(KGTV) — A police pursuit that started in the South Bay ended in North County Tuesday, with the occupants in a standoff with police.The chase began just after 1 p.m. in National City in the 2300 block of E. 8th St. with a report of a suicidal woman in a vehicle, according to National City Police. Officers arrived to find the car leaving the area with a passenger in the back seat of a Nissan sedan.Officers tried to pull the female driver over, but she refused to stop. She continued onto northbound Interstate 805 and then northbound I-15 in the carpool lanes, police said.Sky10 was live over the standoff this afternoon:CHP officers deployed a spike strip in Rancho Bernardo, which the driver hit while traveling about 70 miles per hour. After losing one tire, she slowed to about 10 mph and continued into Escondido, eventually stopping in a parking lot in the 700 block of E. Valley Parkway.Officers surrounded her vehicle but she refused communicate with police. Officers at the scene said she was seen taking pills in the vehicle and stabbing herself.The passenger exited the car shortly after 2 p.m. Soon after, the driver exited carrying a dog. The driver then handed the dog over to police and was taken into custody, ending the 10-minute standoff.She was transported to a nearby hospital. Police have not said what charges, if any, she faces. (KGTV) — The man charged with killing a 55-year-old woman as she left bible study last year has been sentenced.Dionicio Torrez Jr., 25, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the March 7, 2017, shooting of Catherine Kennedy in Escondido. The judge also gave Torrez Jr. an extra 35 years to life in prison for attempted murder of rival gang members. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - A series of unfortunate events may have led to an albino red-tailed boa constrictor named "Lemony Snicket" disappearing from a North County museum. Officials with the EcoVivarium children's museum in Escondido believe Lemony disappeared on April 29 during a tour of the museum's Arthropod Jungle. During the tour, staff took Lemony out of its cage to show guests, before returning it to its enclosure and locking the gate.Unfortunately, a security camera facing Lemony's enclosure was damaged that same day and did not capture what could have happened.Staff said they fear the snake may have been stolen. They told 10News a man in his 20s left the tour group and never returned shortly before the snake disappeared."We are all heartbroken, and just want him safely returned, no questions asked," the museum said of Facebook. The snake was rescued four-and-a-half years ago in San Diego from an owner who had neglected it.Lemony is about 7-feet long, and yellow and orange, and has a scar on its face.Anyone with any information as to the snake's whereabouts is asked to call EcoVivarium at 760-975-9690.The situation is similar to another missing reptile case recently in North San Diego County."Bubbles" the monitor lizard slinked away from Mike's Pets in Spring Valley in March. Mike Estevez, of the store, said getting the word out was key in Bubbles' return."It really helped a lot," Estevez said. "We got a lot of feedback and concern from people coming in."A radio listener who heard about Bubbles ended up safely locating the missing lizard several days later. 1667

Fast food sandwich chain Subway expects to close about 500 stores in North America this year.But it's also hoping to open as many as 1,000 stores overseas.The company has 44,000 locations globally -- more than any other retailer. The National Retail Federation put its US store count at nearly 27,000 as of 2016, compared to 17,500 for Yum Brands, which runs Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and KFC, and the 14,000 locations for McDonald's.The company said Wednesday it expects stores to close after it rolls out a revitalization plan, announced last summer, that will require franchise owners to invest more in their operations. All Subway stores are franchise owned, rather than owned by the company. The plans to revamp locations include adding self-service kiosks, more comfortable seating and Wi-Fi and USB charging ports. In February, Subway also announced plans for a loyalty program to win back customers and stem slumping sales.Store closings are new for Subway. It had a net loss of more than 350 US stores in 2016, the first year in the company's history that it trimmed rather than increased its number of stores. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A North County family is raising money for an Escondido Police officer with a brain tumor. According to the family, Brett Byler was found to have a large brain tumor on February 16. The family said in a GoFundMe that Byler had surgery Thursday to remove 80 percent of the tumor. Byler is scheduled to undergo chemotherapy for the remainder of the tumor. The family says Byler is a former Marine and has been a police officer since 2009 with the Department of Defense and San Diego Police. Click here for the GoFundMe. 554
