuesday that a new wave of scammers is targeting them and threatening to cut off their service unless they pay their utility bills immediately with prepaid cards.The most common tactic reported is scammers impersonating SDG&E's billing department and asking for payment via Green Dot MoneyPak, a way of sending cash via prepaid or bank debit cards.According to the utility, in these scams criminals typically threaten immediate power shutoffs to scare customers into making an immediate payment. Once customers purchase prepaid debit cards or make wire transfers based on the scammer's instructions, they are asked to call another phone number to provide the card information, which allows the thieves to steal the money.It can be especially confusing for victims, according to an SDG&E statement, as the phone number scammers use might play a recorded message and menu options that mimic SDG&E's official customer service line, which is 1-800- 411-7343. When victims call the number provided by scammers, they might hear a recorded message that tells them they are calling SDG&E's business line. They are given different menu options, including one to pay their bill or to report a gas leak or power outage.Utility officials say SDG&E will never:-- call a customer to proactively ask for payment information during the call. Customers may receive communications directing them to pay their bill via their MyAccount at sdge.com, use the Billmatrix system, or to call and use the automated pay-by-phone option at 1-800-411-7343-- request that a customer use pre-paid debit cards for payments or cryptocurrencies to pay their bill-- send emails with an online payment method with a QR codeIf a customer is asked for payment over the phone, it is a scam and they should hang up immediately.Utility officials say people should only provide financial information by telephone if the customer initiated the call. If asked to do so by a suspected scammer, they should hang up and call SDG&E directly to verify information about the account. Customers can also view their account status, including bills and payments, through SDG&E's mobile app or via sdge.com/myaccount."Criminals work year-round to come up with new ways to defraud people," according to a company statement. "SDG&E works hard to make sure customers know what to do if they are targeted. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council's Active Transportation and Infrastructure Committee unanimously voted Wednesday to send a set of proposed additions to the city's regulations on dockless scooters and bicycles to the full council for further consideration.The committee approved a handful of amendments to the ordinance at the behest of the mayor's office. The suggested changes include a rider curfew from midnight to 5 a.m., usage of one device per government ID, a fine structure and punitive actions for companies that violate city regulations and the elimination of the original ordinance's provision allowing for temporary fleet spikes during large events like Comic-Con.The amendments would also authorize the city to take actions like reducing a company's fleet size if it poses a public safety hazard or suspending a company outright for multiple violations and requiring the eventual use of geofencing technology to keep riders from traversing the city's sidewalks.RELATED: San Diego scooter ridership drops off dramaticallyThe council approved the original regulatory package in April after more than a year of complaints from residents about the need for oversight. The city sought to improve public safety while also keeping dockless mobility companies in the region as an affordable transportation alternative.The regulatory ordinance included limiting scooter speeds and parking in heavily trafficked areas of the city, operator permits and fees for scooter companies like Bird and Lime, documenting of scooter fleet size and data sharing requirements between scooter companies and the city.The city also introduced a webpage, sandiego.gov/bicycling/bicycle-and- scooter-sharing, giving residents the ability to view which companies operate in San Diego and contact information for each of them. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council unanimously voted Monday to amend the Mission Bay Park Master Plan to add a large fenced-in, off-leash dog park to the southwest corner of Fiesta Island. The council considered two options to update Fiesta Island's southwest section, which is partially undeveloped. The plan dubbed ``option A'' would have reserved much of the area for a smaller fenced-in, off-leash dog park while also including a launching area for non-motorized boats, a road extension through the park and a dedicated swimming beach. Option B, which the council chose to adopt, will allocate almost all of the southwest area as a fenced-in dog park with adjacent parking spaces and walking trails surrounding it. The dog park, parking and walking trails will span roughly 470 acres, according to the city. City officials developed the amendment options to the Mission Bay Park Master Plan for roughly two years. The vast majority of public speakers at the council meeting voiced their support for option B, arguing it will preserve existing habitats and serve as the only off-leash dog area in Mission Bay Park. ``I'm a strong supporter of everything we can do to keep Fiesta Island in its most natural form,'' said City Councilwoman Jennifer Campbell. ``Preservation of open space is so very, very important.'' In addition to support for the dog park, option B's supporters argued it would cost less than option A because the city would not have to make significant modifications to the area such as adding a paved road through the park. City Councilman Scott Sherman suggested the city should look into designating the South Shores boat launching area as a launching port for non- motorized boats as well in an effort to appease non-motorized boat owners. South Shores, located across the bay from the south end of Fiesta Island, is used sparingly by boat and watercraft owners and includes all of the amenities that option A would have added to Fiesta Island. City officials told Sherman they would start the process to modify South Shores' usage. ``South Shores is incredibly underutilized and we spent a whole bunch of money building that thing in the first place,'' Sherman said. ``It would be really nice to see more utilization of that spot.'' 2275
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County COVID-19 case total rose rapidly over the weekend and health authorities have reported more than 300 new COVID-19 cases seven times in the past eight days.County public health officials reported a single-day record of 497 new positive COVID-19 cases and one additional death on Sunday, bringing the county's totals to 13,334 cases and 361 fatalities.On Friday, the county reported 440 new cases, the highest number until Sunday. The day before, the county reported 436 new cases.The death reported Sunday was of a woman who was in her early 60s, officials said. The woman had one or more underlying health conditions. 664
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The ride-hailing company Lyft announced an expansion Wednesday of its pilot program at Camp Pendleton that streamlines access to the U.S. Marine Corps base for military members, their families and civilians who work at the military installation.Lyft launched the pilot program in collaboration with Marine Corps Community Services last year to make it easier for people living on the base to book a ride with a company like Lyft or Uber, which previously required security clearance to enter the base. The ``Base Mode'' feature is now integrated into the app, automatically matching base residents with eligible drivers.In addition, a new state law allows active-duty military members and their families to drive for companies like Uber or Lyft in California with a valid driver's license from any U.S. state. According to the company, military veterans make up roughly 13% of Lyft drivers in San Diego County and more than 1,000 drivers throughout the county have access to the base.``It can be costly or prohibited for military personnel to bring cars from their home state, so they rely heavily on services like Lyft to get around,'' said Lyft driver Victor Gonzalez, a member of Lyft San Diego's Driver Advisory Council.As part of the expansion, the company said it will also share revenue generated by the pilot project with the MCCS, which will use the funds to support Marine Corps recreation programs.``Marine Corps Community Services and Lyft continue to facilitate efficient and economical transportation options for the residents of Marine Corps base Camp Pendleton with this pilot program,'' Camp Pendleton spokesman Capt.
