BELGRADE, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Wednesday met with Serbian President Boris Tadic, vowing to add new impetus to the traditional friendship between China and Serbia."I am here to help realize the consensus between the two heads of states, pushing forward our strategic partnership and traditional friendship," said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), who arrived here on Wednesday afternoon for a three-day visit.Wu is the first NPC Standing Committee chairman to visit Serbia over the past decade. China and Serbia have kept long-time friendship, and shared mutual support and respect. BEIJING, July 29 (Xinhua) - As China's urban population reached 46 percent of the total population last year, Chinese urban dwellers became the largest such population in the world, according to a 'blue paper' released on Thursday.By the end of 2009, China's urban population reached 620 million as both the annual birth rate and the total urban population became the world' s largest, according to "City' s Blue Book: China's Urban Development Report No. 3," which has been released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Social Sciences Academic Press.It said China's urban population is twice that of the population of the United States and one quarter more than the total population of 27 countries of the European Union.By 2015, urban residents in China will make up about 52 percent, and by 2030, 65 percent of the total population in the country, it said."A milestone change for urban development will take place when urban people make up more than 50 percent of the population and thus surpass the number of rural people," the paper said."The 50-percent point phenomenon will occur in the mid-12th Development Program period (2011-2015) when both the number of urban and rural Chinese will reach 680 million," it said.The role of the urban economy will be further strengthened by that time, it said, adding that the urban economy would continue to drive the domestic demand.

BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- The All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) said Monday it would work to help 1 million job-seekers find jobs this year, as well as provide vocational training for an additional 1 million people.Also, the ACFTU will provide training and job opportunities for 200,000 housekeeping workers this year, said Li Shouzhen, spokesperson with the ACFTU, at a meeting of the national union's executive committee.The ACFTU has launched a five-year campaign of vocational training to help improve the skills of workers, Li said.The ACFTU has been working to protect migrant workers' rights and recovered 2.5 billion yuan (366.03 million U.S. dollars) of defaulted salaries for migrant workers in the first half of the year, Li said.The national union, founded on May 1, 1925, had a membership of 169.94 million, with migrant workers accounting for 24.1 percent of the total, in 2007.ACFTU chairman Wang Zhaoguo said at the meeting that trade unions at various levels should work to protect employee rights to ensure stability.The meeting stressed the importance of the collective wage negotiation system and seeks to implement its use in wage discussions between businesses with trade unions by 2012.

ULAN BATOR, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- A group of children from China's earthquake-stricken Qinghai province arrived in Mongolia on Tuesday for an eight-day visit.A ceremony was held at the Nairamdal international children's center, 27 km from the capital city of Ulan Bator, to welcome the 59 children and youngsters from Qinghai in western China, which was hit by a major earthquake in April.Prime Minister Batbold Sukhbaatar invited the children from the quake-hit region for a visit in early June when Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Mongolia.Last year, 60 children from China's southwestern Sichuan province, which was also hit by a deadly earthquake in 2008, visited Mongolia at the invitation of then Prime Minister Bayar Sanjaa.
