PIRAEUS, Greece, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese naval escort warships arrived in Greece's Piraeus Port on Monday, kicking off a five-day visit. The vessels, destroyer Guangzhou and frigate Chaohu, are part of the fifth Chinese naval escort flotilla, which just completed the escort mission in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters to protect commercial ships from pirate attacks.Chinese Ambassador to Greece Luo Linquan and some 200 Chinese nationals came to the port to welcome the arrival of the two Chinese warships. Waving Chinese and Greek national flags, the enthusiastic Chinese living in Greece greeted the Chinese sailors with cheers. They were excited when allowed to tour one of the ships."We are so excited to have a chance to board a Chinese naval destroyer," Wu Hailong, a Chinese businessman in Athens, said, adding that he and his friends come to Piraeus early in the morning from central Athens to welcome the Chinese navy soldiers.Zhang Buren, a Chinese national from Taiwan who has lived in Athens for more than three decades, said he was very impressed by the elegant demeanor of Chinese navy soldiers. "I feel very much proud as a Chinese and so happy to see China is developing fast."At a welcoming ceremony held at the port, the Chinese ambassador said the Chinese navy has made its effort in fighting piracy. "The Chinese naval escort flotilla has successfully escorted some 20 Greek commercial vessels in the waters near Somalia in the past few years," he said. Greece is one of the countries with biggest commercial fleets. The Chinese envoy added that the Greek government and Greek Navy attach great importance to the visit by the Chinese naval fleet. "The Greek shipowners will come to visit the Chinese naval fleet and express their gratitude to the help from the Chinese navy," he said.During the five-day visit, the Chinese naval officers and soldiers will visit a Greek navy base as well as the Acropolis and other archeological sites in Athens.China's fifth naval escort flotilla with more than 800 officers and soldiers has successfully escorted 588 Chinese and foreign vessels in 41 batches since it arrived in the pirate-infested waters in early March this year.

NANJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- The population of China, the world's most populous country, is projected to reach 1.39 billion by the end of 2015, with those age 60 or over topping 200 million people, said Li Bin, head of the country's top population policy agency.Li, director of the National Population and Family Planning Commission, released these estimates Saturday during a speech at the annual conference of the China Population Association in Nanjing, capital city of east China's Jiangsu Province. The urban population is projected to be over 700 million over the next five years, for the first time exceeding the rural population, according to Li.She said the increase in the next five years would be based upon the nation's population momentum, which, according to her, would begin to decline after 2015.Population momentum is the tendency of a highly fertile population that has been rapidly increasing in size to continue to do so for decades after the onset of even a substantial decline in fertility.Chinese government statistics show China's population stood at 1.32 billion at the end of 2008, which was about 2.5 times the number in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded. To put a hold on the fast growth, the Chinese government adopted a one-child policy in the late 1970s. The policy had helped China's total population increase less than 40 percent between 1978 and 2008, whereas it nearly doubled between 1949 and 1978.However, during the next five years the development of China's population is expected to go through major transitional changes, Li said.China's first boom in its aging population is expected in the next five years, with roughly an average of eight million people turning 60 each year, 3.2 million more than occurred between 2006 and 2010, she said.In the coming five years, the ratio of the population aged 15 to 59 would peak and then slowly fall, whereas the population dependency ratio, a measure of the proportion of the population too young or too old to work, would rise for the first time after over 40 years of decreasing. In general, China would still retain the advantage of a plentiful labor supply and a relatively low population dependency ratio, she said.

BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The Long March and its legacy had contributed to shaping an extraordinary China, said former U.S. national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, when he called upon the headquarter of China's Central Military Commission (CMC) in Beijing on Monday. His meeting with senior Chinese military leader Xu Caihou started with the memory of the Long March which set Brzezinski in mind of his trip to retrace the Long March in 1981."I learned you had retraced China' s Long March with your family before and your wife is a well-known sculptor," said Xu, who showed Brzezinski around the meeting hall where a set of stone carvings were placed portraying the Chinese Red Army and their epic Long March from 1934 to 1936."Currently China's modern construction and its reform cause are another new Long March, and to stick to a peaceful development road is China's long-term and strategic choice," said Xu, CMC Vice Chairman.Brzezinski, who served under former U.S. President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981, had retraced part of the route of the Long March with his family when visiting China in July of 1981.After that China tour, he wrote an article for the Life Magazine titled "An American Family Retraces Mao's Long March", in which he said "For the emerging new China, the Long March is more than an epic of almost unmatched heroism. It is the reminder of the spirit of national unity essential to overcome the legacy of backwardness."Looking around each of the stone carving with great interest, Brzezinski said the "incredible" and "superb" works had reminded him of his China visits over the years, in particular, the trip to review the Long March. These experience helped me to better understand China and some of its historical events, said the 82-year-old strategist. The Long March was a famous military maneuver carried out by the Chinese Red Army led by the Communist Party of China (CPC) to combat the Kuomintang Regime.Though many soldiers died on the way of the two-year ordeal, the Red Army finally arrived at Yan'an in western Shaanxi Province after the 25,000-li (12,500-kilometer) trek, where the new headquarters of CPC was later established.Brzezinski said all these historical events had helped to shape an extraordinary China. In his two-hour-long meeting with Xu, Brzezinski stressed the United States and China should have all-round strategic dialogues and strengthen coordination and contact, and work for the peace and stability of the world.Xu agreed the two sides should properly handle bilateral relations and international issues to their mutual benefit instead of as a zero-sum game."More than 30 years of China-U.S. relations have proved the two countries can co-exist peacefully and enjoy common development. China's development will expand cooperation between the two countries," Xu added.Brzezinski is visiting China at the invitation of the Chinese International Institute for Strategic Society.
