BEIJING, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his British counterpart Gordon Brown on Wednesday held a telephone conversation on bilateral ties and other issues of common concern.     Wen said China-Britain ties are currently developing smoothly, and the two sides have conducted close communication and coordination on tackling the global financial crisis and climate change, and have played positive and constructive roles in the international arena.     He said China is willing to keep high-level exchanges with Britain, strengthen bilateral cooperation, push forward bilateral ties, and make joint efforts with Britain to make a contribution to the world's sustainable development.     Brown said Britain attaches great importance to the development of its comprehensive strategic partnership with China, appreciates the Chinese government's firm resolution and vigorous measures adopted in handling of the global financial crisis, supports China's important role in tackling climate change, and hopes to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with China in various fields.     The two leaders also exchanged views on other international issues of common concern

URUMQI, July 8 (Xinhua) -- More than 100 overseas media organizations came to Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to report Sunday's riot, a press official said Wednesday.     "All media organizations are welcome to report the riot," said Hou Hanmin, spokeswoman for the Xinjiang regional government and in charge of the press center in Haide Hotel in downtown Urumqi.     "We will do our best to provide convenience for reporters while ensuring their safety," said Hou.     "We hope every media reports the incident objectively through close observation of the truth," she said.     The riot, which occurred Sunday evening in Urumqi, has left 156dead and more than 1,000 others injured.     Wu Nong, a press center worker, said the center had technicians to deal with communication problems for journalists. It has interpreters of English and Uygur languages.

BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- China and Portugal agreed here Wednesday to enhance friendly exchanges and cooperation.     Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin met with Portuguese parliament speaker Jaime Gama on Wednesday.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, spoke highly of China-Portugal relations and noted that China always conducted its ties with Portugal from a strategic, long-term perspective and is ready to advance their comprehensive strategic partnership. BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday honored dozens of military organizations and individuals for their contribution to the nation's quake relief or scientific research work.     President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission Hu Jintao signed a decree awarding merits to 15 organizations and 28 individuals with the People's Liberation Army (PLA).     Three classes of merits were meted out in accordance with the receivers' contribution.     Ten units and individuals were cited for their relief efforts after the 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern China on May 12 last year, two for "remarkable troop building," five for "achievements in major scientific experiments," two for artist creations and the rest for achievements in scientific researches, according to the decree.     In a separate decree signed by Hu, four other soldiers and officers were awarded honorable titles as being "model examples" for their peers.     One of them, Meng Xiangbin, was given the honor posthumously as he was drowned while trying to save a suicidal woman from a river in eastern Zhejiang Province in 2007.

SHANGHAI, July 17 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said in Shanghai Friday that he expected cooperation between China and the United Stated in the fields of clean energy technology and carbon emission elimination would benefit both countries in the campaign against climate change.  "I believe there is great opportunity for greater cooperation between United States and China," said Locke, a Chinese American, in his speech at a welcome ceremony jointly hosted by American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and the US-China Business Council.     His audience included dozens of Chinese businessmen from across the country and representatives of international corporations with branches in Shanghai.     "I want China and the United States to lead the world and save the planet from irreversible climate change.
