A Phoenix father is accused of using frozen hot dogs to reduce swelling to the legs and backside of his 2-year-old son after he'd abused him.Phoenix police report that on Tuesday they arrested 23-year-old Joshua Junior Rodriguez for child abuse that he allegedly inflicted upon his 2-year-old son on Oct. 11.Police say that after an argument, the boy's mother was packing a bag to leave when she heard "whipping sounds" coming from the garage. When she looked in, she reportedly saw Rodriguez striking their son on the bottom with a strap from a duffel bag.She grabbed the boy away from him and went into the house. However, Rodriguez pushed her away and grabbed the boy again, taking him to the bedroom, removing his diaper and continuing to strike him on the butt.Police say Rodriguez then threw him on the bed and spanked him 23 times, before taking him into the showers where he struck him again when the boy tried to get out.After seeing the injuries he inflicted, Rodriguez allegedly placed a package of frozen hot dogs on his butt to reduce the swelling.He reportedly told the child’s mother, "You're going to get me for child abuse, huh?" He would not allow her to leave home until she agreed not to call the police.During his emotional initial Court appearance, Rodriguez claimed, "these are all false allegations."Police say the boy suffered "extensive bruising" and scratches. 1410

A new political ad could be masquerading as an official correction to the sample ballots that hit mailboxes across San Diego.It's the latest swing in the fight over the state's recent 12-cent per gallon gas tax hike.The mailer, sent to two million Californians mail-in voters, is titled "Election Ballot **Correction**" and says the correct title for Proposition 6 should be "Gas Tax Repeal Initiative.”Proposition 6 is on the November ballot to repeal the state's gas tax increase and new vehicle registration fees. The state raised the levies last year to generate billions of dollars in infrastructure projects. Dave McCulloch, communications director for Reform California, which sent out the mailer, says the Attorney General's ballot language does not make that clear. It instead reads that Prop 6 "eliminates certain road repair and transportation funding...repeals a 2017 transportation law's taxes and fees designated for road repairs and public transportation."We sent out this mailer to make sure that everyone in California knows Prop 6 is the gas tax repeal," McCulloch said. "We know that when people discover that Yes on 6 means to repeal the gas tax, they're much more in favor of it because they realize what it is.”The Attorney General's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The mailer instructs voters to keep it with their sample ballot mailed to them. Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego, said ballot language is often contentions. But he noted the gas tax increase has been so heavily covered that most people will associate with Prop 6. He says this mailer reinforces that. "When they get to their ballot on election day, they're not going to see repeal the gas tax," Kousser said. "They're going to see a proposal written legal language that says exactly what this bill does, which is it changes transportation fees and cuts funding for things." That mailer does include disclosures that it's not official and that Reform California paid for it. Still, Catherine hill, a local spokeswoman for the No on 6 campaign, called it deceptive."It's made to look like a registrar of voters piece, so it's made to look official, so it's misleading," she said. The San Diego Association of Governments says more than 200 million dollars in funds from the tax increase have already been awarded to the region. 2399

A police department in Arkansas has apologized for sharing a misleading warning about the danger of opioids on its Facebook page."The post about the fentanyl was sent so me from another officer at another Department," the Leachville Police Department wrote on Facebook Thursday. "I simply shared it. I’m should have checked into it further before I posted it. Sorry for the confusion."The Leachville Police Department warned residents to wipe down shopping carts before using them to protect against the dangers of fentanyl, a powerful opioid. "Fentanyl or something like that still on their hands and they touch that cart handle and then you do, it can get into your system," the department originally posted on Facebook. "Scary but worth taking the time to clean the handle. All you'd have to do is rub your nose or touch your child's mouth. I never even considered this possibility. Children being exposed to just the powder or residue is a bad situation that can turn deadly."While a police officer in Ohio recently claimed ot have overdosed on fentanyl by simply touching the substance, some experts dispute the officer's claim.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, opioids killed more than 33,000 people in 2015. A victim of clerical sexual abuse has said that Pope Francis told him that God made him gay and that his sexuality "does not matter."Juan Carlos Cruz, a survivor of sexual abuse, spent three days with Pope Francis at the Vatican in April, in which he discussed his sexuality and the abuse he suffered at the hands of a Chilean priest.Describing his encounter with the Pope to CNN, Cruz said: "You know Juan Carlos, that does not matter. God made you like this. God loves you like this. The Pope loves you like this and you should love yourself and not worry about what people say."The Pope's words amount to a significant departure from the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church, which considers homosexuality "objectively disordered" and contrary to God's law. 769

A security camera captured video of an officer in Asyut, Egypt catching a 5-year-old boy who jumped off a third-story balcony on Saturday. The video was released by Egypt's Ministry of Interior. In the video, three officers are seen looking up, as one officer grabs some fabric. A few seconds later, the boy, identified by CBS News as Ammar Motaz Abd El-Salam, lands into the arms of Kameel Fathy Geed, 45. The force of the boy falling was enough to knock over the officer. Officer, with the boy in his arms, falls to the ground, but his fall was softened by the fabric. The Ministry of Interior said that no one suffered any major injuries. In an interview with Egyptian TV network Dream TV, the boy's mother said El-Salem reportedly climbed onto a small table during a party. The boy then toppled, forcing the officers to spring into action. The mother added that no one at the party noticed. 942
