Former UN Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize winner Kofi Annan has died at age 80, his foundation confirmed Saturday.Annan, who was born in Ghana in 1938, served as the seventh UN Secretary-General, from 1997 to 2006, and was the first to rise from within the ranks of the United Nations staff.He had also been a member, since 2007, of The Elders, a humanitarian group of a dozen leaders and activists of worldwide stature formed by Nelson Mandela. In 2013, Annan became its chairman.The Kofi Annan Foundation confirmed his death with "immense sadness" in a statement posted on Twitter.Annan passed away peacefully Saturday morning after a short illness, with his wife Nane and their three children by his side during his final days, the statement said. 766

Forget the shirt and shoes; no service for people on horseback at Starbucks in Anthem, Arizona. A Valley girl is frustrated after trying to ride her horse through the drive-thru when the barista said nay. Aspen Cline had seen internet videos of others riding their horses through the Starbucks drive-thru and decided that's what she wanted to do for her birthday. Instead, she and her horse, Scout, were shut down by the barista who apparently wasn't into horsing around. "We weren't given a reason, just, "we can't take your order," said Aspen. "My friend and I were going to get frappuccinos for us and a cup of whipped cream for the horses." A Starbucks spokesperson told us, officially, their drive-through is for cars only. He said that policy is for animal, rider and employee safety. But, he also added that the horses caught the barista off guard and with a little-advanced notice next time they'll find a way to serve all creatures."We support Starbucks because they're very accepting," said Tandy Cline, Aspen's mom. Forestry officials in Virginia are warning people to stay socially distant from a venomous caterpillar that looks a little like a toupee.In a social media post, the Virginia Department of Forestry shared a photo of a puss caterpillar taken recently in the eastern part of the state. (AP) — California park officials have shut vehicle access to a pristine swimming hole in Northern California due to an influx of visitors to the “hidden gem” that has become a popular photo backdrop on social media. The move intended to discourage visitors to Yankee Jim's, a sliver of crystal clear water about 35 miles west of Lake Tahoe, comes as authorities struggle to control overcrowding at recreational sites as coronavirus cases continue to rise in many parts of the state. There are just 12 parking spots near Yankee Jim’s, but last weekend authorities counted more than 300 vehicles parked near the rugged roads surrounding a one-way bridge overhead.Placer County Sheriff’s officials said in a Facebook posting on Friday that the scenic area has exploded in popularity recently."This presents a huge public safety danger, and cannot allow any first responder to access Yankee Jim’s in the event of any emergency or fire," the statement said. 979
