TAIPEI, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- A televised debate among three candidates for the upcoming election of Taiwan leader was held Saturday in Taipei, with cross-Strait issues highlighted in the first face-to-face debate before the Jan. 14 election.The candidates - Ma Ying-jeou, chairman of Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party, Tsai Ing-wen who represents the island's major opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), and People First Party (PFP) chairman James Soong - stated their political views respectively and debated with each other.Both Ma and Soong stressed the adherence to the 1992 Consensus in order to maintain peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.In November 1992, the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation reached the consensus that each of the two organizations verbally acknowledges that "both sides of the Taiwan Straits adhere to the one-China principle."Ma said the 1992 Consensus was "the best way" for the two sides to settle disputes and achieve win-win situation."If the 1992 Consensus was not adhered to, cross-Strait relations will be thrown to an uncertain state, or even regress," Ma said.While acknowledging achievement of cross-Strait relations since 2005 such as the signing of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) across the Strait, Soong called for seeking "common benefits for all" with cross-Strait peaceful development as the precondition.However, Tsai continued to deny the 1992 Consensus and said that a "Taiwan consensus" should be made before negotiating with the Chinese mainland.The three candidates also expressed own views on judicial reform, finance and issues concerning people's livelihood.The televised debate was held by the Taiwan Public Television Service and other local media.Two more debates will be held on Dec. 10 and Dec. 17.

HAIKOU, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China will actively push forward maritime cooperation with the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in light of the guidelines on conduct in the South China Sea, a Foreign Ministry official has said.Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin made the remarks during an international seminar on implementing the Declaration on Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) and maintaining the navigational freedom and security of the waterway.Early next year, China will hold a senior officials' meeting and working group meeting with ASEAN countries on the implementation of the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), Liu said in an interview with Xinhua on the sideliens of the seminar held in Haikou, Hainan Province, from Dec. 14-15..The senior officials' meeting is a guiding mechanism for implementing the DOC at governmental level. MANILA, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- No Chinese national has so far been found dead in the flashfloods triggered by tropical storm Washi ( local name Sendong), a Chinese embassy official said on Sunday.When asked on possible casualties of Chinese nationals, an offical with the Cebu Consulate said they just contacted with relevant persons in disaster affected areas, and there is no report on the casualties of Chinese citizens. Given the serious risks facing the global economy and continued market volatility, ensuring growth and promoting stability should be the top priority, he said."We should introduce new and strong measures to ensure that fiscal and monetary policies are fully implemented and that funding is channeled into the real economy to boost production and employment."Second, the G20 nations should strengthen unity and send a strong signal to the world as there is widespread panic and acute lack of confidence in the markets, said Hu.He urged G20 members to strengthen consultation and coordination, tackle sovereign debt risks, regulate cross-border capital flow, put the fluctuation of commodity prices under control, mitigate global inflationary pressure and make sure that the economic policies pursued by various countries do not offset each other.Third, global economic governance should be improved through reform, Hu said.The international financial crisis has highlighted the deficiencies in the global economic governance system, said Hu."Major efforts should be made to reform and improve the international monetary system, international trading system and commodity pricing mechanism," said the Chinese president.
