SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State announced it is withdrawing from bowl consideration to give its football players the opportunity to spend time with their parents during the Christmas break. The decision ends the Aztecs' streak of playing in a bowl game for 10 consecutive seasons, which equaled the nation's 11th-longest active streak. With a 4-4 record and 11 bowls canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic it was unlikely San Diego State would receive a bowl invitation. They were not among the teams projected to play in a bowl in projections released Sunday by Jerry Palm of CBS Sports."Our guys have really been through a lot, I think more than any of us could imagine," coach Brady Hoke said Wednesday, following the Aztecs' final practice of 2020. "They get to play a game they love, but with the uncertainty of being able to play in a bowl game we have made the decision that we will not play another game this season."I cannot tell you how proud I am of this team with what they have been through and the commitment they showed to one another. Many of them have not seen their parents since May and we want them to have an opportunity to go home." 1168

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Reversing a vote from last week, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors Monday approved four satellite voting offices ahead of the March primary election, over the fierce objections of one member. The vote was 3-1. Supervisors Greg Cox, Nathan Fletcher and Dianne Jacob were in favor, while Supervisor Jim Desmond was opposed. Supervisor Kristin Gaspar left the chamber before the board voted, after saying she was ``being asked to revisit a vote that we have already made, to overturn the will of this board.'' She also said that this morning's special meeting was planned by three members of the board, and that neither she nor Desmond were asked to attend. Jacob, who chairs the board and requested the special meeting, did not offer a formal response to Gaspar's allegation. The satellite voting office proposal stemmed in part from state legislation, recently signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, that allows Californians to register to vote on election day at local polling places and voting centers. The cost of the four satellite offices was estimated at nearly million: 0,000 for salaries and benefits, and 0,000 for services and supplies. According to county documents, federal and state monies will provide a partial reimbursement. Before today's vote, Jacob said the county will pursue reimbursement from state for 5,000 costs. She added that the county has recovered 4 million in unfunded state mandates in the past. ``Merits of this proposal should not be judged by the funding source,'' Jacob said. ``It should be judged by our obligation to follow the law.'' 1610

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Airport Authority announced Monday that the Pacific Highway Economy parking lot will permanently close to the public the day after Christmas. The lot will be converted into employee parking, according to airport officials. The need for a new employee lot was brought on by construction of a new stormwater infiltration system at the south side of the runway, where employees currently park. The new system is part of the airport's Stormwater Management Plan to control and reduce pollution caused by the airport's day-to-day operations.Airport travelers will still be able to use the parking lots at both terminals, the Terminal 2 parking plaza and the airport's long-term parking lot. With the loss of the economy lot, the airport will have a parking capacity of 8,300 vehicles between the four lots.Travelers can find more information about parking at the San Diego International Airport at san.org/parking. Travelers can also make advanced reservations for parking spaces at reservations.san.org. 1038

"They are a team of talented, dedicated and experienced public servants who will help me lead our city, especially through COVID-19 and get us back on track. I want to thank them for their willingness to step up and serve the people of San Diego."Avila was named Chief of Staff. Avila is a graduate of the University of California San Diego and lives in Bay Park.Serrano was named deputy chief of staff. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Loyal SC announced today it will forfeit the point it received from its 1-1 tie with LA Galaxy II because of a racial slur directed at a Black SD Loyal player.LA Galaxy II defender Omar Ontiveros used the slur in the 71st minute of Wednesday's 1-1 tie at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, according to USL Championship, which suspended Ontiveros Friday for six games.Multiple officials, LA Galaxy II coaching staff and players were in the area, several of whom later acknowledged hearing the exchange, according to SD Loyal.Ontiveros was not disciplined by LA Galaxy II coaching staff or referees. SD Loyal coaching staff did not hear about the incident until the game was over.None of the facts in the investigation of the incident were disputed by any of the involved parties, according to the league.SD Loyal players believe they should have walked off the field to protest the lack of discipline, according to the team. ``We don't even want to recognize being a part of a match where these types of actions take place,'' said SD Loyal Chairman Andrew Vassiliadis. ``The Loyal in our name is symbolic of the diversity in our community and as a club we will not stand for this.''SD Loyal's statement did not include the name of the player the slur was directed, but did say the Galaxy scored the tying goal after he was sent off for a second yellow card.Midfielder Elijah Martin was the only SD Loyal player to receive two yellow cards Wednesday. With SD Loyal shorthanded because of Martin's ejection -- a team may not replace an ejected player -- Alejandro Alvarado Jr. scored the tying goal one minute into stoppage time.Forfeiting the point from the tie could jeopardize SD Loyal's chances of reaching the playoffs in the Division II men's soccer league. The top two teams in each of the league's eight groups qualify for the playoffs. The tie gave SD Loyal 23 points on a 6-4-5 record, one more than Galaxy II (7-5-1) and two ahead of Orange County SC (6-4-3) in the race for second place in Group B.SD Loyal has one game remaining the regular season, Galaxy II and Orange County SC three each.Ontiveros received a red card in the eighth minute of stoppage time, resulting in an automatic one-game suspension. It will be added to the six-game suspension he received from the league. The suspension will begin with Saturday's game against Las Vegas Lights FC and will include the remaining two games of the Galaxy II's regular season and any postseason games.Should any games remain on the suspension, they would be applied to the start of the 2021 USL Championship season.Ontiveros could receive additional punishment from Galaxy II, the reserves team of the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer. 2745
