SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Carlos family hit hard by the pandemic is picking up the pieces after a fire gutted their home.Raegan Gaedke's brother shot cellphone video of smoke pouring out of their home on Verlane Drive on Sunday evening. Minutes before, Raegan, 16, and her brother Ryley, 17, had returned home from a grocery run, before discovering smoke in their parents' bedroom."Ran and got my dog out. My brother turned off the power and got the fire extinguisher, but it was too late. The fire spread too much," said Gaedke.Their mom Cyndi, who was visiting relatives, says fire crews later told them the cause was a window air conditioner. The home they had been renting for the last 12 years is a total loss."So hard for me to comprehend we have nothing. It's all gone," said Cyndi.Cyndi says they did not have renters insurance. It's a purchase set to the side."You think you'll get back to it, and you don't. Won't make that mistake again. It's hard to describe how stressful this has been," said Cyndi.The stress levels already high since the start of the pandemic. Cyndi's husband, the breadwinner of the family and a commercial fisherman, has been out of work. His job counted on now-grounded international flights for shipping. The amount of money they family is receiving from unemployment is modest. Paying the rent had become a concern."We did have quite a bit of savings, but that's all gone. it's been tough and awful. My husband has had a lot of anxiety, as well as me," said Cyndi.Right now, family members are staying with relatives. A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the family. 1617

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local father is just a few days away from reuniting with his family who is in federal quarantine in Northern California at Travis Air Force Base. Ken Burnett's wife and two young children were visiting Wuhan, China when the coronavirous broke out. The city shut down and the three were stranded, unable to fly home. Their 14-day federal quarantine ends on Tuesday. Burnett plans on traveling to Northern California to reunite with his wife and kids so they can all travel back to San Diego together. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A nurse who works for the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility tested positive for coronavirus Wednesday, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department says. According to the department, the nurse has been isolated at home. No other information was provided about the individual's condition at this time. The department says it has identified inmates and staff who may have come into close contact with the nurse. A total of nine employees are considered at low exposure risk. We have been providing comprehensive education to staff on how to reduce chances of exposure and infection. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local casting director making it big in Hollywood after signing stars for a movie hitting theaters Friday.The movie, The Last Full Measure, is based on soldier William H. Pitsenbarger, Jr. who rescued more than 60 men during the Vietnam War. Casting Director Iris Hampton fell in love with the script the first time she read it, "I couldn't put it down, it was so beautiful." She was born and raised in San Diego in a military family and married a Marine Veteran, bringing the plot close to home.Hampton got into the business during a vacation to Hawaii. She said she went to the Magnum P.I. office and asked if they needed any help, "they said not right now, but why don't you come back in three months? So I came home, packed my bags and I went."Since then she's worked with big names like Chuck Norris and the Power Rangers. "I am going on my 28th and 29th season of that show," she said referring to the Power Rangers.Seven years ago she signed on to The Last Full Measure. The movie follows Pitsenbarger, Jr. during Operation Abilene in the Vietnam War. He descended from a helicopter while troops were under fire and rescued as many as he could, before he was killed.The film then follows the men who worked for decades to get Pitsenbarger, Jr. the Medal of Honor. "It ended up being 32 years they fought for him to get the medal of honor," she said."Pitts was a hero and a legend," Hampton said paratroopers idolize him.With a deep love and respect for the military, Hampton said this project is the pinnacle of her career.She signed stars like Samuel L. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A nurse who pleaded guilty in the brutal death of her boyfriend's baby has been granted parole."Angry, angry," said Deanna Stanley, the grandmother of 7-month-old Nicole Alegado.Stanley spoke to 10News after attending a state parole board hearing Thursday and learning the woman who killed her granddaughter was granted parole.Back in 2008, in order to avoid a trial, the baby's family supported a plea deal. "Emotionally we couldn't handle it," said Stanley.Eileen Villamajor, a nurse living in National City, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the killing her boyfriend's daughter, saying she was frustrated by her cries. She was sentenced to 15 years to life."Eileen picked her up by the hair and threw her to the ground twice. Nicole remained crying. Eileen held her head in her hands until she heard it crack, at which time Nicole stopped crying," said Stanley.Stanley sat through those unbearable details at Villamayor's parole hearing in Corona. She listened to Villamayor's petition, including her good behavior in prison and completion of classes to control her emotions. Stanley is still convinced Villamayor is dangerous."For someone to do something that something horrific with their hands ... I don't know if you can cure that in a class," said Stanley.Stanely says Villamayor showed no remorse during the hearing but revealed something new about the motive, which involved about Nicole taking up her father's time."She said she hated Nicole, resented Nicole. To me that shows premeditation. If we had gone to trial, I think she would have been convicted of first-degree murder," said Stanley.In the end, the parole board deciding to grant Villamayor parole. She could serve 13 years and 7 months of a sentence of 15 years to life. Proposition 57 passed in 2016 allows her to accrue good behavior credits which can reduce a life sentence."There is no justice here," said Stanley.The earliest Villamayor can be released is March 2020. The family has 120 days to appeal to the governor's office to overturn the decision, which they plan to do. The District Attorney's office, which backed the family at the hearing, says they will likely write a letter urging the governor to overturn the parole decision. 2250
