AURORA, Colo. — Detainees at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detention Center are conducting a hunger strike in response to repeated infectious disease quarantines.This week, more than 200 detainees in the Aurora Contract Detention Facility are under quarantine, meaning they cannot visit with family, attend court hearings or leave their respective detention pods.Concern is growing for the families of the detainees, as some 65 have been under a mumps quarantine for two months and have just been told that quarantine will now start over again and will last another 21 days.Priscilla Cruz-Moreno’s husband Henry is one of the 65 heading into another quarantine. “We are going on two months now. It's inhumane," she said.“He's in pod B4,” she said. “The pod decided to strike, which means they are not going to be eating food."Priscilla says her husband's pod inside the ICE detention facility has now been placed a quarantine for mumps and chicken pox for the third consecutive time — more than 60 straight days.Danielle Jefferis, a University of Denver-based attorney, has been fighting for the rights of these detainees for months."We are hearing that detainees are getting extremely frustrated because they don’t know why these quarantines are being extended. And the consequences of the quarantines being extended are pretty great," she said.Those consequences include no family or attorney visitations, court and bond hearings cancelled, and ultimately a delay a justice.She has a message for GEO Group, the private contractor paid to operate the facility.“Improve medical care in the facility. These infectious disease outbreaks should not be happening and should not be lasting as long as they are," Jefferis said.And that's the foundation for the frustration. This wife of one detainee says the men are not being told what’s going on, just that their quarantine keeps getting extended. Now it’s led to a hunger strike. 1957

Are you ready for fall? Dunkin' hopes you are ready as it announced on Monday that its pumpkin spice flavors will be available on Aug. 21. According to Dunkin', its stores will feature several new products: A Cinnamon Spice Pumpkin Spice Latte and Apple Cider Donuts and Munchkins donut holes. This is in addition to its lineup of pumpkin flavored coffees, pumpkin donuts and pumpkin muffins. Dunkin's release of the fall favorites might predate Starbucks' release. Starbucks, which hasn't officially announced when its pumpkin spice lattes will be available, generally makes its fall lineup available in late August. Dunkin' also announced that eight of its 12,900 locations will be converted into "Pumpkin" locations on Aug. 14. Those eight Pumpkin locations will be serving free coffee to hundreds of customers, and have pumpkin flavored products available a week early. Apple just bought the bulk of Intel's smartphone-modem business in a deal valued at billion.The deal includes about 2,200 Intel employees who will now join Apple, as well as intellectual property, equipment and leases, the two companies said in a joint release put out Thursday.Apple will now hold over 17,000 wireless technology patents, according to the release. Intel will still be able to develop modems for non-smartphone applications, such as PCs and autonomous vehicles.The deal still must undergo regulatory approval, but both companies said it's expected to close in late 2019.The acquisition will give Apple more of a role in developing key parts of its smartphones at a time when iPhone sales are faltering as devices last longer and people have stopped replacing them as frequently. The smartphone-modem chips allow phones to connect to wireless data networks.In April, Intel said it would no longer make 5G modems for smartphones, citing "no clear path to profitability and positive returns" in the business. Going forward, it will continue to work on other products related to 5G.Separately, Intel reported second quarter results on Thursday that beat analyst projections for both revenue and earnings. California Governor Gavin Newsom did away Wednesday with a law that made it a crime to refuse to help a police officer.The law dates back nearly 150 years to California's Wild West days, when cowboys and outlaws roamed the state.The California Posse Comitatus Act of 1872 made it a misdemeanor for "an able-bodied person 18 years of age or older" to refuse a request for assistance from a police officer "in making an arrest, retaking into custody a person who has escaped from arrest or imprisonment, or preventing a breach of the peace or the commission of any criminal offense."It was widely used by authorities to legally form posses to hunt outlaws.State Senate Bill 192, which repeals the law, was first introduced on January 30, and it was sponsored by Senator Bob Hertzberg. Hertzberg originally tasked his interns with identifying outdated laws when they discovered it."Thank you to my interns for finding a law that belongs in the history books, not the law books," Senator Hertzberg said.Cory M. Salzillo, legislative director or the California State Sheriffs' Association, told CNN that the bill sends a message that discourages cooperation or giving assistance to law enforcement, and that it creates this notion that you shouldn't help law enforcement."We are unfamiliar with concerns with this statute other than it was enacted many years ago and carries a fine for a person who disobeys it," the CSSA said in a statement in June. "There are situations in which a peace officer might look to private persons for assistance in matters of emergency or risks to public safety and we are unconvinced that this statute should be repealed." 1661
