SHANGHAI, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The number of visitors to the Shanghai World Expo 2010 topped 70 million Sunday, meeting organizers' expectations, according to an announcement on the official Expo website.Total visitor arrivals broke the 70 million mark as of 10:17 a.m. Sunday and by 1:30 p.m. some 572,900 visitors had entered the Expo Park on Sunday, the 177th day since the event started, bringing the total number of visitors to 70.28 million."The news is exciting and it's also encouraging for the organizers," said an official with the Bureau of the Shanghai World Expo Coordination.During the eight years since China successfully won the bid to host the 2010 Expo, Vicente Loscertales, Secretary-General of the International Exposition Bureau (BIE), has been asked again and again what's the value of the World Expo when people can get so much information about countries and trade from the Internet.The Shanghai Expo, the first such global event hosted by a developing country in the history of the World Expo, shows to the world that such an event is still relevant, as the huge number of visitors illustrate."You have achieved new records: a record number of participants, a record number of visitors, and you have built the largest site ever," said Loscertales on Oct. 1."I thought Canada was pretty amazing. BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese general Thursday met with the head of a leading U.S. think tank and discussed the building of strong military ties between the two countries, despite military exchanges between the two nations having been frozen since January."A sound and stable China-U.S. military relationship is good for bilateral strategic trust and regional peace and stability," Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Ma Xiaotian told John Hamre, president of the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).Hamre served as the U.S. deputy secretary of defense during the Clinton administration before joining CSIS in 2000.Hamre is in China at the invitation of a leading Chinese think tank, the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, for an academic symposium."China has always attached great importance to developing military ties with the United States and has made efforts in this regard," Ma told Hamre."Stronger military-to-military ties will be a very good thing for the two countries...We should have broader and deeper contact," Hamre said.On growing bilateral military ties, Ma proposed both sides respect each other's core interests and major concerns.Both sides should also properly handle differences and sensitive issues, Ma added.Hamre said China's prosperity contributes to the world, adding that the PLA's development is "logical."The former U.S. defense official said it is necessary for the two militaries to maintain candid communication to keep stable military relations.

HANOI, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday met separately with the prime ministers of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in Hanoi ahead of a series of summits between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its partners.At the meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Wen hailed Vietnam's preparation for the upcoming meetings, saying that China would join with Vietnam to ensure the success of the meetings at a time of profound changes going on in the international situation.Wen called for proper handling of the issue of South China Sea, saying it is of vital importance to the sound and stable development of China-Vietnam relations.He noted that China and Vietnam have established a negotiation mechanism to solve the issue, and he hoped the two countries would discuss and sign an agreement on basic principles guiding the solution to the issues of the sea as early as possible.Dung agreed with Wen's remarks.Expressing the high importance China placed on the summits, Wen said China would strengthen communication and coordination with Vietnam and work with all sides concerned to push forward East Asian cooperation.Wen said friendship and cooperation have remained the mainstream of China-Vietnam relations since the establishment of the bilateral diplomatic ties 60 years ago. GUANGZHOU, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's first inter-city subway, linking two southern China cities hosting the 2010 Asian Games, started operations Wednesday.The 21-kilometer Guangfo Line connects Guangzhou City with Foshan City, both in the manufacturing hub of the Pearl River Delta region in Guangdong Province.Riders on the subway will find that the travel time between the two cities has been reduced from 90 minutes to 30 minutes, said sources with the subway company Guangzhou Metro.The line has 14 stations and a ride from end to end costs only six yuan (less than one U.S. dollar).Local authorities have been pushing for the increased integration of cities in the Pearl River Delta and consider the operation of the Guangfo Line a big step in that direction.The subway was purposely opened one week prior to the start of the 2010 Asian Games. The competitions will be held in Guangzhou, Foshan, Dongguan, and Shanwei.

BEIJING, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- China has decided to postpone a negotiation with Japan on the East China Sea issue as part of its response to the seizure of a Chinese fishing boat, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu Friday night.The postponed talks, the second governmental negotiations on the principle common understandings on the East China Sea issue, had been scheduled for mid September, according to Jiang.A Japanese court on Friday, despite Chinese protests, ruled a 10-day detention through Sept.19 against the captain of a Chinese trawler which collided with Japanese patrol ships off the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea on Tuesday.The Chinese trawler under detention stops at the harbor of Ishigaki, Okinawa, Japan, Sept. 9, 2010. Japan Coast Guard sent the captain of the Chinese trawler which collided with Japanese patrol ships in waters off Diaoyu Islands to prosecutors in Okinawa Prefecture Thursday morning."The Japanese side has ignored China's repeated solemn representations and firm opposition, and obstinately decided to put the Chinese captain under the so-called judiciary procedures. China expresses strong discontent and grave protest," Jiang said."The Diaoyu islands and its adjacent islets have been Chinese territory since ancient times. Japan's acts have violated the law of nations and basic international common sense, and are ridiculous, illegal and invalid," Jiang said."Japan will reap as it has sown, if it continues to act recklessly," Jiang warned.Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Friday summoned Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa, saying China's determination to defend its sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands and the interests of the Chinese people was unswerving.Yang said China demanded Japan immediately and unconditionally release the boat and all the crew, including the captain.On Tuesday, two Japan Coast Guard patrol ships and the Chinese fishing boat collided in waters off the Diaoyu Islands.No injuries were reported, but the fishing boat was then intercepted by the Japanese patrol.
