It doesn't travel that well," Engman said Tuesday.Sales are down more than 90 percent and 450 employees were just furloughed amid the lockdown."It's heartbreaking, but what makes it even worse is that we're in the holiday season," Engman said.But instead of simply giving up and hoping for another round of stimulus, Engman is keeping a couple extra workers on at Breakfast Republic's Mission Valley location - preparing what could turn into hundreds of free meals everyday for impacted workers or anyone in need - no questions asked."I mean, we're hemorrhaging money, but I think when the going gets tough, that's when you need to show character," Engman said.Two years ago, Rise and Shine Restaurants created a nonprofit that got a dollar for every sold breakfast burritos, one of the most popular items. That money has, for instance, been used to make thousand-dollar donations to other nonprofits nominated by customers.And during the march lockdown, the nonprofit bought ,000 worth of meals for the public - about 6,400, and it has about that much cash left this time."We have a little chunk of money there that we want to put to good use," Engman said.And while breakfast is in the name - it's not breakfast being served for free. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 16-year-old boy suspected of stealing a vehicle and leading police in San Diego on a short pursuit was hospitalized Monday evening with a broken hip after being ejected or jumping from the vehicle and being run over before the Jeep struck a traffic signal pole.Officers received information about a 2019 Jeep Compass stolen from the 3800 block of Fairmount Avenue about 7:20 p.m. and spotted the vehicle speeding and attempted to stop it near 54th Street and University Avenue, according to Officer John Buttle of the San Diego Police Department.The driver fled southbound on 54th Street and ran red lights, prompting the pursuit to be terminated, Buttle said.The suspect continued southbound on 54th Street, crossed into the northbound lanes and crashed in the Chollas Creek area into a traffic signal, where he was either ejected or tried to get out of the Jeep before it stopped and was run over, pinning his arm under a tire, Buttle said.Firefighters freed the suspect from under the Jeep and he was taken to a hospital with a fractured hip.Two 16-year-old girls in the Jeep were taken to a hospital to be evaluated, Buttle said. 1161

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A DUI/Driver's License checkpoint in the Mission Bay area of San Diego resulted in 11 arrests, police said Saturday morning.More than 660 vehicles went through the checkpoint at 2600 Ingraham St., between 11:20 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday and nearly 600 of those vehicles were screened, according to Officer Mark McCullough of the San Diego Police Department.Of the vehicles screened, 18 drivers were evaluated and 11 were arrested on suspicion of DUI in or near the checkpoint, including one driver who was taken into custody after he failed to stop for the checkpoint and crashed his vehicle, McCullough said.Police also cited seven drivers for unspecified violations and impounded nine vehicles.Another checkpoint is scheduled for Saturday, but the time and location were not immediately disclosed. 836

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A City Council committee Wednesday unanimously directed the City Attorney's office to draft an emergency declaration over a lack of shelter space, which has exacerbated a deadly outbreak of hepatitis A among San Diego's homeless population.A declaration regarding shelters is already in place. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 64-year-old taco truck owner was robbed at gunpoint Friday evening in the Linda Vista neighborhood.The victim was cleaning his truck at 6800 Linda Vista Rd. about 8:30 p.m. when the suspect walked up and demanded money, according to San Diego Police Department Officer Robert Heims.As the victim turned around, he saw the suspect pointing a gun at him and the suspect again demanded money, Heims said.The victim gave up an unknown amount of cash and the suspect ran off, last seen southbound in the 6800 block of Linda Vista Road, Heims said.The suspect was described as a 20-year-old Hispanic man, 5 feet 9 inches tall with a thin build, wearing blue jeans and a gray hoodie with a gray bandana around his face, Heims said.Anyone with information was asked to call San Diego Police Robbery Division detectives at 619-531-2299 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 889
