Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has signed a landmark bill that retires the last state flag bearing the Confederate battle emblem. The Republican governor signed the bill Tuesday afternoon, just two days after legislators passed it. Amid international protests over racial injustice, Mississippi was under increasing pressure to lose a symbol that many see as racist. The state had used the flag since 1894. Mississippi will not have a flag for a while. A commission will design a new one that cannot have the Confederate symbol and must have the phrase, “In God We Trust.” Voters will be asked to approve the new design.The Confederate battle flag is losing its place of official prominence in the South 155 years after the end of the Civil War. Mississippi’s Republican-controlled Legislature voted Sunday to remove the Confederate emblem from the state flag. Other states took action previously. NASCAR, meanwhile, has banned the rebel banner from its car races. The flag with the familiar X design is still visible along Southern highways and in some stores. NASA announced Monday that two new studies show that there may be more water on the moon than previously thought.In a press conference, NASA said that two studies published in the journal Nature Astronomy said that data gathered by a lunar orbiter and an airborne telescope detected the presence of molecular water molecules on the sunlit surface of the moon.Previously, NASA speculated that most of the water on the moon was located on the shadowy surface that is not lit by the sun.The study opens the possibility of using that water as a resource, allowing for longer missions on the moon's surface that would require astronauts to live there for extended periods of time. 683

MOHEGAN LAKE, N.Y. — Angelina Friedman, a 102-year-old nursing home resident, recently survived her second bout with COVID-19, according to her daughter Joanne Merola."Not only has she beaten COVID at 101, she's beaten it at 102," Merola said.Friedman also has the unique distinction of living through two global pandemics.During the 1918 pandemic, Angelina Sciales was born on a passenger ship taking immigrants from Italy to New York City."She was born on a ship coming from Italy during the Spanish flu," Merola said earlier this year. "Her birthday was Oct. 18, 1918."Angelina's mother died giving birth on the ship."She was helped by her two sisters," Merola said of her mother.When Angelina's father reunited with his daughters in New York, he took them to live in Brooklyn."She was one of 11 children," Merola said. "She's the last one surviving."Angelina eventually married a man named Harold Friedman. The couple battled cancer later in life, but only Angelina overcame the disease.She's lost most of her hearing and her vision is bad, but she's retained her zest for life.Friedman, a resident of the North Westchester Restorative Therapy and Nursing Center, battled COVID-19 most recently in October, according to her daughter.Her first bout with the virus happened in March when she was taken to the hospital for a minor medical procedure.When she initially tested positive for COVID-19, the procedure was postponed and Friedman spent a week in the hospital. She then returned to the nursing home and was isolated in her room.After running a fever on and off for several weeks, Friedman finally tested negative for coronavirus on April 20.At the time, Friedman's daughter received a late-night phone call from nurses. They said Friedman was doing great, that she was eating again and looking for yarn for crocheting."My mother is a survivor," Merola said in April. "She survived miscarriages, internal bleeding and cancer."Six months after that first COVID-19 diagnosis, Friedman's daughter said she received a call from the nursing home in late October, "to tell me she tested positive again.""She had symptoms — fever, a dry cough," Merola said. "...they gave her a bunch of meds. They thought she might also have the flu."More staff and residents at the nursing home were getting sick, according to Merola, so the older residents were put in isolation.Merola said she got daily updates on the situation, and on Nov. 17 she received great news."My invincible mother tested negative," she said.After another test came back negative, Friedman was moved out of isolation and back into her regular room.Merola said she attributes her mother's survival to "an iron will to live.""She's not the oldest to survive COVID, but she may be the oldest to survive it twice," she said.This story was originally published by Mary Murphy on WPIX in New York City. 2868

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — With coronavirus cases still surging in the United States, Google has reportedly pushed back the timeline for when its employees will return to their offices.The New York Times and NBC News both report Google is planning to return to in-person working in September 2021, instead of July.That’s according memo sent to staff Sunday, which also said the company would be testing the idea of a “flexible work week” once workers do return to offices.Under the pilot plan, The Times says employees would be asked to work at least three days in their offices for “collaboration days,” and work the other days at home.The CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, wrote in the memo that they want to test the hypothesis that flexible work models lead to greater productivity, collaboration, and well-being.Google isn’t alone in testing these kinds of work schedules. Other tech companies like Microsoft, Facebook, and Twitter have expressed interest or released plans for rolling out similar models.Another aspect of getting people back to work will be COVID-19 vaccines. However, it’s still not known whether Google and other large companies like it will require its employees to be vaccinated before returning to their offices.Though, a spokeswoman told The Times that Google has said it recommends that employees obtain a vaccine when it’s available to them and that it may help facilitate vaccinations once the most vulnerable have been inoculated. 1490
