From flooding to tornadoes, a deadly storm system blew through parts of the country over the weekend. At least eight people are dead, including three children, after severe weather slammed the south.Lily Pierce survived a tornado in Mississippi, after she took cover for three hours inside a storm shelter.“All the sudden, you’re crashing on the floor crying, praying it’s not you,” Pierce told TV station WBMA.At least 18 tornadoes hit four states. Two children died, when a tree fell on their car during a tornado outbreak in Texas.“You can't imagine that happening. I would never think of that, you know, a tree hitting a car while you're going down the road, so it was very upsetting,” said neighbor Joe Spangler. The children’s mother ran to Spangler’s house. begging for help.“She was like 'help me, help me,' so I pulled her in the house, and I saw down the road that her husband was down there, so I ran down there to see what was going on,” Spangler told TV stations KTRE. “When I got down there, I mean, I saw the size of the tree and how it was on the car. I knew it wasn't a good outcome.”More severe weather is expected this week and threatens some of the same areas hit over the weekend, as well as the East Coast. 1238

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A grandmother in Hillsborough County, Florida, is facing several charges after she caused a crash that killed her 10-month-old granddaughter, according to Florida Highway Patrol. According to an accident report, Helen Mention, 50, was drunk when she crashed into a guardrail on Friday, Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. Her blood alcohol level was .225, FHP says. That's nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08. Troopers say Mention was driving with 10-month-old Harlem Mention on her lap. She was turning from Mango Road onto westbound I-4 when she crashed into a guardrail. Harlem was taken to Tampa General with critical injuries. She died a few days later on Oct. 28, according to FHP. Mention was arrested Monday and charged with DUI manslaughter, aggravated manslaughter of a child, careless driving and a violation of Florida's child restraint law. 883

For the better part of three months, Greg Morrison has spent most of his waking moments searching for jobs. Last week, that search finally paid off for the 33-year-old TV producer, who lives in Los Angeles.Three months without a paycheck, though, hasn’t been easy.“Every time you slide your credit card to pay for groceries or write a rent check, there’s that voice in your head that knows it’s coming out of your savings,” Morrison said.As COVID-19 swept across the country earlier this year, it all but ceased production of most television shows in L.A. For Morrison, the realization came fairly quickly that this stretch of unemployment would last much longer than the typical few weeks he has between some jobs. He’s been surviving on the extra 0 that the federal government has added to unemployment benefits as part of the CARES Act, but even that has been hard to come by.“They are seven weeks behind on my unemployment payments,” he said. “I can’t get anyone on the phone. They say they’ve setup another line, but I can’t reach anyone.”But even with all the troubles he’s facing getting unemployment benefits, prospects are looking better for Morrison and some Americans who have found themselves out of work because of the virus, especially as some states begin easing their stay-at-home restrictions.“It’s a lot more promising than it was a few weeks ago,” said Morrison, who just accepted a new producing job that starts in June.Although he’s hesitant given the current situation with the pandemic, he’s also hopeful.“I’m happy to be one of the lucky ones right now,” he added. As for economists, many still believe recovering from the pandemic will not be like flipping a light switch back on.“It’ll be five years before a full recovery,” said David Parsley, who teaches economics at Vanderbilt University. But Parsley says jobs will slowly begin to return as more states open for business.“There’s always opportunities, but these opportunities will be for people who are skilled; people who are trained,” he said. 2039

FLINT, Mich. – The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to take a case stemming from the 2014 water crisis in Flint, Michigan. As a result of the court’s decision, residents will be allowed to pursue a civil rights lawsuit against the city and government officials who are accused of knowingly allowing their water supply to become contaminated with lead, 363
