SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Many Americans say cell phone are their lifelines. But what happens when yours breaks? Whether for convenience or for price, third-party repair shops are the choice for many customers. Unfortunately, some Apple users with the latest phones say they're not able to go to third-party shops. Four years ago, Christopher McQueen said he found the perfect niche business. “People are always breaking their phones, late at night,” McQueen said.He is the owner of Mobile Cell Doctors. He will come to you and fix your phone.“To be able to fix your phone in 10 minutes, versus a 3-hour fiasco at Apple, it was a need that was definitely there,” McQueen said. He said he can fix any hardware problems, except on the most recent iPhone models - iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X.Just recently, iPhone 8 user Lucas Peckham went to McQueen to get his broken screen replaced. His choices were 0 with McQueen or 9 at the Apple Store. He chose the cheaper, more convenient option.Peckham said everything was flawless until one morning, he woke up to a phone with a frozen screen. He could not swipe, touch, type, or do anything with his device. Peckham said it happened after his phone automatically updated overnight, installing the Apple 11.3 Software.McQueen said he was suddenly inundated with calls from all of his previous iPhone 8 customers. “It’s been a nightmare,” McQueen said. He said he had fixed about 100 iPhone 8’s in the last six months. He suggested to his customers, to do what they hoped to avoid by going to him in the first place - go to the Apple Store. But Peckham said, when he showed Apple the problem, he was told, because he previously used a third-party repairman, they could not repair it. Instead, he had to replace it with a brand new screen for 0 - or buy a whole new phone. “I totally felt screwed,” Peckham said. With no other option, Peckham said he gave in, spending six hours at the Apple Store, and paying up the 0. “It was basically a way for Apple to create kind of a monopoly on the iPhone screen,” Peckham said. Last month, California became the 18th state to introduce a “Right to Repair” Bill, which would require electronics manufacturers to make repair information and parts available to owners and third-party repair shops.McQueen hopes this legislation passes, so mom-and-pop business owners like him also get to have a piece of the pie. “I would love to fix those,” McQueen said. “But until they release the software to run the phones that would allow third-parties to work on those devices, we can’t fix them.”10News spoke to Apple, who said they do work with Authorized third-party dealers that are not Apple Stores. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Realtors say all the signs point to a busy spring and summer in San Diego."It's heating up a little bit," says Markus Feldmann, with the Pacific Real Estate Center. "We see a very active market again."Home prices have come down from their record peak in August of 2018. That month, CoreLogic reported that San Diego's median home price was 3,000. In December, it had dropped to 0,000 (see chart above). According to their numbers, homes in San Diego sold for ,000 more in that period than other times of the year. Zillow also says homes are on the market for six fewer days in early May.No matter which side of the sale you're on, Feldmann says there are simple ways you can make sure you get the most for your money.If you're a buyer, he says you don't have to keep increasing your offer. Feldmann says you can increase your deposit. "This way a seller is going to see who is the buyer and they may have a preference. They may prefer a family or a couple over an investor. He also says there are some simple ways to spruce up the house that will make it more attractive without costing too much money."Be aware of clutter and maybe move some furniture out of the house to make the rooms look bigger," he suggests. "Put a little investment into the front yard. Put some color in, put some flowers in, maybe use some bark to delineate the flower beds. Just improve on the general appeal of the house. Those small things can have a big payout."Feldmann says it's also crucial that sellers stay patient after they list a home."Let the property sit on the MLS for a few days, don't just accept the first offer that comes," he says. "Let it breathe like a good glass of wine. (KFTV) - Former NFL player Steve Weatherford is putting his best foot forward to help Feeding San Diego this holiday season.The Super Bowl Champion Punter donated more than ,000 to help fund a school pantry for a full month."I feel like it's an honor and a privilege to team up with Feeding San Diego and leverage my blessings to let them know we have some food for you and we also care," he said as Weatherford helped distribute food at Central Elementary on December 20th.Feeding San Diego's school pantry program runs distributions at 40 schools across the city. They focus on giving families fresh food, as opposed to processed packaged items.Weatherford says that's one of the reasons he was drawn to the program."Being in fitness and being a professional athlete, I understand you're only going to be able to perform as well as the fuel you put inside your body," he says.Weatherford also brought his daughters, Carney and Aurora, to help volunteer at the distribution."I've got five kids," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Monday morning Escondido Police provided extra police patrols at a local mosque that was targeted on Sunday.Police say the Dar-ul-Arqam Mosque on 6th Avenue was set on fire by an arsonist that has yet to be identified.Worshipers inside the mosque noticed the flames around 3 a.m. on Sunday and were able to put them out before the fire could spread.Lt. Chris Lick with the Escondido Police Department said once police and arson investigators arrived, they determined that the fire was set intentionally. They also found a note left by the suspect.“Graffiti left behind by the suspect made reference to the shooting incident in New Zealand,” said Lt. Lick.The San Diego Police Department has also stepped up patrols at mosques across the city in response the incident in Escondido.San Diego's Anti-Defamation League issued a statement in support of the mosque and worshippers.“This attack appears to be meant to send a signal to the Muslim community” said ADL Regional Director Tammy Gillies. “Sadly, this type of behavior is consistent with the growth in hate crimes, rise in attacks on Muslims, and the surge in anti-Muslim bigotry that we have seen in our country and around the world.”A crowdfunding campaign was launched to help raise money to provide repairs and proper security at the mosque in Escondido.The campaign has received support from people across the country. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV): Drug enforcement experts in San Diego are warning about a new, deadlier opioid on the streets - Carfentanil."You've got Fentanyl, which is 50 times stronger than heroin. And then Carfentanil, which is 100 times stronger than Fentanyl," explains DEA Special Agent in Charge Colin Ruane.Carfentanil was originally created to be used as a tranquilizer on large zoo animals, like elephants. The FDA initially restricted it's manufacture to just 28 grams per year in the US.According to FDA Spokesperson Lindsay Haake, "The sponsor of Wildnil, a form of Carfentanil, voluntarily relinquished the approval for this potent analog of Fentanyl in March 2018, as it hadn’t been marketed in at least five years, and because the sponsor wanted to avoid any potential public health effects associated with diversion of the drug if marketed in the future."It only takes .02 mg of Carfentanil to cause a deadly overdose in humans. That's about the same size as a couple grains of salt."The fact that it's as potent and deadly as it is, and we don't know when it's going to show up or where it's going to show up is of most concern," Ruane adds.There are currently two cases involving Carfentanil working their way through Federal Court in San Diego. In one, a dealer was caught with 1.77 grams of the drug. In another case, search warrants related to overdose deaths in 2017 led to 20 people charged on 3 separate indictments.So far, only 3 people in San Diego have died from Carfentanil, all in 2017. But the DEA is still sounding the alarm."It's extremely dangerous to the public and that's what we want to get out there," says Ruane.He says drug makers are mixing Carfentanil in counterfeit pills. The fact that just a small quantity will produce a major effect makes it more profitable. Drug manufacturers are including it in pills they try to pass off as Oxycontin or Xanax.Experts say taking a pill like that is the same as playing Russian Roulette."If you're at a pill party and people are distributing pills, you have no idea what's inside," says Assistant US Attorney Sherri Hobson. "Why would you take something when you have no idea what's inside?"Ruane says that most of the illegal pills are made in back rooms, bathrooms, warehouses or other labs with no quality control. That makes them more dangerous because there's no consistency between what's in each pill."You could have two people, they take the same kind of pill from the same batch, and one person is fine while the other one dies," he says.He says the safest thing to do is avoid any pills when you don't know their source."If you're not under treatment from a doctor and you haven't gotten the pill from a legitimate pharmacy, don't take it. You don't know what you're taking." 2773
