LOS ANGELES, May 2 (Xinhua) -- An asteroid will fly past Earth this fall at a close approach that will allow a close-up view of one of Earth's good-sized space rocks, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) announced on Monday."On November 8, asteroid 2005 YU55 will fly past Earth and at its closest approach point will be about 325,000 kilometers away," said Don Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office at the JPL in Pasadena, Los Angeles."This asteroid is about 400 meters wide -- the largest space rock we have identified that will come this close until 2028."Despite the relative proximity and size, "YU55 poses no threat of an Earth collision over, at the very least, the next 100 years, " Yeomans said in a press release."During its closest approach, its gravitational effect on the Earth will be so miniscule as to be immeasurable. It will not affect the tides or anything else.""While near-Earth objects of this size have flown within a lunar distance in the past, we did not have the foreknowledge and technology to take advantage of the opportunity," said Barbara Wilson, a scientist at JPL. "When it flies past, it should be a great opportunity for science instruments on the ground to get a good look.""The best resolution of the radar images was 7.5 meters per pixel," said JPL radar astronomer Lance Benner. "When 2005 YU55 returns this fall, we intend to image it at 4-meter resolution with our recently upgraded equipment at the Deep Space Network at Goldstone, California. Plus, the asteroid will be seven times closer. We're expecting some very detailed radar images."Asteroid 2005 YU55 was discovered in December 2005 by Robert McMillan, head of the NASA-funded Spacewatch Program at the University of Arizona, Tucson. The space rock has been in astronomers' crosshairs before.In April 2010, Mike Nolan and colleagues at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico generated some ghostly images of 2005 YU55 when the asteroid was about 2.3 million kilometers from Earth.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Google's Android will become the most popular smartphone operating system worldwide and will account for 49 percent of the market by 2012, IT research and advisory firm Gartner said Thursday.According to Gartner's projections, worldwide smartphone sales will reach 468 million units in 2011, a 57.7 percent increase from 2010.The company predicts that Apple's iOS will remain the second biggest platform worldwide through 2014 although its share will decrease slightly after 2011, on the assumption that "Apple will be interested in maintaining margins rather than pursuing market share by changing its pricing strategy."Microsoft's Windows, driven by its partnership with Nokia, is expected to move into the mid-tier by the end of 2012 and become the third largest in the worldwide ranking by 2013.Some analysts raised doubts on Gartner's forecasts, saying that its assumption on Apple's price strategy contradicts statements by Apple's chief operating officer Tim Cook and the cooperation between Nokia and Microsoft will not have that much of an impact on smartphone market share by 2012.

GUIYANG, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has called for providing more support to the country's less developed regions, saying priority should be placed on improving the people's livelihood.He made the remarks during an inspection tour to Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture and Guiyang City in southwest China's Guizhou Province from Feb. 11 to 13, according to an official statement Xinhua received Sunday.Li said more attention should be directed to improve people's living standards as China is making efforts to achieve its strategic goals of development.During his tour, Li visited some residents' homes at a poor village in Libo County of Qiannan.He called for greater efforts to improve people's livelihood, a step which would help boost domestic demand and facilitate the transformation of the nation's economic growth mode.Li urged local authorities to work well on the safety of drinking water, road construction in rural areas, and the remodeling of old houses. In particular, schools should be made accessible for children from poor homes.Further, he demanded greater efforts from local governments to improve the health care system that covers the three levels of county, township and village, and relieving the financial burden of the masses in health care services.In Guiyang, Li inspected a local company in constructing affordable housing for low-income earners and visited poor homes in Yunyan district. SAN FRANCISCO, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft on Monday sued Barnes & Noble, claiming patent infringement by the largest book retailer in the United States.Microsoft said it filed legal actions on Monday in both the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S. District Court of the Western District of Washington against Barnes & Noble, as well as Foxconn and Inventec, two manufacturers of Barnes & Noble's devices.According to Microsoft, the actions focus on the patent infringement by Barnes & Noble's Nook e-reader and tablet, both of which run Google's Android operating system.The patents at issue cover a range of functionality embodied in Android devices that are essential to the user experience, including natural ways of interacting with devices by tabbing through various screens to find the information they need, surfing the Web more quickly and interacting with documents and e-books, Microsoft said in a press release."The Android platform infringes a number of Microsoft's patents, and companies manufacturing and shipping Android devices must respect our intellectual property rights," Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft's corporate vice president and deputy general counsel, was quoted by the press release as saying.Writing in a separate company blog post, Gutierrez said that the latest actions bring to 25 the total number of Microsoft patents in litigation for infringement by Android smartphones, tablets and other devices.He noted that Microsoft has established a licensing program to address Android's ongoing infringement, and leading Android smartphone manufacturer HTC has taken a license under this program.Amazon.com also signed a patent license with Microsoft last year covering its Kindle e-reader, he added."Unfortunately, after more than a year of discussions, Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec have so far been unwilling to sign a license, and therefore, we have no other choice but to bring legal action to defend our innovations," Gutierrez said in the blog post.
